Why? Why is this a thing?

The new Sonic Boom Trailer has been revealed and its made of nothing but nightmares and horror. This is, for me at least, the final nail in the lid of that oddly shaped hedgehog coffin.

So what are we seeing? This is the tie-in television series for the new spin-off Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, creatively named Sonic Boom. See what they did there? Don’t get me wrong, this is a kids show and this only really exists to sell toys and promote the games.

As a result, you have a random collection of jokes, more than a few which miss their mark. What counts as humour in this? Speaking fast and having the characters close their eyes half way and make some vaguely satirical remark.

Regardless, it will be out on November 8th. What do you think of the above trailer? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Nancy Tellem finds Microsoft's original content development more focused than Sony's.

With plenty of exciting announcements for their Xbox One-targeted TV shows and 18 months of preparation before the console’s initial reveal, Xbox Entertainment Studios head Nancy Tellem feels that Microsoft is significantly more committed to the cause than Sony.

“Microsoft’s dedicated a whole studio to support this kind of content development. Original content is something that everyone’s toying with right now. It’s very unclear how committed they are to that on PlayStation.”

Tellem also spoke about having the kind of access that working with Microsoft usually brings. “Whether it’s from a game like Fable, or Age of Empires, or Gears of War, or Forza or Halo. These are things that, frankly if we weren’t attached to Microsoft, everyone would yearn to have. It’s an amazing platform to work from.”

As of now, Sony has announced Powers for PlayStation while Microsoft has revealed Halo: The Television Series and, more recently, Humans for the Xbox One. How these efforts will pan out remains to be seen but considering the creative talent Microsoft is employing, the Xbox One could have the advantage. Stay tuned.

The parallel universe drama will be out in 2015 and focus on artificial humans.

Channel 4, which has held many acclaimed UK TV series including Black Mirror and Utopia, has recently announced that it is partnering with Xbox Entertainment to produce a TV show called Humans which will be broadcast on the Xbox One and the channel’s own network. It will consist of 8 episodes, 60 minutes each, based off the original Swedish drama Real Humans and take place in the future where robot servants called Synths assist humanity.

It that weren’t enough, it’s produced by the same company Kudos which was directly responsible for series such as The Hour, Utopia, Broadchurch and The Tunnel.

Channel 4 Head of Drama Piers Wenger stated that, “In Humans, Sam and Jon have not only crafted an ingenious and imaginative thriller, but they’re also asking big, thought-provoking questions about how we live. I’m thrilled to be working once again with the team at Kudos and to be partnering with Xbox to bring this extraordinary and epic series to the screen. This is the first co-production commission to benefit from Channel 4’s increased investment in drama and reaffirms our commitment to ambitious, highly original drama series.”

President of Xbox Entertainment Studios Nancy Tellem stated that, “Humans not only questions personal relationships, but we loved how this sci-fi show toys with reality and our connection to technology.” She adds “This deal with Channel 4 and Kudos underscores Xbox Entertainment Studios’ commitment to programming premium TV series with global partners and creating engaging interactive experiences – and sits alongside other original commissions including a Halo TV series executive produced by Steven Spielberg.”

Humans will begin filming this summer and broadcast in 2015. Stay tuned for more details and updates.

Microsoft president of entertainment and digital media Nancy Tellem has stated in a recent interview that the first piece of original Xbox programming will be coming in early 2014 for the Xbox One.

Speaking to Variety, she stated that Microsoft hopes to “put something up in the first quarter, at minimum second quarter. We aren’t Netflix, we aren’t Amazon. We’re a different animal. We’re neither or we’re a little like them. It all depends.

“The lack of black and white and this is the template and this is what we’re following is very difficult. As we continue to do deals everyone’s going to get more comfortable. I’m incredibly ambitious and impatient [but] we’re here to support the artists and the talent. We don’t have the layers traditional media has. Our studio is very lean which allows us to be a lot more nimble and have a direct relationship with talent and help them realize their vision.”

Earlier revealed shows included Halo: The Television Series. What has Microsoft been up to since? We’ll find out next year.

Pilot for the TV show has already been shot.

Speaking to GamesIndustry International, Remedy Entertainment CEO Matias Myllyrinne revealed the current progress of Quantum Break’s TV show, and how the venture couldn’t have been possible without Microsoft – who nonetheless have a vested interest in it. Hence its exclusivity.

“We’ve shot the pilot and we’ve tested out various partners. We’re working with different people so we know where we’re going with it…but I can’t get into too many details on the talent behind it. It’s something we’ll be shooting on the West Coast of L.A.

“This is clearly a strategic move for them as well as us. This is something – we have crazy ideas – but we need to fall back and let the full force of a company like Microsoft see it through. There’s no way on Earth that we would take on a venture like this on our own. We might have the appetite but there’s no way we could.

“For us, our interests are nicely aligned. We serve a strategic purpose for them in delivering unique content for their platform with a unique twist. And for us that allows us follow the creative passion that the team needs to fulfill through a project like this.”

Quantum Break was announced for the Xbox One in May, though a release date for the game is still TBA.

CEO Matias Myllyrinne talks about the influence of other mediums in all of Remedy's work.

Remedy Entertainment’s Quantum Break has garnered its fair share of skepticism. The Xbox One exclusive from the developer of Max Payne and Alan Wake will be accompanied by a TV show with intertwining elements to the game, and given how despised the word “TV” has become thanks to Microsoft, one wonders what drove Remedy to even attempt the same in the first place.

Speaking to GamesIndustry International, CEO Matias Myllyrinne addressed the same. “In terms of where we’ve seen a lot raised eyebrows is where the TV elements are tied in. For us, our games are a melting pot of popular culture. Look at Max Payne, it has graphic novels, in Alan Wake we had pages of a novel, we had live TV shows and radio. For us, this is taking it to its logical conclusion.

“So the game and TV show ship together as one cohesive package. The TV show is episodic. So the episodes of the TV show are interwoven with the episodes of the game. The storylines take place in the same location. Hypothetically you can watch one or play the other but you’ll get so much more out of it if you combine them together.

“For us it seems like a logical thing to do now. If we fell short of anything on Alan Wake I think it was the facial acting and performance. That’s something we really wanted to address. We’ve spent a lot of time researching methods and we now have visual doubles where all the nuances of the actors are captured. We have our new technology, called North Light, that we built. It’s funny because it raises up a new set of issues and challenges.”

It seems Ubisoft and Microsoft switched places for E3 2013, as the former sees fit to announced Rabbids Invasion, an interactive TV show/game which lets player influence events happening in each episode with the power of Kinect. Meanwhile, the latter…well, it certainly proved us wrong, that’s for sure.

This entails key points that show up in different episodes in which different actions can be performed for different performances. And how does Ubisoft have you interacting with your TV? Oh, by screaming at it or pointing your finger at different objects to shoot eggs in order to torture farm animals.

Honestly, it’s all quite disturbing overall. Did we mention that it doesn’t look like much fun? At all? Check out the trailer above if you don’t believe us – which should also be punishment enough for not believing us.

To release alongside TV show of the same name.

Creative director of Remedy Entertainment Sam Lake took the stage at Microsoft’s E3 press conference to showcase the studio’s upcoming exclusive Quantum Break.

The game will involve temporal malfunctions or something to that effect, which sees time slow down and freeze altogether. The trailer at E3 2013 showed the protagonist Jack trying to rescue an informant of his in 60 seconds before being killed by a frozen explosion.

Just roll with it for now.

Jack can apparently talk to people during these “frozen” moments as long as he’s touching them. And yes, he does manage to save his informant in time.

Oddly enough the game will be run alongside a TV show of the same, which will help inform players of their motivation and provide a more personalized version of the story. Cue obligatory cries of the Xbox One doing nothing but TV. But seriously, at this point, it’s been going far better than we expected. Stay tuned for more.
