The most prominent titles are Mortal Kombat 1, recently announced to have sold over 6.2 million copies, and Marvel’s Spider-Man.
However, the strategy RPG's director Takafumi Noma says he "definitely wouldn't say no if it were up to me."

Even in a year as overflowing with excellent RPGs as 2024 has been, Unicorn Overlord stands as one of the genre’s best outings for the year, but though the demand for more of the same will be high given the heights that Vanillaware’s tactical RPG scaled, the studio says it doesn’t have any current plans for future content to follow-up on the title.

Speaking with GamesRadar, game director Takafumi Noma thanked fans for their strong reception for Unicorn Overlord, before stating that currently, Vanillaware doesn’t have DLC or sequels planned. Noma went on to add, however, that he personally hopes to make more Unicorn Overlord content at some point in the future, whatever form that ends up taking.

“We are profoundly grateful for the sheer number of players who have embraced our vision for a new strategy RPG,” the director said. “Many of these players have expressed a wish for DLC or a sequel to the game. While there are currently no plans for further development of this nature, I definitely wouldn’t say no if it were up to me. It would be great if we could make this happen sometime down the line.”

Publisher Atlus announced earlier this year that Unicorn Overlord had sold over 1 million units, while critical reception for the title has also been nearly universally positive, so there’s certainly a chance that Vanillaware decides to capitalize on that success, even if the developer hasn’t traditionally been known to do sequels.

Meanwhile, during the interview, Noma also reiterated that there are no current plans to bring the game to PC.

Unicorn Overlord is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.

Atlus and Vanillaware's acclaimed fantasy tactics RPG crosses another sales milestone, having surpassed a million worldwide sales.

2024 has been a big year for Atlus, and Unicorn Overlord has certainly been a highlight. Not only has the fantasy tactical RPG been a big critical success for the company and for developer Vanillaware, it’s also continuing to sell at a steady rate.

Atlus has announced that Unicorn Overlord has now exceeded 1 million units sold worldwide. To commemorate the milestone, the company has also showcased new artwork by Vanillaware’s Takashi Noma, depicting three of the game’s characters in Berengaria, Melisandre, and Rosalinde. Check out the tweet below.

By the end of March, within less than a month of its release, Unicorn Overlord had sold over 500,000 units worldwide, so with as many units sold since then, it’s maintained decent momentum, especially when compared to past Vanillaware titles.

As per job listings emerging earlier in the year, Vanillaware is currently working on a new fantasy action RPG. Read more on that through here.

Unicorn Overlord is available on PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S. Vanillaware has previously confirmed it doesn’t intend to bring the game to PC.

The studio has confirmed that it's staffing up for its next project, which will be an action RPG set in a fantasy world.

From Dragon’s Crown and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim to, more recently, Unicorn Overlord and more, Japanese developer Vanillaware has delivered a number of notable, well-received titles over the years, and given its track record, it’s no surprise that the studio’s fanbase is as curious about what it’ll work on next as it is. And though concrete details on that front won’t become available for a while, given the fact that the studio only just released Unicorn Overlord not that long ago, it seems some tidbits on Vanillaware’s next project have emerged nonetheless.

Taking to Twitter via its official account, Vanillaware recently confirmed brief details on its next game. Confirming that it’s looking to staff up and directing prospective applicants to listings for various positions, the studio has revealed that it’s working on a new fantasy action RPG.

What exactly it’ll mean for Vanillaware to be making an action RPG remains to be seen – from Unicorn Overlord’s turn-based combat to 13 Sentinel’s real-time strategy, the studio has tried its hand at several different things in the past – but with listings looking for 2D artists and background designers, it would seem that at least in terms of aesthetic and visual design, the project won’t be too different from Vanillaware’s past games.

The developer has also showcased a piece of artwork for the title to go along with its aforementioned tweet. Check it out below.

In the meantime, Unicorn Overlord is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. It has sold over 500,000 units worldwide.

Vanillaware's acclaimed tactical strategy RPG is outpacing its last major title, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, at an impressive pace.

Vanillaware’s Unicorn Overlord launched in a busy month, with Rise of the Ronin and Dragon’s Dogma 2 arriving nearly two weeks later. Nevertheless, it’s seen an impressive reception, selling out physical copies and topping Japanese sales charts for two weeks. Atlus has also released an accolades trailer, confirming over 500,000 units sold. Check it out below.

Though the trailer was uploaded on March 22nd, it looks to have become available recently. For comparison’s sake, the developer’s last major game, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, launched in Japan in November 2019 and worldwide in September 2020. It would sell over 300,000 copies by January 2021.

Of course, Unicorn Overlord is available for several more platforms while also seeing a simultaneous worldwide release. It also doesn’t hurt that the gameplay leans more toward tactical strategy role-playing while offering a compelling story and cast of characters. However, PC players hoping for a port may have to keep waiting. Head here to find out why.

The Nintendo Switch version of Vanillaware and Atlus' RPG hangs on to the top spot, selling an additional 16,000-plus units.

Unicorn Overlord enjoyed an impressive debut in Japan last week with over 74,000 units sold, and as per the latest weekly charts for software and hardware sales in Japan released by Famitsu, the game has held on to that top spot. The fantasy tactics RPG’s Switch version still sits in first place, having sold an additional 16,000 units, though its PS5 and PS4 versions have dropped out of the top 10.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, meanwhile, is still in second place. The action RPG has seen a slow start in the region compared to past mainline Final Fantasy titles, but it sold an additional 11,000-plus units last week, and by this time next week, its total sales in the region will almost certainly have crossed the 300,000 mark.

On the hardware front, all consoles saw a decline in sales. The Nintendo Switch was, unsurprisingly, once again the top-selling console of the week in Japan, moving over 42,000 units, while the PS5 followed in second place, having sold over 26,000 units over the course of the week.

Unicorn Overlord's physical Japanese launch sales are more than twice as high as what developer Vanillaware's previous game, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, managed.

Promptly after Unicorn Overlord’s launch, the game’s physical copies had sold out in Japan, prompting publisher Atlus to apologize for the supply shortages. Unsurprisingly, then, as per Famitsu’s latest weekly charts for hardware and physical software sales in Japan, Unicorn Overlord was the best-selling game in the region last week.

The fantasy tactics RPG occupies three places in the top 10, with the Nintendo Switch version taking first place with over 40,000 units sold), the PS5 version slotting in at No. 3 (over 24,000 units sold), and the PS4 version coming in at No. 8 (over 8,000 units sold). In total, Unicorn Overlord has sold 74,186 physical copies in Japan, which is more than twice as much as what developer Vanillaware’s previous title, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, managed- though that launched for only one platform, unlike Unicorn Overlord.

Meanwhile, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has fallen down to second place. It debuted on top of the charts last week, but saw relatively underwhelming sales by the series’ standards. In its second week, it has seen a 91% drop in sales, which is more or less in line with the second week sales drops seen by Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

On the hardware side of things, the Nintendo Switch continues to see increased sales, bafflingly enough.
The tactical RPG seems to have got off to a better start than Atlus had anticipated, with physical copies already having sold out.

Unicorn Overlord launched worldwide last week, and especially in Japan, the Vanillaware-developed fantasy tactics RPG seems to have got off to a solid start- better than publisher Atlus might have anticipated, in fact.

In a recently published message on its website, the company thanked players in Japan for “the very positive reception”, which, it turns out, has seen its physical copies go out of stock within days of release. Atlus has apologized for the supply shortages, and says that another shipment is coming in soon- though players may want to pre-book their copies, given how popular the game has proven in Japan.

Vanillaware’s CEO George Kamitani recently revealed that the studio ran out of funding during Unicorn Overlord’s development, and had to dip into its own pocket to get it past the finish line, so the developer will certainly be relieved to see the game performing well.

Unicorn Overlord is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. Atlus says there are currently no plans to bring the game to PC.

The wrestling game has debuted on top of the weekly UK retail charts, while Vanillaware's Unicorn Overlord has entered at No. 7.

Last week was another busy one with more major new releases hitting store shelves, a couple of which have found their way into the latest weekly charts for physical software sales in the UK. As shared by GamesIndustry’s Christopher Dring on Twitter, WWE 2K24 had a strong debut, taking the top spot in its first week on sale, with physical launch sales in the UK being 26 percent higher than what its predecessor managed in the region upon its release last year.

Fellow new release, Vanillaware and Atlus’ Unicorn Overlord, also debuted in the top 10, finding itself in the No. 7 position. Vanillaware-developed titles haven’t generally been the biggest, most mass market sellers, so a debut in seventh place may have been a decent one for the fantasy tactics RPG. 60 percent of its physical launch week sales came on the Nintendo Switch, 34 percent on PS5, and 5 percent on Xbox Series X.

Meanwhile, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which saw a somewhat underwhelming physical launch debut last week, fell down to No. 2, with its sales dropping 89 percent week-on-week. Though a second-week drop is far from unusual, Dring says an 89 percent drop is “on the higher side of normal.” The action RPG also saw a relatively weaker launch in Japan last week, by the series’ usually high standards.

Unicorn Overlord is No.7 in the UK boxed charts. Granted, it doesn’t take much to get in there these days. But still!

WWE 2K24 is No.1, with launch sales up 26% on the debut of WWE 2K23. Nice!

FF7: Rebirth is down to No.2 with an 89% drop week-on-week.

All physical data.

The tactical role-playing game is available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PS4 and Nintendo Switch and is Vanillaware's biggest game to date.

Vanillaware’s Unicorn Overlord, a tactical strategy RPG set in a medieval fantasy world, is out now for Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 and Nintendo Switch. Developed by the team behind 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, it focuses on crown prince Alain as he ventures to Fevirth to free it from the clutches of the traitorous general Valmore. Check out the launch trailer below.

Even with the Liberation Army by his side, it’s not an easy task. Alain can recruit more allies by exploring, meeting different characters (over 60 in total) and completing side quests. The campaign involves liberating towns and forts and rebuilding them to allow vendors and taverns to operate for various benefits.

Combat is akin to auto-battling, with players able to set conditions for skills and passives going in. They can also swap units in battle to reinforce others, with several classes to choose from. For more details, check out the combat trailer here. Unfortunately, despite Atlus bringing several of its current titles to PC, there are no plans to port Unicorn Overlord to the platform.
