Lego Batman mixes nostalgia with modern game design, proving family friendly experiences can thrive on more than sheer ambition.

In an era of live service commitment, roguelike challenge, ultra-serious prestige action, and endlessly monetised, competitive multiplayer, there’s an overriding feeling that mainstream games are becoming overly-engineered. Designed, principally, to keep us hooked indefinitely.

So, whilst Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight harbours an open-world checklist of sorts – the kind to keep you ticking over between meaningful story beats – it’s also bringing something deceptively simple that many modern blockbusters overlook: joyful, chaotic, family friendly play.

TT Games’ Lego franchise has always harnessed the child-like imagination a mass of unsorted Lego bricks imposes; the skittering cascade of plastic clicks as your hand wades through a loose pile, eruditely distilled into gleeful gameplay. If there’s one area the series risks over-playing, it’s nostalgia, which might have given TT a headache during development as Legacy of the Dark Knight spans influence from every Batman era – from Adam West’s campy 1960s turn, through Tim Burton’s high-fantasy to Matt Reeves’ contemporary gothic-noir.

Yet, Lego Batman avoids overly-romanticising the past, instead spinning The Dark Knight’s many archetypes into a singular, self-contained experience that is then fleshed out by the series’ trademark irreverence and fondness for unexpected cross-cultural references. So, whilst you might have expected the menacing cartoonishness of Jack Nicholson’s Joker, there won’t be many who foresaw an American Psycho gag in a Lego game.

The game treats nostalgia like a pile of bricks. It’s not recreating the past, but recombining it.

But, that’s not to say Lego Batman allows nostalgia’s pitfalls to dilute its ambition. Whilst it appears structurally simple – like the loose bricks analogy we keep returning to – this isn’t a narrow, level-based romp but a fully realised take on Gotham City, complete with open-ended exploration, multi-layered mission design, and a surprising degree of mechanical variety. Combat, for starters, borrows liberally from the rhythmic flow and reactive weight of Batman’s Arkham series, while stealth, gadget use, and character switching introduce a measure of flexibility that goes beyond simple button-mashing.

On paper, it’s easy to write this off as “just another Lego game”. Indeed, many already did before its flood of positive critical reception. What we know now is this isn’t a familiar formula applied to a globally-recognised license, but a curated distillation of what makes Batman work in the first place, dismantled and reassembled into something broad, well-considered, yet still playfully messy. The crucial thing to understand here is Lego Batman’s playfulness doesn’t oppose its ambition, but expresses it in a way that’s universally appealing.

Contrast this to the many big-budget games that are, for better or worse, structured around retention. Is there anyone else, for instance, who agrees that Marathon would draw more players if the extraction shooter also included a one-and-done single player campaign? Whilst an entirely different experience, of course, Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight still offers something radical: it’s a game that simply asks to be played before moving on. You can stray through Gotham at your own pace, unlock extra characters, or collect optional WayneTech. There’s no obligation to keep up with anything beyond your own curiosity.

You’re loading the game up because you’re interested, then you’re doubling back for collectibles, and replaying missions with new abilities because it feels satisfying to do so. It’s a loop reminiscent of how most big-budget games used to be; complete experiences rather than eternal attention hoarders. You pick it up, shape your experience, then move on without the sense that something is occurring in your absence.

And then we have Lego Batman’s ability to portray The World’s Greatest Detective in a language shared by all ages. See, movie-going Batman is often exclusively dark, traumatic, and intense, whereas Legacy of the Dark Knight reintroduces theatrical absurdity. Even the most elegiac scenarios, like Bruce’s brutal Himalayan training at the hands of Ra’s al Ghul’s League of Shadows in Batman Begins is treated lightheartedly by TT Games. Adults will recognise the source material, while kids see colours, explosions, and chaotic stimuli. Both are valid experiences. The juvenile mindset enjoys smashing that pile of loose bricks, scattering them across the floor, while grown-ups envision building houses, bridges, and maybe even grander structures like citadels and cathedrals.

This is where the Lego series is uniquely placed to reach a wide audience without dumbing down the experience. Yes, younger players might be discovering Batman for the first time, the older generation might have grown up with Lego, casuals might want easy-to-learn systems, while completionists will be exploring every hidden collectible. Add to this Lego Batman’s suite of accessibility presets – from vision, motion, and motor function modifiers, to difficulty sliders, event skipping, and, perhaps the most crucial for any parents playing with their kids, the option to retain studs after defeat – then the possibilities become the sheer opposite of shallow. Accessibility, here, is how the game truly functions as a communal experience.

There is, however, mechanical nostalgia that younger players might not pick up on. Lego Batman’s combat echoes Rocksteady’s Arkham series precisely, not just to invoke its fluidity, punch, and potential, but as another finely-tuned, rose-tinted drip feed. Furthermore, it connects the game to a lineage of strong, single-player games while reassuring experienced players that there’s still plenty of meat to chew on. The idea Lego Batman suggests is that publishers shouldn’t underestimate the gravitas of single-player, as broadly speaking, superhero licenses, shared experiences, and big IP adaptations – IO Interactive’s upcoming 007 origin story notwithstanding – generally focus toward online ecosystems. Legacy of the Dark Knight’s reception shows that, instead, there’s appetite for generous, content-rich, self-contained single-player narratives.

There’s also something specifically important about how the game approaches shared play, where the borders created by separate screens, spaces, or even entire countries are eroded, turning Gotham into a city that can be navigated, disrupted, and laughed through side by side.

As anyone who’s completed one of a growing number of same-screen co-operative games will tell you, playing Split Fiction or Overcooked together on the couch changes a game’s rhythm. Progress becomes conversational, improvised, sometimes casually argumentative. It’s human interaction through digital collaboration, and it’s something which the Lego series has been a torchbearer for generations.

In a way, it mirrors the physical act of building freeform with Lego itself. Pieces are passed back and forth, ideas overlap, and structures take shape through collaborative input. Lego Batman’s digital experience captures the same tactile possibility, where on-screen movement, exploration, and combat becomes the allegorical product of two players working in sync.

Now, it’s tempting to label this as mere iteration. Another pass, it seems, at a roadworn formula. But Legacy of the Dark Knight shows that the Lego formula isn’t an issue. Like a box of bricks, its value lies in how it’s used. With a stronger identity, better systemic cohesion, and a clear understanding of what makes Batman compelling – areas that, admittedly, the Lego series has struggled with over the years – then the loose bricks feel newly purposeful.

And maybe this is the wider lesson licensed games can take away, that they don’t need to chase scale to find an audience. If they understand the fantasy running through its core – the gadgets, the villains, the vast showroom of Batmobiles, in Batman’s case – then the rest can be built around it. Lego Batman, then, succeeds precisely because it doesn’t reinvent his enigma, but reassembles the composite parts intently, brick-by-brick.

Nintendo players can finally don the cowl as pre-orders go live for TT Games' acclaimed open-world action-adventure title.

Warner Bros Games and TT Games have announced that LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will launch on September 18th for Nintendo Switch 2. Which would be great news if it weren’t for all the other titles hogging the same release window, but I digress. Check out the first gameplay below.

Pre-orders are live now on the Nintendo eShop, with the Standard Edition costing $69.99 and the Deluxe Edition retailing for $89.99. As with other platforms, purchasing the latter entitles you to three days of early access and various DLC packs, including the Mayhem Collection.

Speaking of which, it launches on the same day, offering a new story mission starring The Joker and Harley Quinn where they escape from Arkham Asylum. You also get to rampage through Gotham City in Mayhem Mode. There’s also the Sinister Pack, and based on datamining, it may see players controlling several Task Force X characters.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is currently available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. You can check out our review here – we gave it a nine out of ten, praising the combat, visuals, and open world. Whether it fills the gap left by Rocksteady’s Batman Arkham series will vary from person to person, but it’s an incredible tribute to the Caped Crusader.

It’s not every day you hear someone cite humor as a highlight in a Batman game, but TT Games has surpassed all kinds of expectations.

You probably already know that we loved LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight if you caught our review. You might have even read about how we think it proves WB Games did the Bat-verse wrong, but we’re not the only ones with praise. A new accolades trailer shows off what critics have been saying, and much of it praises the open world and presentation, not to mention the feeling of being Batman in a story that features nods to many favorite moments over the years.

That’s all because it’s a title that feels very close to Rocksteady’s Arkham franchise, which continues to remain a benchmark for Batman games, all while injecting some humor into Gotham’s usually dreary streets. The stealth, Free Flow combat, and sheer amount of references are all there and are very welcome. The open world, with its activities and secrets, has also proven fun to sink dozens of hours into.

If you’ve been on the fence about this one, the trailer below is probably going to nudge you towards a decision one way or another. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, with the Nintendo Switch 2 version coming at some point. Of course, TT Games also has additional content, including The Joker and Harley Quinn as playable characters in the new Mayhem Mode.

This guide for LEGO Batman 4: Legacy of The Dark Knight is all about amassing lots of Studs quickly and with as little effort as possible.

Get The Stud Cache

In the Extras tab of the Options menu, scroll down to The LEGO Group Online Survey. This will launch the official LEGO online website with a short survey to complete.

Once done, snag the redemption code and return to the Main Menu to select ‘Redeem Code’. Drop the code in and immediately unlock the Stud Cache and a brightly-colored bonus Bouncy Castle to place in the Bat Cave.

Get The Stud Upgrades

Hyper Combo

Maximize the level of the Stud combo multiplier to 3x first, and then 4x eventually.

Speedy Stud Combo

Maximize the build-up speed of the Stud combo meter.

Stud Combo Duration

Maximize the duration of the Stud combo meter.

Stud Magnet

While exploring, this upgrade will let you vacuum up Studs from farther away.

Stealthy Studs

This upgrade grants you bonus opportunities to collect Studs, specifically when performing stealth takedowns which then boosts to the Stud combo meter.

Grind The Rollercoaster

Simply riding the rollercoaster at the Amusement Mile on North Island’s East End, without any interaction whatsoever can net you a minimum of 10K in Studs for a ride that is just over half a minute long. With all upgrades the Studs you collect per run can run as high as 19K once the maximum multiplier kicks in by the start of your second run.

Be sure to keep that multiplier running at maximum between runs using any available breakables as you scramble to get back on the ride.

Those are all the best tips for farming Studs fast in LEGO Batman 4: Legacy of The Dark Knight.

Contrary to what the company has pursued for so long, it is indeed possible to deliver a fun and compelling single-player Batman title.

Don’t you just love it when a plan comes together? Of course, you didn’t need contingency upon contingency like the Caped Crusader himself to know that LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight would review so well. A strong 84 Metascore at present based on 56 critical reviews; one million wishlists on Steam alone; and despite currently being in early access for Deluxe Edition owners, it’s already garnered a 93 percent “Very Positive” rating on the platform, even if there are only 302 user reviews at present.

Even before all of this, its success seemed a given from minute one of the reveal. A brand new LEGO Batman title, one that drew upon the vast array of stories that the World’s Greatest Detective has been a part of. The Nolan-verse movies – recreating iconic scenes in a sometimes juvenile but ultimately charming fashion. The Gotham art museum scene, complete with Prince’s classic “Partyman”, the movements of the Joker and his gang adapted in a more LEGO-appropriate venture. The sheer array of Batsuits and Batmobiles draws from a rich history both legendary and obscure. A rogue’s gallery of every foe that’s ever contributed to the Bat’s sleepless nights.

And that’s without getting into the gorgeous art direction and fidelity, which thankfully doesn’t sacrifice performance on PC – or the depth of the character roster, favoring quality over the quantity of previous LEGO titles, or even the open world of Gotham City, with its vast swathe of iconic locations and plentiful activities. That the biggest complaint against the entire experience is that it’s on the easy side (which is what Dark Knight mode is for) and lacks online co-op really says it all.

But as much as LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight inspires joy, it also brought back memories of vitriol for me. No, not of past entries, or all the terrible entries that starred the big bad Bat (which have themselves become iconic, for better or worse). Rather, it was the simple revelation that two other studios besides TT Games had worked on the title.

Ever since the reveal of its combat, everyone had the same reaction: “This looks pretty Batman Arkham-esque.” No effort was made to dispute this because, lo and behold, Free Flow combat was back in almost all its glory. As it turns out, Rocksteady may have had a hand in implementing this because it’s credited as a co-director, with about 24 team members – including senior programmers, artists, a producer, and a designer. And if that wasn’t enough, WB Games Montreal also helped.

So there you have it. Two studios, best known for their respective works on the Batman: Arkham franchise. One delivering an unforgettable trilogy that still ranks among gaming’s best. The other delivers an underappreciated (at least by its parent company) prequel that still rocks some of the better boss battles in the series, sans tank combat. Both working on a single-player, open-world Batman game that one could consider “Arkham-lite” if they really wanted to split hairs.

And after how long? Oh, just almost a decade since the launch of Batman: Arkham Knight, and almost 13 years since the launch of Batman: Arkham Origins. Why, I ask? Not of TT Games or either developer, but rather of Warner Bros. Games.

Because LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight proves what every fan of the series and Batman in general has been saying, calmly and outright screaming, for years now: That you can make a very good, single-player Arkham-style game, and it will do well. Why did WB Games and, by extension, Warner Bros. Discovery, take every single other annoyingly awful route instead?

Obviously, live-service trend chasing, hence remembering my utter vitriol for the hours-long trainwreck that was Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League – one of the only games I’ve ever played where annoyance quickly turned to jaded apathy and stayed like that, even when it was announced almost a year later that the Justice League you killed were just clones. Spoilers, by the way, for all twelve of you who could possibly care.

Not that Gotham Knights gets a pass. I don’t have enough fingers or toes to count the sheer amount of things it did wrong, be it in the treatment of the Court of Owls, Bruce Wayne, and not one, two, or three but four iconic Bat Family members, or the more action RPG-focused combat, or the traversal in general, which relied on fixed points to grapple and jump to. All for the sake of some co-op live-service model that ultimately never came to pass, resulting in this messy amalgam.

In both cases, however, the blame is squarely at the feet of WB Games. Sure, you could argue that it wanted the really big money that live-service had to offer (and whatever it was hoping Gotham Knights would accomplish). Instead, it ended up with record losses. Both studios faced extensive layoffs, though given everything that occurred with Warner Bros. Discovery and its sale, it’s safe to say that the head honchos had bigger fish to fry.

Now, you could argue that Legacy of the Dark Knight would have been a success without the involvement of Rocksteady or WB Games Montreal, but that just further proves my point. We didn’t need to indulge in the unfunny adventures of the Wallers’ discount mercenaries or the antics of the fumbling four. Batman, in all his glory – focused, in a single-player effort – would have been enough. Besides, it’s not LEGO Batman itself that is a fundamentally hot property – the last entry released in 2014 remains the lowest-rated (while still averaging a decent 74 Metascore). And despite the success of The Lego Batman Movie, its sequel was cancelled following the underwhelming The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.

The real kicker to all of this? Rumors of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight’s development began as early as January 2023. TT Games was reportedly in flux following reports of extensive crunch on LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Besides cancelling projects, it was also working on DLC for the title while simultaneously developing the next LEGO Batman.

Hardly an ideal development situation, but within three years or so, and with some help, it delivered a new Batman title. Meanwhile, Gotham Knights reportedly began development after the rumored Batman title starring Damian Wayne, which was apparently cancelled around early 2018. Suicide Squad reportedly began work in 2016, following the cancellation of an earlier iteration that Montreal was supposed to deliver.

Over six and almost nine years, respectively, with the result being a forgotten, janky action RPG and a dead live service game. Bravo, WB.

Far be it from me to praise the monetization of Legacy of the Dark Knight, though you are getting a pretty healthy amount of additional content for $20 extra, or to hold TT Games up as the new gold standard of development. But if the latest LEGO Batman should prove anything – beyond the fact that a single-player Batman title can and will succeed with critics and fans – it’s that WB Games has been wrong for over a decade, and wasted some of the very best talent to deliver absolute dreck.

Here’s hoping that it motivates Rocksteady for its next Batman title. The night is darkest before the dawn, but one can only hope that it doesn’t stretch on for years and years.

Master Gotham fast with 15 essential Legacy of the Dark Knight tips covering early-game tricks.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is a densely packed game, with its open world Gotham and fantastic campaign brimming with things to do, secrets to track down, collectibles to find, and much more. As you prepare to divebomb into its offerings, here, we’ve compiled a few beginners tips and tricks for you to keep in mind as you start your journey in Gotham City. Without further ado, then, let’s jump right in.

GADGETS AND COMBAT

Legacy of the Dark Knight employs a new combat system for the LEGO Batman series, taking heavy cues from the Arkham series instead, which means that using your gadgets smartly during combat is just as important as the brawling aspects. From using your Batarangs to stun foes to yanking them towards you from a distance with the Batclaw, gadgets can come in handy during fights in a variety of ways, especially when it comes to dealing with different enemy types.

PERFECT COUNTER

Countering incoming enemy blows is a crucial part of Legacy of the Dark Knight’s moment to moment combat, much like the Arkham games, and as you would expect, there are ways to make it an even stronger tool. You will, for instance, want to unlock the perfect counter ability as soon as you can. It does exactly what its name suggest, allowing you to deal boosted damage to enemies if you counter moves with the exact perfect timing.

CONCUSSIVE BATARANG

Another upgrade that you’ll want to prioritize – and that happens to be available pretty early on, as luck would have it – is the concussive Batarang. These special Batarangs stick to the foes that you fire them at, before exploding in a concussive blast that damages the enemies and anyone and anything around them. These are quite useful in both stealth and combat, so make sure to unlock them when you get the chance.

FOCUS SLAM

Focus Slam is another useful upgrade that you should keep an eye on, given how useful it can be in combat. With it, you can use the Batclaw to swing enemies around in a giant arc before smashing them into the ground. As you can imagine, this deals plenty of damage, and is also effective for crowd control.

DISTRACT

Legacy of the Dark Knight allows players to unlock a variety of different abilities and upgrades across various different playable characters, and one in particular that is quite useful is Catwoman’s Distract ability. It lets you summon cats to distract foes so that you can sneak around them or deal with them as you see fit. As you might imagine, it’s a great ability to have up your sleeve for stealth scenarios.

GOOP TRAIL

Commissioner Gordon is another one of Legacy of the Dark Knight’s several playable characters, and yes, he, too, comes equipped with unique tools and abilities. For his foam spraying gun, for instance, you can unlock the goop trail ability, which allows you to leave sticky traps all over the ground, which can be quite handy in tricky combat situations- especially when you’re faced with large crowds.

SCANNING

Legacy of the Dark Knight features a scanning mechanic, unsurprisingly- this is a Batman game, after all. And as you’d expect, the scanning ability is one that is frequently useful. Not only does it let you see and mark nearby enemies for when you’re in a stealthy mood, it also pings nearby objects and elements of interest. When you find yourself in a new environment, then, make sure to hit the scan button.

WAYNETECH CHIPS

Scattered throughout Gotham City and the many levels it holds, you’ll find WayneTech Chips- or you’ll want to, at least, because these are how you upgrade your gadgets. So should you run into WayneTech Chips locked behind puzzles or combat challenges, make sure you don’t ignore them.

MINIKITS

As you would expect, there are several minikits to be found across the entirety of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. Each level features an exclusive one, with five different pieces hidden and tucked away for players to find. Each full minikit set you find then makes its way to the Batcave as a trophy for you to look at and admire. While they may not provide any gameplay benefits, they serve as one of several kinds of collectibles, so if you are a completionist, you are going to want to keep an eye out.

RIDDLER TROPHIES

Given how strongly Legacy of the Dark Knight is inspired by Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham games, it comes as no surprise that it features Riddler trophies as one of its many different kinds of collectibles. These are scattered throughout Gotham City and usually locked behind different puzzles, as you might imagine. Though there’s obviously not nearly as many of them as there were in the Arkham titles, there’s a good few for players to track down- and they’re usually fun, so they definitely come recommended.

MORE COLLECTIBLES

TT Games’ LEGO titles have always prided themselves on their bevy of collectibles and unlockables, and Legacy of the Dark Knight doesn’t disappoint in this department either. In addition to the aforementioned WayneTech Chips, Riddler trophies, and minikits, there’s plenty more to be tracked down, including red bricks, over 100 suits, and much more- so there’s plenty of reason to keep exploring and to replay levels.

BATCAVE

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight allows players to explore Bruce’s Batcave, and yes, it is every bit as awesome as you would expect. What’s more, the game also allows you to personalize and expand your underground HQ. In addition to the aforementioned minikit trophies, you can customize the Batcave with furniture and decorations or even multiple expansions, all of which are purchased with studs- so, you know, stock up on those studs.

BUILDING VEHICLES

Of course, Batcave upgrades aren’t the only reason that you’re going to want to stock up on studs. For instance, studs are also how you build new vehicles. There’s a variety of different Batmobile and Batcycle variants to be built, while you can also use Red Powerbricks to apply cosmetic customizations to those vehicles.

UNLOCKING SUITS

As mentioned, there’s over 100 different suits to be unlocked across Legacy of the Dark Knight’s roster of playable characters. Some, of course, are unlocked as you progress through main missions, but there’s other ways to add to your growing closet as well, including stores where you can purchase new suits, or activities that you can complete around the open world to unlock more. Meanwhile, similar to vehicles, you can also unlock Red Powerbricks to get your hands on new variants for the suits you already own.

DIFFICULTY

Legacy of the Dark Knight is a LEGO game, of course, which means TT Games, as always, has crafted a game that appeals to all ages- which in turn means that it isn’t the most challenging game, to say the least. And while that doesn’t get in the way of how fun it is in the slightest, there will be many out there who might want the game to present a bit more of a challenge- especially given its Arkham-inspired combat and stealth mechanics. If you’re in that group, we would suggest cranking the difficulty up to Dark Knight mode, which definitely makes the game a more skill-driven experience. You obviously still shouldn’t go in expecting a challenging experience, but it definitely puts up more of a fight.
