Kinect Rift?

Virtual Reality, for now, seems to be all the rage in gaming at the moment. It started with the originally Kickstarted and now Facebook owned Oculus Rift, and then Sony jumped on board with its own headset, both of these being due out some time next year.

Microsoft, it seems, wants in on the fun too, as new rumors are pegging an unveil of a new virtual reality headset from them at E3 2015.

“The sources revealed that the gaming device’s development is handled by Microsoft’s hardware team, which is also the one in charge of Surface tablet development,” DigiTimes wrote.

Microsoft has experimented with alternative methods of user interaction with video games in the past, including Augmented Reality, Illuminiroom, Fortaleza, and of course, Kinect, but this would be the first indication that they are thinking of jumping into VR as well.

Whether or not they actually do it, or do it off successfully (or whether or not the VR market is even viable instead of being a fad) remains to be seen.

Or as EA calls it, "get in" gaming.

Following our report on a potential VR Headset announcement by Sony, EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson has said that the company is currently working on potentially developing a virtual reality device that will deliver what EA calls “get in” gaming via regular, normal-people VR tech or “through some hologram that evolves out of your living room floor.”

Andrew Wilson talks about EA’s three gaming “modalities”- “Lean back” or console gaming, “lean in” or PC gaming and “lean in” or handheld gaming. Wilson says that with VR, EA is looking to get into “get in” gaming.

“The thing I challenge my team to right now is, ‘Listen, there’s clearly a desire to add a modality of play to the three we’re currently focused on,” Wilson said while speaking with Polygon. “I don’t know who the technology partner is that’s going to deliver that modality for us, but let’s start thinking now about the experiences […],’ so that we can deliver experiences that make sense for you; experiences that deliver on the promise and the fantasy of being inside a video game.”
