Lead designer/director of development Wojciech Pazdur also talks about Kinect support.

The Xbox One’s eSRAM has been a source of contention for developers since even before the console had launched. While some claim it limits the console’s output resolution in comparison to the PS4, thus ensuring something less than 1080p, others claim it isn’t a bottleneck at all and that it will be some time before studios can fully utilize the same. The Farm 51’s Get Even is a rather interesting case, especially since it’s still early in development but is already looking quite good.

Lead designer/director of development Wojciech Pazdur offered his short take on development for the Xbox One. Given the mixed response to the console’s eSRAM, how is Get Even taking advantage of the same?

Pazdur responded that, “We hope it will help with streaming, but I won’t sign under this before I’ll see it in action on some huge level with final content in place.” Considering the game is out in 2015, it seems the studio still has a ways to go.

But one thing that is confirmed is that Get Even will be utilizing additional features like the PS4’s Touchpad and Xbox One’s Kinect. “We have some cool gadgets to play with in both story campaigns, and Kinect looks perfect as an optional interface for controlling some non combat related gameplay elements. But we don’t want to make these control schemes too invasive, generally player interface in Get Even is aimed to be as transparent as it can be.”

What are your thoughts on the game? Let us know in the comments.

Level designer Steven Gallagher also talks about the length of the campaign.

Eidos Montreal’s Thief, in case you didn’t know, will be releasing for current and next gen consoles. Speaking to GamingBolt, level designer Steven Gallagher explained some of unique mechanics we’ll be seeing on the Xbox One and PS4, especially with regards to the DualShock 4’s touchpad.

“The PS4 touchpad is used to quickly select items from your inventory and switch arrowheads – it’s really intuitive and people that have played it really like it. We also have the light on the front of the pad changing color to indicate when you step out into the light – it flashes white when you step into the light and goes dark blue when you’re in shadow. It’s subtle but when you’re playing in a darkened room it’s really cool and helps you know when you’re in danger.”

As for how long the single-player campaign will be, Gallagher emphasized that the length is highly dependent on your play style. “With regards to the single player campaign, there is no correct answer to this because your play style defines how quickly you will go through the game!

“I‘ve seen more aggressive players, even aggressive stealth players, who can go through the game quite quickly because it is part of their play style, i.e. how quickly can I get through this room without being spotted?, how quickly can I take everyone out? etc. And then there is the other type of players who want to hear/see everything, they are going to keep stopping and hear conversations, look through keyholes, open windows and explore the levels fully.

“These players are going to be playing for a long time because there is stuff hidden all over the place. This is such a broad answer as there is no answer, it is very much down to you play style. The player also has access to a huge city hub area where there are additional, non-critical jobs and side quests.”

Thief will be out in February 2014. What are your thoughts on its next gen features and length? Let us know below.

Techland studio members also talk about next-gen specific features for the horror title.

It may seem like a long time ago since we heard anything about the controversies surrounding certain games’ resolutions. This was highlighted by some titles like Call of Duty: Ghosts running on 1080p for PS4 and 720p on Xbox One. Now that both consoles are launched and the next wave of cross-generational titles is due next year, GamingBolt had a chance to speak to Techland, the studio behind the upcoming first person horror title Dying Light, about next-gen development.

We spoke to tech director Jakub Klarowicz about whether both the Xbox One and PS4 versions would run at 1080p and 60 FPS. He stated that, “It’s too early to tell. We aim to have the final game running at 1080p, 60 fps on both PS4 and Xbox One, and it seems that we will be able to achieve this. Obviously, we’re still working on the game itself and its optimization, but we aim to provide that kind of experience when the game launches.”

Producer Tymon Smektala also spoke about the differences between current and next gen versions of the game, including PS4 and Xbox One specific features such as Kinect and touchpad support. “In terms of the core gameplay, there will be no significant differences. Very early in the production process we’ve decided that we want the game to play exactly the same on all platforms, so we’ve created a new version of our in-house Chrome Engine technology to support that goal.

“That’s why all Dying Light elements that relate to the core gameplay – be it the enemy AI or the number of zombies on screen – stay the same, whether it’s current-gen or next-gen. On the other hand, we also wanted to use the extreme processing power of PS4, Xbox One and PC, so these versions use all advancements in the field of graphical fidelity, including our very advanced physically based lighting model.

“For regular gamers it might sound like a technical mumbo-jumbo, but it’s something they should really be excited about: thanks to the new lighting model, the whole game world looks extra realistic and instantly gets +10 to immersion. Of course, we’re also using some of the more specific next-gen features, like lightbar and touchpad support or voice recognition, the latter being tied to our in-game noise system (you can draw zombies’ attention just by screaming at them).”

Dying Light is currently slated to release in 2014.

Had enough of Angry Birds for both current gen consoles and mobiles? Well too bad, because Activision Publishing has announced the release of Rovio Entertaniment’s Angry Birds Star Wars for the PlayStation 4. The game is essentially a Lucasfilm coated homage to the Star Wars series, and includes themes, levels, characters and an art style that borrows heavily from the sci-fi franchise.
Along with 200 levels from the mobile version, you’ll have 20 console-only bonus stages to go with the new competitive and co-op multiplayer modes. The game will also take advantage of the PS4’s touchpad and PS Move’s motion controls to allow you to line up that perfect shot. So if you’ve been waiting for a reason to shamelessly dust off Move, here it is.

Currently available for Xbox 360, PS3, PS Vita, Wii, Wii U and 3DS, Angry Birds Star Wars is also now available on the Xbox One. Stay tuned for more details and let us know what you think of yet another Angry Birds port for consoles.

Unlike NBA 2K14, EA Tiburon’s NBA Live 14 is looking to jump straight onto next generation platforms. However, according to Gary Patterson, senior creative director, there won’t be any difference between the two in terms of gameplay.

As Patterson stated, “All the game features will be the same for PS4 and Xbox One. It’s up to the gamer to decide which platform they’ll play NBA LIVE 14 on.”

There will be some implementation on additional features such as the PS4’s DualShock 4 touchpad and the Xbox One’s Cloud support. “We will support some basic functionality on the PS4 touchpad around team management. More details will be provided later. Regarding Xbox One’s cloud services, we do not currently support them. However, we will support the platform standard cloud syncing of your data.”

We also asked about the new BounceTek that NBA Live 14 implements, and how this would affect gameplay. “Basketball video gamers spend around 50% of a game dribbling a ball, yetthe mechanic of the dribble has basically gone unchanged since Gen1. This is more than a decade of old tech showing up in today’s games. The limitations of this tech are evident in visual and gameplay artifacts such as ball warping, half-dribbles and feet sliding; all of which contribute to unrealistic movement.

“Sports games are all about player movement and momentum, controlling it and exploiting it is how we balance the game, create depth but also create the amazing moments that make NBA basketball the spectacle that it is. With bounceTek, we are releasing the ball to physics for the first time ever in a basketball video game and in doing so creating the most authentic looking basketball dribble, with close to 1000 new animations, but more than that we are creating a system that mimics the nuanced movement, and thus depth, of real basketball, a system that we call ‘authentically responsive’.”

NBA Live 14 releases on November 19th in Europe and North America for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
