Like beating your head against a wall (for fun).

Games with soul-crushing difficulty have a certain undeniable charm to them, because when developers manage to strike that elusive yet perfect balance between challenging and fair – or come close to doing so, at any rate – they deliver experiences that offer something that nothing else can. The satisfaction of overcoming an insurmountable hurdle, the swelling sense of victory that accompanies defeating a massive, deadly boss- these things are priceless. Thankfully, there was no shortage of games in 2019 that gave us exactly those things, and in this feature, we’ll be looking at a few such titles. Without further ado, let’s get started.

WARGROOVE

Position itself as a spiritual successor to the fan-favourite Nintendo series Advance Wars, Wargroove had a lot to live up to, and for the most part, it met those expectations expertly. And among the many things that endeared Chucklefish’s strategy title to the masses was its difficulty- Wargroove is a challenging game, and nearly every fight, every skirmish in the game is an uphill battle. And while Wargroove does occasionally become a bit too harsh with its difficulty, by and large it maintains a pretty healthy and consistent balance.

Chucklefish was hyping up its first free DLC content for turn-based tactics title Wargroove over the past few months. Now, Double Trouble officially has a release date – it’s coming February 6th for Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. PS4 players will receive it “soon”. Check out the newest trailer below.

Double Trouble focuses on the Outlaw Commanders, a group of rogues that are planning a huge heist. Players will get to control Wulfar, the twins Errol and Orla, and Vesper. The campaign can either be played co-op locally and online or solo.

Along with new Commanders, there are two new units – the Thieves and Riflemen – along with new Arcade missions. Public and Private lobbies for multiplayer are also coming along with updates for the editor. You can also expect some new music tracks for the Outlaws. All in all, Double Trouble is looking like a fantastic reason to jump into Wargroove. Stay tuned for more details as it nears release.

A new trailer and release date will be revealed after the final testing phase.

Chucklefish’s Wargroove will be receiving some free DLC in the near future but it’s not just one free Commander. Instead, we’re getting the Double Trouble DLC which introduces a new story co-op campaign (which can be played solo) and three new Outlaw Commanders. Two new unit types – Thieves and Riflemen – will also be joining the fray.

Along with Wulfar, players can control the twins Errol and Orla or Vesper, the latter receiving more details soon. The story concerns a kidnapping and the rogues planning an enormous heist. How the campaign plays out remains to be seen but there will also be new Arcade missions, Public and Private multiplayer lobbies and a new Volcano map theme.

Balance changes are also coming, which you can see below. The DLC is in the final testing phase as per the developer so once submissions are done, the release date will be announced along with a new trailer. Wargroove: Double Trouble is coming to Xbox One, PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Wulfar is the chief of the Outlaw clan, wielding a massive hammer.

Several months after promising new content in the works for Wargroove, Chucklefish has confirmed that a new Commander is coming. Available for free at launch, it’s Wulfar the Outlaw Chief, capable of teeing enemies off with his giant hammer. Wulfar is also generally flexible and intimidating, making him a tough Commander to fight against.

As for his hammer, it sends enemies into other foes across the map, dealing damage to both. You can also hit enemies into the ocean to insta-kill them. It’s also possible to send your allies flying but for the sake of better positioning. The tactical possibilities with Wulfar are fairly cool by this point.

More information will be coming in the next few weeks. Chucklefish noted that a livestream of the DLC would be available “soon” so stay tuned. Wargroove is available for Xbox One, PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch. Check out our official review of the game here.

Chucklefish shares its upcoming plans for the Advance Wars-inspired strategy title.

Despite a long development cycle, Wargroove has been a fairly strong success for Chucklefish. A number of post-launch updates have been released and the title is also out now for PS4. However, there’s even more in the works as Chucklefish revealed plans for future content.

There are currently three updates in the works: Patch v1.3.0 will add Korean language support, bug fixes and lay the foundation for PC mods. The next patch will implement PC mods via the Steam Workshop and allows players to do things such as, oh, having recruiting dogs into their armies. The patch will follow v1.3.0 “closely” and be in open beta.

Finally, there’s update v2.0, a major patch that offers new content, lobby listings for locating public games, balance adjustments for some units and commanders, and much more. New Map Editor options are coming – the developer is currently playing around with ideas like Gizmos, Counters, Metalocations and much more. Read all about it on the official website through the link above.

It’s worth noting that everything mentioned above may not make it into the final updates. Chucklefish advises waiting for official patch notes before getting too hyped. In the meantime, we’ll have to wait for more information on when each patch will be coming.

The acclaimed turn-based strategy RPG unfortunately doesn't have cross-play on PS4.

Chucklefish’s Wargroove is finally available for the PlayStation 4 following a significant delay. The turn-based strategy title pays homage to Advance Wars and features a number of commanders with their own unique abilities, called Grooves. Check out the launch trailer below.

Wargroove has a meaty campaign to it as players follow Cherrystone’s newly crowned Queen Mercia as she battles the Felheim Legion. However, each of the 15 commanders has their own campaign to play through, showcasing their backstories and goals. On top of all this, players also have access to PvP and co-op multiplayer.

A custom map editor is also available, providing a large supply of community maps to enjoy. The PS4 version doesn’t have cross-platform play with the Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. However, it can access all community maps available on other platforms as well. Stay tuned for more details and updates on Wargroove in the coming months.

The Advance Wars-inspired strategy title won't have cross-play, but will support all community maps.

Chucklefish’s acclaimed turn-based tactics title Wargroove finally has a release date on PlayStation 4. It’s out on July 23rd, more than five months after it released for Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Sadly, cross-play with other platforms will not be supported on PS4.

What you can expect is a fairly large campaign and over 12 characters with their own different abilities and units. There are also various editors for creating custom cutscenes, maps, and entire campaigns. Additional modes include Arcade Mode, which sees players battling five different enemies in a row, and Puzzle Mode, where you must win challenges in a single turn.

The good news is that PS4 players will be able to access the user-created content and maps available to all other platforms. This allows for a near-endless amount of replay value (even recreations of classic Advance Wars maps). For more information on Wargroove’s gameplay, check out GamingBolt’s official review here.

The Advance Wars-style strategy title is currently in the certification process.

Chucklefish’s Wargroove received its fair share of acclaim when it launched earlier this year for Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. However, the PS4 version was missing and still hasn’t been released. Fortunately, a release date will be coming “very soon.”

The developer has confirmed that the PS4 version is currently in the certification process. It also noted in its blog post, “The PS4 version took a little longer than anticipated for a number of reasons—some of which we can talk about about, such as some technical problems that had to be solved around how multiplayer and content sharing would work, and other elements we’re not allowed to talk about for NDA reasons!”

The focus over time was to ensure “as much parity as possible between all the different platform versions” of the game. While cross-platform multiplayer isn’t included in the PS4 version, players can still download community maps and share them with users on other platforms. That’s good news for someone who wants to, say, play the original Advance Wars’ campaign maps.

You can check out our review of Wargroove here. The game has received a number of updates since February, including the addition of checkpoints, co-op maps, and much more. It’s also available on Xbox Game Pass. Stay tuned for more details on future content and updates.

Eight new games head to the Xbox Game Pass library in May.

We’ve had a string of months where some excellent titles have been added to the Xbox Game Pass catalog, with both March and April seeing some strong games joining its ever-growing library. May is looking similarly exciting, and offers a number of great games. Of the eight games being added, the most notable is Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, which is probably among the best stories and single player campaigns you’ll find in a first person shooter.

Chucklefish’s recently released turn based strategy title Wargroove also joins Game Pass. With solid gameplay, a decent campaign, and excellent creation tools, it’s a great game regardless, but at the price of free, it’s an absolute steal. Also part of the new games is Fullbright’s excellent science fiction adventure title Tacoma, while Paradox Interactive’s unique simulation game Surviving Mars joins the library as well.

Deck13’s Soulslike sci-fi title The Surge is also coming to Game Pass, while the recently released Xbox One version of the MMO Black Desert, Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, and strategy RPG For the King are included as well.

You can get the details on exactly when each of the eight titles joins the Game Pass catalog below:

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus – May 2

Wargroove – May 2

Surviving Mars – May 9

Tacoma – May 9

Black Desert – May 9

For the King – May 10

The Surge – May 16

Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham – May 16

“Advance Wars, but with a dog” is an undeniably appealing proposition.

Nintendo has, as it usually does, shared on the Nintendo Switch news app, the charts for the most downloaded games on the Nintendo eShop for the month of February, and there’s a fair few surprises here, alongside some games doing as you might expect.

First off—yes, Fortnite was the most downloaded game for the month of February. As it always is. However, from here, things get interesting. Wargroove was second place, with the shadow-dropped Final Fantasy 9 coming in third, and starting the regime of PlayStation Final Fantasy games on Nintendo consoles in style. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate surged to fourth place, ahead of even New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, which launched in January, and is now in sixth place.

Usual indie darlings Hollow Knight, Undertale, and Stardew Valley continued to perform strongly, as did third party games such as Diablo 3 and Civilization 6. You can check out the full charts for yourself below.

1. Fortnite
2. Wargroove
3. Final Fantasy IX
