In a recent statement, the publisher confirmed that accounts which purchased games will never be considered for deletion.

Following a recent tweet about Ubisoft closing accounts due to inactivity (see below), causing many to be concerned for their game libraries, the publisher has clarified its account deletion policy. It told IGN that it doesn’t delete accounts that have purchased games, though it deletes inactive ones per the EU’s General Data Protection Regular (GDPR).

Along with regulating how long companies can store a person’s information, the policy protects against fraud. When looking at an account’s deletion, several criteria are considered, including activity since creation, game libraries (reaffirming that any purchased titles meant it’s not eligible), an active subscription and duration of inactivity.

It also recently instilled a rule where accounts inactive for less than four years were not subject to deletion. If a user does get an email about their account’s impending deletion, they can log back in and use a link to reactivate it. So no, you won’t lose all your Ubisoft games if inactive. Head here for more details on Ubisoft’s policy.

Neither of Massive Entertainment's upcoming open world titles will be available on Epic Games Store or Steam, it seems.

How Ubisoft handles its PC releases has been a source of annoyance for the PC audience for some time now, with the company having ditched Steam releases a while back and instead choosing to make its titles available only via the Epic Games Store and its own launcher, Ubisoft Connect. However, it seems that two major upcoming Ubisoft releases will be going even further with those restrictions.

Massive Entertainment’s upcoming megaton Star Wars Outlaws will seemingly be exclusive to Ubisoft Connect on PC when it launches next year. As spotted by ResetEra user spad3, Epic Games Store and (unsurprisingly) Steam aren’t mentioned as target platforms for the game on its official page on Ubisoft’s website.

Interesting, the same is also true for fellow upcoming Massive Entertainment-developed open world action-adventure title Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, which also only mentions Ubisoft Connect for PC on its page.

Whether not releasing PC titles for Epic Games Store either is a new policy that Ubisoft has adopted going forward remains to be seen, though curiously enough, Assassin’s Creed Mirage’s page does specifically mention Epic Games Store, as does the page for The Crew Motorfest.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is set to launch on December 7 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Star Wars Outlaws will launch for the same platforms sometime in 2024.

Take-Two Interactive President “Highly Skeptical” Subscriptions Will Be Primary Way Of Game Distribution

Karl Slatoff isn't sold on Game Pass as the potential future of the industry just yet.

Much like other industries, subscription services are quickly becoming a key part of the gaming industry. While Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass was by no means the first, it’s the one that has been pushed the most by the platform holder and one that has highlighted the potential future hold it and other services like it will have in the future. However, not everyone is sold just yet on that future.

In an earnings call, Take-Two Interactive President Karl Slatoff spoke about the idea of subscription services. While he thinks they definitely have a place in the industry as a whole, he isn’t so sure that it will be the primary way of distribution for gaming. He points to the way in which consumers actually buy titles, the low entry point of video games, and says subscriptions are going to be more about delivering older catalog titles (thanks to VG24/7 for transcribing the call).

“We’re highly skeptical that subscriptions will be the only way or the primary way that interactive entertainment is distributed,” said Slatoff. “And that’s because of the way people consume it. And the price point for owning a title, which is very reasonable and very, very low, actually, on a per hour basis.

“So I think it’s unlikely that subscription sort of plants from my video game, failed as the primary business model. Subscriptions can play a role in delivering catalog. We’ve supported numerous subscriptions, subscription offerings with catalog titles, I imagine we’ll continue to do so. And in any case, at the end of the day, the consumer will decide and we will be where the consumer is.”

Take-Two Interactive’s CEO has also said similar things about cloud gaming, so it seems like they and Microsoft are on too different tracks about where the future of the industry is headed. Only time will tell who ends up being right in the end, and regardless of how it looks, the games industry is clearly changing rapidly.

Similarly, cross-play will be supported in future multiplayer releases.

On October 29, to coincide with the upcoming launch of Watch Dogs: Legion, Ubisoft will launch Ubisoft Connect, a new ecosystem that will bring all of Uplay and Ubisoft Club together in one single place. Other than that, Ubisoft Connect will also bring with it a few more features that Ubisoft seems to be committing to for the future.

The most crucial of these is cross-platform progression. “Designed for the next generation of gaming and beyond, Ubisoft Connect is just the beginning of Ubisoft’s commitment to making cross-platform features standard in the future,” Ubisoft writes.

Cross-platform progression will be added to future releases, starting with the likes of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Immortals Fenyx Rising, and Riders Republic (upcoming games such as Far Cry 6 and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake aren’t mentioned, so it’s unknown whether they will feature cross-progression as well).

Regardless of whether you’re playing these games on PlayStation or Xbox or PC or Stadia (or Switch, if the game is on it), your progress will be shared across all platforms, as long as your Ubisoft Connect account is linked to the game.

Similarly, cross-platform play will also be supported in most upcoming Ubisoft games with multiplayer.

Ubisoft has mentioned that cross-play and cross-progression will be added in select games, so going forward, whether not these are supported in releases is something we’ll likely find out on a case-by-case basis.
