Back in the early days of gaming, the game over screens were either too motivating, funny or depressing. And what’s more, some of these game over screens mock you and call you a failure just point blank.

Whether we hate them or not, some of these game over screens are just too awesome to ignore or forget. And let’s be honest it was these game over screens that often prompted us to get over ourselves and finish the game, come what may. With that said, here are some of the top game over screens of all time.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty has a very direct and simple, yet very sad game over screen. Granted that it doesn’t explain in detail how you failed, but it becomes very apparent that your commanding officer will miss you terrible. After the expected wail of “SNNAAKE!!!” you’re treated to a very straightforward, game over screen. Like I said, very simple, but sad, but also a classic.
