After a long absence, Sega has brought back the beloved Valkyria series with Valkyria Revolution; unfortunately, the new game appears to be a misfire, and most series fans are lamenting the new direction that Sega has taken with the game, which may end up conclusively killing all interest in the franchise once and for all.

However, it’s not quite that bad, and some fans of the series may yet be able to wrest some enjoyment out of it. Valkyria Revolution, the newest installment in Sega’s turn based strategy game series, launches in North America and Europe today. To celebrate the launch of the new game, Sega has released a brand new launch trailer for the game, which you can see for yourself below.

Valkyria Revolution, in spite of its name, is actually a bit of a departure from the story, tone, and aesthetic of the previous games in the series- it was met with a fairly negative reception upon its launch in Japan earlier this year, where it ended up underpeforming. Whether or not western audiences take to this new game better is something that yet remains to be seen.

Valkyria Revolution, the newest entry in the series, will be launching in the west on June 30 this year, Sega confirmed. The game will be launching on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One digitally and at retail, with a digital only version also coming to the PlayStation Vita. The game will also get a special Vanguard Edition, which comes with a Soundtrack CD including twelve songs composed by Yasunori Mitsuda, and a 1.5 inches pin portraying the emblem of the Vanargand anti-valkyria unit, on the Xbox One and PS4.

That’s not all, either- we also got a brand new trailer for the game, which you can see for yourself below. The trailer showcases the new setting in the game (we are no longer in the World War 2 era, but rather in the early Industrial era), as well as the new battle system- changes that may alienate some fans, but which are likely to win new ones over.

Valkyria Revolution is going to be in Japan in just under a week and will eventually hit North America in the second quarter of 2017. Coming to the PS4, Xbox One and PC when it does indeed launch, there has been a bit of excitement surrounding the new JRPG.

With that in mind, the team behind the game has released a new trailer that gives users an in-depth look at one of the main characters in the game, Amleth. Not only are we officially introduced to this character but we get a very good look at the dramatic action that is going to unfold in Valkyria Revolution.

The next awaited entry in the Valkyria series, Valkyria Revolution, will be coming over to the west after all- Sega today announced that the game will launch in Q2 2017 in the west, with Deep Silver handling publishing duties for Europe.

This news is significant because, given that Valkyria Chronicles 3 wasn’t ever localized, and fans of the series can never quite be sure that they will get the games released over here. The news is also significant, because the game, originally announced as a PS4 exclusive, before a Vita SKU was thrown into the mix in Japan, will now also be coming over to Xbox One in the west, ending any notions of exclusivity for the title once and for all- it will be interesting to see how many professed fans of the series were interested in the title only because of its exclusivity status. At the same time, it will also be interesting to see how well such an unabashedly Japanese game will manage to do on Xbox One.

Valkyria Revolution will release in Japan on PS4 and PS Vita on January 19, 2017. The game, which ditches the old turn based gameplay mechanics, promises to completely overhaul the franchise, so it will be interesting to see how well it goes down with fans.
