WarioWare Gold, the newest entry in the long running microgames franchise, which lets the designers at Intelligent Systems and Nintendo unleash their full manic creativity like they can nowhere else, is finally out today in North America- the first WarioWare game in almost a decade (and the first retail one since Smooth Moves launched on the Wii in 2006).

The game promises the best collection of microgames the series has ever seen, as well as Wario’s brand of oddball and gross-out humor at its very best- and to ensure people know that this game is out, Nintendo of America’s Twitter account has been, er, taken over by Wario. Who has then gone on to laugh maniacally, change the account’s profile picture, and post a series of tweets all about the game. I mean, that’s one way to market it.

3DS software sales are actually down immensely at this point, owing to the system being in its eighth year on the market. Nonetheless, WarioWare Gold seems to be one of the finest titles in its library, and one that fully leverages everything the ageing 3DS hardware has to offer. I hope this marketing will get the game to be at least a moderate success.

WarioWare Gold is the first game in the beloved microgames franchise that we have received in a while- and while there are some who might be a bit miffed that it’s coming to the Nintendo 3DS, and not the Switch, it is also hard to deny that the 3DS is an inventive machine that can be used for all sorts of unusual applications- in other words, perfect for WarioWare, eh?

If you need more convincing on how this would work, however, there’s good news! A demo for the game is available to download on the Nintendo eShop for the 3DS now. The demo will presumably include a sampling of the hundreds (literally) of microgames the final package is slated to have when it launches; at least one new microgame is also included in the demo, though I’ll defer to series veterans to be able to identify how many of the microgames in the demo are returning ones from the previous entries, and how many are all new.

Hopefully, WarioWare Gold does well when it launches on the Nintendo 3DS exclusively, later this month in Europe and Australia, and on August 2 everywhere else.

The Nintendo 3DS will never die- now in its eighth year on the market, Nintendo has made it clear that it intends on keeping the system around for the next year at the very least; today, it showed exactly how it plans to do that.

In addition to Detective Pikachu, which was already announced for a 3DS release later this month, Nintendo revealed three major games for the 3DS at their just concluded Nintendo Direct presentation- the first is WarioWare Gold, which brings the largest collection of WarioWare microgames ever to the 3DS, and utilizes the touch screen, gyro controls, 3D effect, microphone, and buttons. Next up is a port of the GameCube classic Luigi’s Mansion (which incidentally got a sequel on 3DS); both these games are due out this year.

The final big 3DS game announcement is Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story. Arguably the greatest Mario RPG this side of SuperStar Saga, this game was an absolute riot on the DS, and will now be available on 3DS too. This game launches on 3DS next year, because the 3DS will truly never die.
