Will replace VGA/VGX; Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, and Valve all working together to produce these.

The Video Game Awards (known as the VGAs right up until last year, when they were rebranded to VGX) were absolutely terrible- we knew this, everyone knew this. They were a laughing stock. Apparently, Geoff Keighley, who produced and hosted them, has had enough, as he’s jumped ship and decided to start a new Awards platform that he hopes will become the awards this industry deserves, and become a standard.

They are called The Game Awards, and they feature all the bigwigs in this industry coming together. All four platform holders- Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, and Valve for Steam- are collaborating in producing these along with Keighley, and major third party publishers, including Warner Bros., EA, and Ubisoft, are all also on board.

The Game Awards will be aired live on December 5 2014 across a record number of devices via livestream- this includes all smart devices such as smartphones and tablets, as well as PCs, and all PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo game platforms.

Plus, to ensure that the spectacle of new game reveals at the VGA- arguably the one good thing about them- isn’t lost, we are promised there will be lots of that as well.

Potentially, this could be big and excellent. Whether it actually turns out that way remains to be seen. Stay tuned either way.

They are also now called VGX.

Although the exact integrity and quality of Spike Video Game Awards every year has been variously suspect, the media glitz surrounding them has been a major industry even for years for now, with big name video games like Mass Effect 3, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, The Last of Us, Dark Souls II, and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, all getting their world premieres there.

Looks like the organizers understand that: this year’s Spike VGA have been renamed to VGX, with more of an emphasis on world premieres and gameplay demoes for the video games, and less on the actual awards. The setting will be an intimate studio setting, and it will focus on extended gameplay demoes and trailers for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One software.

As if to drive home the point even further, no nominees for the actual awards have been revealed yet (although you can vote for the most anticipated game).

The Spike VGX 2013 take place December 7. Stay tuned.
