Ubisoft unveiled the next installment in their beloved cult classic Rainbow Six franchise at E3 last year to a rousing reception. One thing that instantly stood out was, in a market flooded with shooters featuring similar gameplay that stresses immediate gratification over anything else, Rainbow Six: Siege seemed to be sticking true to the spirit of the original games by throwing in so many more variables and factors for players to consider- essentially, it was emulating a more ‘authentic’ and accurate shooting experience.

In the latest developer diary that Ubisoft released for the game, we learned the ridiculous degrees to which they are going to achieve this- in this developer diary, they spoke with Adam Crawley, the coder for the weapon recoil in Rainbow Six Siege to tell us about where the bullets originate from and how progressive the recoil is as we fire.

It’s an enlightening conversation, especially as get into the minutiae of how each weapon handles, and how that is reflected in coding down to the granular level. Rainbow Six: Siege is anticipated to release some time this year for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Stay tuned.

In 1996, Tom Clancy co-founded the development company, Red Storm Entertainment, which was subsequently purchased by Ubisoft. Through Red Storm, well over thirty games solely inspired by Clancy’s concepts have been developed and sold to much acclaim. Among them are the 18 installments in the Rainbow Six series, The 13 installments in the Ghost Recon series, and the seven installments in the Splinter Cell series.

While it is unclear how heavy a hand Clancy played in the development of games once Red Storm was purchased by Ubisoft, one thing is certain: Without Tom, we wouldn’t have any of these epic stories. His death will surely be felt through the the gaming industry, as well as the literary and film worlds.
