Mad Max is an upcoming open world video game with a focus on vehicular combat and foot based combat that is set in an post apocalyptic world that is based entirely on that of the Mad Max series of video games.

The game is currently being developed by Avalanche Studios who have previously found fame with their previous games in the Just Cause series of games. The game is being developed for a cross generation and cross platform loss, expected to come to Microsoft Windows supported PC’s, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

Set to be published by Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment (Batman Arkham series, Lego Series, Mortal Kombat series) the game is expected to arrive at some time in 2015 and it will be made available at retail and via digital download.

Development

There is little known about the development of Mad Max at the minute, this is likely due to the fact that Avalanche Studios are also developing the highly anticipated Just Cause 3, thus drawing the focus away from a vehicle based combat game. A game in a genre that has fallen out of popularity in recent years. This might have been a misinterpretation of facts on the part of the media, however as Max can leave his vehicle and combat enemies on foot, but the shown gameplay seems extremely clunky.

The game was first officially revealed to the public during E3 of 2013 which took place on June 10th. The reveal came during the PlayStation Press Conference held by Sony and the game was actually at first mistaken for Fallout 4 by many viewers until the game’s title was put on screen.

The game was initially slated for release at some time in 2014 though a specific release window wasn’t given. Despite this, the game slipped and was instead pushed back to 2015 with no reason given at the time of writing.

When George Miller was asked why he was interested in making a game, he said “It’s four-dimensional storytelling. A game can literally become the equivalent of a novel. That is the thing that people like me who write screenplays envy about novelists: that you can actually stop time and explore little cul de sacs. Whereas in a movie, you’d love to stop and examine that character, but you can’t.”

When the game was revealed, there was some controversy regarding the voice actor who was portraying the games rough shod hero. Max typically sports an Australian accent, but in the trailer he was undeniably American. This initially rankled fans, but the developers assured the fan base that the Australian accent would be in the final build of the game.

Whilst plot details remain scarce, what we do know about the game is somewhat shallow. What we do know about the game is that Max, the games protagonist, is travelling through the movie franchises famous apocalyptic desert wastelands in search of his vehicle.

This vehicle is treasured by Max and is known as the Pursuit Special, but is sometimes also referred to as The Interceptor.

Max will be able to make use of a variety of weaponry throughout the game, be the fired from his hand or used via a vehicle based weapon structure that has been made by his accomplice, Chumbucket.

The weapon that Max will use the most, if not entirely, is his shotgun. Though given the setting of the game, there isn’t much ammunition readily on hand, thus making melee combat a much better option.

Luckily, Max is an adept combatant when it comes to close quarters brawling. The game will feature a customisation element that will allow for vehicle customisation as well as upgrades to Max himself. Though information on these upgrades hasn’t been made available just yet.

Chumbucket – Chumbucket is the acting Mechanic for Max working on his vehicles and upgrading them. This allows Max to better combat his foes. Chumbucket is known as “The Angel of Combustion”.

Max Rockatansky [Mad Max/Road Warrior] – Max Rockatansky is a rough but faithful and reliable individual that lives in the apocalyptic wastelands of the not so far future.

Batman: Arkham Knight is an upcoming and highly anticipated action adventure video game set in an open world environment currently in development by the Warner Brothers subsidiary, Rocksteady Studios (Batman Arkham series, excluding Batman Arkham Origins).

The game is set to be published by Rocksteady Studios parent company, Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment. Batman: Arkham Knight, which will be running on the Unreal Engine 3, is poised to be the fourth game in the main series and is the newest entry in regards to both time of release and chronological order. The game was slated to launch worldwide on October 14th of 2014 but has since been pushed back to an unspecific 2015, the title will still be launching on Microsoft Windows, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Development

Batman: Arkham Knight was first made public through the unveiling of promotional materials in February of 2014 before they were due to be shown in March, the video game retailer GameStop received a number of promotional materials such as banners and window advertisements which were presumably leaked by staff members.

This entry into the award winning and critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham series will see the return of the series creators, RockSteady Studios as the developers with the previous Batman title (origins) having been developed by Warner Bros. Games Montreal (Batman: Arkham Origins was created to fill the three year gap that would have been left between Arkham City and Arkham Knight). A development decision was made early in the conceptual stages that the latest venture into Arkham would be developed exclusively for the current 8th generation of games consoles (controversially excluding the Wii U), reasoning that it would allow them to better exercise their plans for the game without having to restrict features and gameplay elements because of older, fundamentally weaker systems. A feature that won’t be returning to the game is the Multiplayer, not because some fans felt that it was tacked on, but because the vision for the game was one of a single player experience, RockSteady Studios game director Sefton Hill has stated that this is a single-player game and there will be no multiplayer.

The decision to forgo multiplayer and focus on a current generation, single player exclusive game has resulted in the games development cycle yielding many interesting results. Unlike the previous games cutscenes which where pre rendered, Batman: Arkham Knight will have it’s cinematics rendered in-engine. The game will feature much denser crowds of enemies, ranging from five times those visible in Batman: Arkham City, to riots consisting of up to 50 individual combatants. Environments are now more dynamic, items in the game world can be destroyed by enemies or during combat, some thugs even spray graffiti.

Batman: Arkham Knight will also make use of Nvidia APEX technology to render cloth (such as Batmans cape) in a more realistic way, meaning it (and other effected objects) will interact with outside forces (wind, movement) much more realistically. The most likely APEX modules to be used (based on available screenshots and speculation at time of writing) are, APEX Destruction, APEX Clothing, APEX Particles and APEX Turbulence.

The acclaimed and much loved voice actor, Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series), will be reprising his role after stepping down from Batman: Arkham Origins. This was partially revealed at Dallas Comic Con in 2013 when he said that he had been working on “the next Arkhm”.

Gameplay

A common feature that will be returning is Batmans use of Gadgets to outfight and outmanoeuvre his foes. Ranging from the classic “Batarang” throwing weapon to the Detective vision visor located inside Batmans cowl. A few gameplay tweaks will result in an improved countering system to allow the player to tackle the greater masses of enemies. The cape which enables limited flight has been tweaked to allow for longer periods of gliding and steeper dives which can be used to gain both speed and height (as well as being used to power an area of effect attack in previous games that is expected to return).

One change made during the early stages of development was the decision to remove the fast travel system from the game in its entirety, with Rocksteady Studios reasoning that traversing the city is a part of the gameplay experience and that removing it would detract from the games appeal. When development began, an early build of the Batmobile (Batmans signature vehicle) was placed in the streets of the city but the streets proved to be too small and clustered to allow the vehicle to operate properly and that this made driving a counter intuitive means of navigation.

Thus, the streets of Gotham have been broadened to allow for improved vehicle usability, this change also allowed for the new masses of enemies to be manoeuvre, making combat a more dynamic and involving affair. Alongside the width of streets being altered, buildings have been increased in height giving the entire city a much grander sense of verticality which works well with the Batmobiles new eject function.

Story

The events of Batman: Arkham Knight take place approximately a year after Batman: Arkham City. With the death of the Joker, who succumbed to his illness and injuries, Bamtan struggles with the absence of his long standing foe who often served as a driving force in his personal war on crime and can’t fully come to terms with it. Without the Joker terrorizing the people of Gotham, they have grown complacent, feeling safe in a city that has seen a drastic decrease in crime. This grants his remaining enemies the chance to unite against him with Harely Quinn holding a personal grudge, mourning the loss of her lover.

One of Batmans long standing foes, The Scarecrow, returns to the city making and issues a threat to the city as a whole. He threatens the entire populace with his newly developed toxins and hidden bombs. This forces the people of Gotham City to be evacuated, leaving the streets teeming with thugs and Batman holding his vigilante vigil.

Characters

Beneath is a list of confirmed characters for Batman Arkham Knight:

Bruce Wayne/Batman – Batman returns as the player protagonist in his war against the criminals of Gotham City.

Oracle – Barbara Gordon is the daughter of the police commissioner and acts as a sort of outside contact for Batman, she’s been known to aid him on many occasions.

Scarecrow – Scarecrow makes his return as a masked mad man of fierce intellect with a particular skill for character manipulation and the development of potent poisons and neurotoxins.

Harley Quinn – Harley Quinn, formerly known as Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel, was once a psychiatrist who grew to have an obsession with her patient, the Joker. Her obsession grew so great that she believed herself to be in love with him. Harley now holds a particularly volatile grudge against Batman, blaming him for the death of her lover.

The Penguin – Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot, also known as the Penguin is a cruel and sadistic crime lord and businessman. He runs one of (if not the largest) black market in Gotham and is often responsible for arming the thugs on the streets.

Two Face – Harvey Dent, also known as Two Face was once a figure for the future of Gotham, expected to usher in an age of prosperity and growth for the city. Two Face is a potent force often best avoided as even his closest companions can’t always predict his plans, this is due to most of his decision making being determined by a 50/50 coin toss.

The Riddler – Edward Nashton, also known as The Riddler is another one of Batmans foes that’s blessed and cursed with a powerful mind that he turned towards dark deeds. His intelligence drives him towards trying to fulfil his egotistical tendencies, he seeks to have his intellect recognized and often uses crimes as a means to prove his intellectual might.

The Arkham Knight – Very little is known about the Arkham Knight except that he appears to be a exceptionally well trained and well armoured individual.

Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game.

Ed Boon, the man behind the Mortal Kombat franchise has revealed a few interesting details about Mortal Kombat X on his Twitter feed. First of all the story in Mortal Komabt X is a bit hard to explain with Ed Boon stating that the plot will be a “continuation of Mortal Kombat 9 plus a brand new one.”

He also revealed that there will be new fighters in the game and two of them are apparently his favorites. Both of the new fighters will be showcased during this year’s E3 along with a brand new gameplay footage. He also teased that fatalities will be more gory this time around.

Mortal Kombat X will launch next year for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The developers also released a new trailer which you can check out here. Mind you…the entire trailer is in CG but you can expect that level of graphics may be in 2030.

Does The Hobbit "build" on past success?

LEGO branded video games from Warner Bros and TT Games consistently manage to disprove two truths about gaming: that movie tie-ins invariably suck and that finding a winning formula and simply tweaking it time and time again will alienate your audience. The release of LEGO The Hobbit – spanning the story of the first two Peter Jackson Hobbit movies: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, may be the third title that bears the LEGO name released since late last year but it proves to be yet another entertaining interpretation of a much-loved tale. Combining the trademark puzzling and collecting mechanics we’re now well accustomed to with this series of games, it somehow manages to feel fresh and fun, and far more than just a simple facelift.

The campaign itself is spread over 16 levels, lasts around six hours and takes all the best scenes from these first two films. As ever, even completion leaves you with a staggering amount of exploration and collecting to do; the freeplay levels and characters that unlock will absorb many more hours of your time.

"Although only a few companions set off on their epic journey, the character roster quickly grows as you progress, with over 90 crammed into the game. Each has their own set of skills and abilities to help you in your quest."

There’s the usual humour, which combines well with the rudimentary puzzles and nugget collecting, as well as the occasional bit of QTE thrown in for good measure. Beyond the fairly lengthy campaign – there are plenty of side missions and objectives to complete too, as well as a smattering of mini games. None of the conundrums will have you racking your brains for the solution but some are suitably tricky to get you thinking, so it’s ideal for the younger audience.

The game closely follows key scenes from the film, adding LEGO’s inimitable charm to the proceedings. In fact, after playing for a while, I’d occasionally pause and watch some of the film to compare the scenes… right from the impressive dragon attack at the start, it’s clear that Travellers Tales’ version had been lovingly recreated block by coloured block.

Although only a few companions set off on their epic journey, the character roster quickly grows as you progress, with over 90 crammed into the game. Each has their own set of skills and abilities to help you in your quest. Some wield huge hammers to shift boulders, others have spades to discover treasures or sling shots for range attacks and to activate otherwise hard-to-reach buttons.

"Although it’s easy to switch between the many controllable characters using the pop up radial dial, it can be tricky to differentiate between them and know who has the skill you require."

Having a band of dwarves at your side is quite handy too – by “buddying up” they can combine to smash otherwise immovable obstacles, defeat larger enemies or you can stack the little fellows on top of one another and shimmy up them to out-of-reach areas.

Although it’s easy to switch between the many controllable characters using the pop up radial dial, it can be tricky to differentiate between them and know who has the skill you require. Unlike the recent Marvel game, which featured the likes of Hulk, Captain and America – all very recognisable figures – it can be tough to distinguish between the Hobbit’s many characters who look largely the same.

Collecting objects dotted about the levels takes on a new meaning this time round, thanks to the ability to craft new items. Making collecting a more important facet of the game is a nice idea but it can occasionally be frustrating. To forge some objects you need a certain amount of loot – come up short and you won’t be able to proceed. What this means in practice is that you may have to traipse around looking for the final few collectibles, which can be a little annoying.

Anyways, find the required number of items objects and a mini-game pops up. You then watch as a number of LEGO blocks fall down the screen to build the item, occasionally pausing to highlight the next brick that’s needed. Simply find the matching block before the timer ticks down and you’ll complete the task, earning yourself some extra nuggets for your efforts. There’s not much to it – but it does feel like you’re actually building something – and children will enjoy it.

"This is a true family-friendly title and accessible to all ages, especially with its local co-op gameplay. As a grizzled aging gamer, I certainly enjoyed playing a part in a story I’ve read many times over the years, whereas my children loved exploring, coin collecting and the many construction-set mini games."

Signposting is great and it’s easy to navigate the vast fantasy world. A mini map in the bottom left of the screen shows your objectives and route, while a trail of light blue coins steers you in the right direction too. There were some slight niggles with the camera angles that can occasionally be a little obstructive but it’s certainly nothing major.

Visually, it looks superb. The many locations are perfectly replicated in building block form too, from Moriaand Erebor all the way to the Lonely Mountain. Hobbiton, for example, is lush and green, with plenty of hustle and bustle around the village and loads to see and do. Many of the dwellings can be accessed and explored, hiding numerous challenges and tasks for the opportune adventurer. I spent ages exploring the rolling hills and trying to track down some stray goats who had wondered from their pen, for example.

The voice acting and narration is equally polished, making it instantly accessible to those familiar or new to Tolkien’s epic. This tale of Trolls and Orcs is fantastically well-scripted and the set pieces and scenes are faithful to the films. As if roaming Middle-earth to find those elusive blocks and treasures wasn’t enough to keep you coming back for more indefinitely, there should also be extra content released to coincide with the third and final film, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, at some point in the future.

This is a true family-friendly title and accessible to all ages, especially with its local co-op gameplay. As a grizzled aging gamer, I certainly enjoyed playing a part in a story I’ve read many times over the years, whereas my children loved exploring, coin collecting and the many construction-set mini games. It’s not a patch on the recent Marvel game but a decent addition to your collection nonetheless.

Batman: Arkham Knight, the next chapter in the Rocksteady Studios franchise, has finally been revealed and it will be releasing for PS4, Xbox One and PC. It has a release date of “TBC 2014” and promises to be the “explosive finale” to the series.

The GAME listing also promises that Batman will face “the ultimate threat against the city he is sworn to protect. The Scarecrow returns to unite an impressive roster of super villains, including Penguin, Two-Face and Harley Quinn, to destroy The Dark Knight forever.”

We’ll also get to drive the Batmobile for the first time, which will navigate both roads and skylines. Perhaps similar to the Batmobile that Dick Grayson and Damien Wayne used when teaming up? We certainly hope so.

Arkham Knight is expected to be officially revealed in the newest issue of Game Informer, which will be out today, so stay tuned for more information and updates.

Breaking things and reconstructing things is the best way to play, but is it enjoyable?

If there’s one thing the Lego video games never fail to do it’s to bring out your inner-fiend that craves the child-like destruction of smashing things to pieces without the interruption of sense or logic. The purpose of Lego to put pieces together, build monumental structures, and replicate figures from popular culture is clearly not as fun as sending it all to ruin, as you smash, barge, and drill your way through everything in sight.

Following the same path as the movie of the same name, Lego the Movie game places you into the shoes of Emmet a construction site worker who is mistakenly identified as a key figure in saving the world. As overdone and cheesy as the storyline sounds, it molds itself together quite well without overdoing the phrase “The Chosen One”. It also helps that other popular characters of pop culture and fan-fiction make an entrance into the game, those being the likes of Batman, Superman, and a many more to unlock as you progress.

Within the immense excitement of all these playable characters, they proved to be more of an interesting set of individuals than Emmet himself. Taking control of each assigned character through the use of a scroll wheel makes character choice quick and easy, and a joy to play with.

"While the game doesn't establish any specific classes that hold each character in specific groups, which I'm very thankful for by the way, it does assign specific character traits in order to overcome certain objectives and a benefit in defeating certain enemy types."

Lego the Movie plays upon your own addictive nature of looting and collecting everything in sight by allowing almost everything in the game to be destructible. This in-turn is changed into pieces of Lego which you rank up as points. Since the environments are naturally scattered with them plus the fact you can take in more by destroying objects, expect to be pacing back and forth in your own addictive enjoyment as you wreck “n” collect.

Combining special character abilities with weapons and tools specific to that character, the player unlocks more characters as he or she progresses through the game, all starring in the movie those of which are also free to play as, outside of the main story. The controls for each of these characters remain for the most part the same. While the game doesn’t establish any specific classes that hold each character in specific groups, which I’m very thankful for by the way, it does assign specific character traits in order to overcome certain objectives and a benefit in defeating certain enemy types.

The game also does a great job of mixing together different styles of gameplay without overshadowing or abandoning one over the other. Moving away from the core gameplay of wondering around in a mini sandbox like area, the game incorporates break-ups whereby you must assemble large scale pieces of Lego such as buildings or useable objects like construction vehicles. The game handles this in a way that’s more common to our own reality and experience with Lego, that bonds with that of the game. After collecting the correct pieces of Lego just for the sake of gameplay objectives, a blueprint diagram unfolds onto the screen where the player is required to select the correct pieces of Lego to be combined together as one full piece, and this is done under a timer.

"However as diverse and open to experimentation that the game is, there seems to be an obvious inconsistency regarding the amount of information being given to the player in regards to progression."

This makes sense in a way that engages both the character and the game, and this is primarily in the sections of the game where the main character takes on his role as a construction site worker, following orders and working under pressure. It’s a fantastic gameplay element that although it may not challenge your thinking assuming your of an older audience, still helps in keeping things fresh and making you more skillful as you progress throughout the game.

In addition to keeping things fresh and introducing new aspects of gameplay, there are also sections in the game where they incorporates elements of sequenced button presses more common to that of dancing games, where the correct button must meet on time with a specific beat of the song. On-rail vehicle sequences also make an appearance and as the player is required to switch between a multiple of characters this makes for some pretty interesting moments in gameplay, whereby timing and focus play a crucial role in meeting the game’s objectives. Since the game incorporates a local 2-player drop in and drop out option no adventure has to be taken alone if that’s what the player desires.

However as diverse and open to experimentation that the game is, there seems to be an obvious inconsistency regarding the amount of information being given to the player in regards to progression. During an earlier section of the game which took place after an important cut-scene taken directly the movie, I was returned to the game without my previous character and a new one at that with no instructions on where to go next. It wasn’t until I realized that game which didn’t give any indications by the way, worked on a hub like basis of replaying levels through entering different zones, required me to explore and work out for myself on how to press on with the game’s main story.

"Lego Movie VideoGame does a fair job of blending game and movie without largely compromising one medium over the other in favour of dominance, through the bad transference of two different mediums that most movie tie-in games seem to fall prey to."

Lego Movie VideoGame does a fair job of blending game and movie without largely compromising one medium over the other in favour of dominance, through the bad transference of two different mediums that most movie tie-in games seem to fall prey to. It does unfortunately fall out of place at times and although it’s not game breaking can be a little disappointing. Pulling clips directly from the movie isn’t a bad thing so long as it’s done right, but if the gameplay that follows immediately after that specific scene doesn’t seem to make any sense, not only does the game start to fall apart, so does the player’s experience of it.

Amongst the many choices and variances within the gameplay, figuring out certain gameplay objectives became somewhat of a minor frustration that caused me to rely on something a little more…shall we say unorthodox. This saving grace just happened to be my own inner child reaching out for the screen, that had now been overshadowed as well as overlooked by my own tendencies to over-think the puzzles and scenarios that most gamers are used to dealing with in more complex games.

The clue was all in the title, “Lego”. I found that the basic principle of what the game as well as the movie is based on was the key to some of my troubles. If you can’t figure out what to do with something then break it. Break everything and break it till you can’t break it no more then reassemble it into something brand new. After all isn’t that what Lego’s all about? Building things?

"The visual style of the game is met well with its use of audio and sound effects and the character's voice-overs present them as lively and cheerful people each with their own respectful personalities."

From a visual standpoint Lego the Movie Videogame stands up equally to the previous games of the series. Each figure and environmental object contains the same unique style of shine, gloss, and plastic, and this is complemented by its use of vibrant colours and lighting effects. Draw distance is passable for its mini sandbox-like nature, and the more linear and narrow areas of the game are reasonably acceptable for the style it’s going for. It has to be fully understood asvwell as accepted that this is a game based on a children’s toy, it’s Lego.

There’s only so much that can and actually needs to be done in terms of presenting a visual representation of Lego, that aside from pixel count and the amount of objects on-screen at once, are relatively easy to achieve. The Lego games as a whole has never been a series that one would go into expecting jaw-dropping graphics as opposed to the amount of fun and enjoyment that has to be met through its gameplay.

This is where the game shines the most, within its gameplay and with that being said Lego the Movie Videogame is one sharp looking piece of work. The visual style of the game is met well with its use of audio and sound effects and the character’s voice-overs present them as lively and cheerful people each with their own respectful personalities. It’s safe to say that no character in the game appears flat or lifeless, and there’s about as much life to them as there is gorgeous colours within the actual game.

"Time provides innovation for new ideas, features, and benefits, and my only fear with the Lego games is that if it keeps going the way it does it may soon run out of steam, and this was quite noticeable after playing the game."

The Lego Movie Videogame is clearly something we all saw coming from the moment the Lego Movie was announced. As entertaining as the game is and there’s a lot of fun to be had with it. The only question is will playing the game before seeing the movie ruin your experience? My answer to that would be only if you’re planning on seeing the movie. Personally, I would have preferred to have seen it first then relived my own yet similar experience of it in the game afterwards.

Regardless of the order taken the game is well worth the many hours it has to offer and is just as enjoyable as the past games. A more interesting subject that many have failed to notice to or even address in a serious way, is with the large number of Lego games we’ve been treated to over the last few years which are all great within their own rights, how will the series truly push itself with their next game? Assuming there’s one on the way.

The Lego franchise seems to be taking on a pattern of conquering every universe and well known source of fiction within movies, Videogames, and comic book culture. But with respects to the teams that actually come up with these ideas, there seems to be an overlooked topic that many of today’s games are suffering with, and that’s over-saturation.

Continuous releases of game sequels, spin-offs, and reboots don’t seem to be providing enough time for new ideas and dare I say this word without contributing to its overly-used tone without people really understanding it, “Innovation”. Time provides innovation for new ideas, features, and benefits, and my only fear with the Lego games is that if it keeps going the way it does it may soon run out of steam, and this was quite noticeable after playing the game.

Gameplay director Michael McIntyre fills us in on the knight's latest quest.

Batman: Arkham Origins, as its name indicates, will be going backward rather than forward after the cataclysmic events of Arkham City. While that may have seemed a bit odd at first, especially given that the developer has changed from Rocksteady Studios to Warner Brothers Montreal and that we’d be looking at how Batman ascended from being a simple vigilante to the Dark Knight, recent details have given us little to worry. This will be an Arkham title like any other and will actually work to expand on several elements of the previous games while introducing something new.

We recently had a chance to speak Michael McIntyre, gameplay director at WB Games Montreal, about everything from including new additions to the gameplay, skipping the next generation of consoles and how certain open world elements will affect your quest.

Ravi Sinha: Despite being released so close to the launch of next-generation consoles – and despite initial expectations – Arkham Origins won’t be on the PS4 or Xbox One. What was the motivation to keep it only for current-gen systems?

Michael McIntyre: Making the game for current-gen consoles was primarily about keeping the team focused and making the most of their expertise. Our team has extensive experience with current-gen systems, and dividing their focus between two generations of console was something that didn’t make sense to us. We were a new team and a new studio trying to make our mark on a beloved franchise and we wanted all our attention focused on making the game great as opposed to making it available on new platforms. That being said, the game will still be available on many platforms (PS3, Xbox 360, PCand Wii U) when it launches on October 25th.

Ravi Sinha: Continuing the departure from the sequels, Arkham Origins will feature a multiplayer mode. How difficult was it to develop the online component of the game, and find the right mix of elements for competitive play? Also, will the overall scale of the single-player experience be reduced (in comparison to Arkham City) to make room for the multiplayer?

Michael McIntyre: The challenges of making a multiplayer version of the Arkham experience was entirely taken on by Splash Damage, the studio that brought us Brink and Enemy Territory. They had a great idea for the multiplayer side of Batman: Arkham Origins from the start and that idea survived through all the challenges that making a new mode entails. In the end we now have a very unique multiplayer game that adds a whole new dimension to playing Batman: Arkham Origins.

"The opportunity that Batman’s early career offers for gameplay is focused on the types of challenges and activities Batman faces, rather than in the different abilities he may have. It was never our intention to have the player take on the role of an ineffective Batman."

We think it is a very exciting addition to the game that offers players a kind of experience they haven’t had before in an Arkham game. Having multiplayer developed by Splash Damage while single-player was developed here at WB Games Montreal made it possible to maxmize the scope of each mode without concern for taking focus from one or the other. We kept in touch through the development of both to keep the look and feel of the two modes cohesive but on the whole the two sides of the game were able to grow in their own directions.

Ravi Sinha: Story-wise, there’s plenty of motivation to go back and explore Batman’s roots in the Arkham video game universe. However, what motivation was there, gameplay-wise, given that players will be taking control of a less-experienced Batman, one with presumably more limited abilities than the one in Arkham Asylum/City?

Michael McIntyre: The opportunity that Batman’s early career offers for gameplay is focused on the types of challenges and activities Batman faces, rather than in the different abilities he may have. It was never our intention to have the player take on the role of an ineffective Batman.

What is more important and more fun is to take on the role of Batman before he started facing all these major villains- at this point in Batman’s career, he is facing common criminals. He is a mysterious vigilante who patrols the streets of Gotham at night fighting crime and corruption. Many of the new gameplay elements we brought to Batman: Arkham Origins were about creating challenges that resonate with this context.

We have a huge city to explore and to bring this city to life we created new gameplay for the player to engage with to make them feel like the guardian of Gotham. There are crimes in progress that will occur around the city as the player explores. There are crime scenes to solve as the World’s Greatest Detective with our new Case File System.

There are also many villains at large around the city which the player can pursue and apprehend for unique rewards. All of these elements come together to create a gameplay experience that resonates with the world of an early career Batman. Where Batman and the player get to see many of these major character’s in Batman’s career for the first time.

"Being a detective is a big part of being Batman. We wanted to expand the already great gameplay in this area to allow players to dig a little deeper. We wanted to create gameplay that would allow the player to feel like detectives themselves and try to figure things out."

Ravi Sinha: Will Origins set up the story for every Batman character, or will there be any additional DLC and story missions down the line? Conversely, can we expect another Origins game if this one is successful enough in order to make room for more characters?

Michael McIntyre: Almost every aspect of the story in Batman: Arkham Origins is about setting up the relationships that Batman has with many of the characters that play a huge role in his later career. The centrepiece for these encounters is of course the 8 assassins, who are hunting Batman for the bounty on his head, but another aspect that makes this era of Batman’s career so facinating are the relationships we see Batman develop with his allies such as Alfred and Gordon.

It was never our intention to have an origin for every single Batman character in our game, but instead to introduce characters that say something about Batman or Gotham at this time in Batman’s career. There are a lot of familiar faces that players will see as they play through the game and a few nice surprises as well.

Ravi Sinha: When including some elements in the game like the Batwing, is there ever a worry that it will conflict with the main storyline? For example, the Batwing wasn’t in Arkham City (for its own reasons) but now it’s in Arkham Origins. How do you balance new additions and elements in relation to their relevance down the line in latter games?

Michael McIntyre: We definitely do pay attention to conflicts like this in the game and try to resolve them in a way that preserves the story while keeping things fun and exciting. The Batwing actually was present in Arkham City – this was how Batman received new equipment in the field throughout the game. So the inclusion of that particular element is not really a conflict and we are excited to have it be a bigger presence in our game.

Ravi Sinha: The expanded crime scenes present a brand new gameplay element to the series. How did the team decide to focus on this aspect of play, and go about making it bigger and better than the sequels?

Michael McIntyre: Being a detective is a big part of being Batman. We wanted to expand the already great gameplay in this area to allow players to dig a little deeper. We wanted to create gameplay that would allow the player to feel like detectives themselves and try to figure things out. Developing this system required a lot of prototyping and going back to the drawing board but each iteration brought us closer to what we have in the game today, which is a very engaging challenge that provides a nice change of pace from the fast-paced action of the rest of the game.

We are very pleased with how our new Casefile system fits into our game and we think players will be as well. There are a few casefiles the player will need to solve as part of the main story and several more that occur throughout the city which the player can choose to solve or not. We feel these casefiles add a nice element of drama and mystery to Gotham City and give the player a chance to explore these elements while feeling like a high-tech detective.

"The Gotham city in Batman: Arkham Origins is more than double the size of Arkham City. This includes two major regions: North Gotham and South Gotham and the bridge connecting them. There is a lot of space to explore."

Ravi Sinha: Whereas Arkham City had a free-flowing emphasis to it activities, with the motivation being to gain more experience points and unlock advanced gadgets and abilities, Arkham Origins segregates those activities more finely into different categories. What prompted this kind of focus? Does it give more direction to how Batman would usually act, if he weren’t wrongly imprisoned in a city-wide prison, or does it go towards further establishing his character?

Michael McIntyre: The categorization of the various exploration activities in Arkham Origins creates a kind of narrative context for each type of gameplay so that exploration activity feels relevant to Batman and not just the player. This means that completing challenges or finding collectibles has meaning for Batman and justifies the rewards we have attached to each category. This makes all of the player’s activities feel like part of the story or at least part of being Batman.

Each category has progression within it as well which provides some structure to exploration and gives the player a variety of goals they can pursue. Having a ton of things to do at once can often be overwhelming. Our hope is that this structure will help make exploration manageable and rewarding while still feeling like an integral part of the game.

Ravi Sinha: Can you give us some examples as to how improving Batman’s standing with the GCPD helps in the gameplay? Also, will there be a wider variety of boss fights this time around?

Michael McIntyre: Batman’s standing with the GCPD is something that we primarily explore through the story in Origins.Where we will see a bigger change is in Batman’s relationship with Gordon himself. I do not want to spoil how this may affect gameplay, but the relationship between these two characters is, in my opinion, one of the more exciting things to see develop through the story.

We are very excited about the boss fights in our game. The premise of the night of assassins offers many opportunities for memorable face-offs between Batman and the major villains that have descended on Gotham City on this one night. We definitely feel we have a great variety since each fight is tailored to the character involved. Some are larger-than-life spectacles and others are more intimate and strange. All of them are designed to put the player’s core skills to the test. We think many of our boss fights will be some of the most intense and satisfying sequences in the game.

Rashid Sayed: How big is the world/map size compared to Batman Arkham City? And how long with the single player campaign last?

Michael McIntyre: The Gotham city in Batman: Arkham Origins is more than double the size of Arkham City. This includes two major regions: North Gotham and South Gotham and the bridge connecting them. There is a lot of space to explore. The length of the single player campaign will depend on each player’s play style but should meet the expectations of fans of the franchise.
