Heartbreak City has got work to do if it aims to improve its predecessor’s slightly shaky foundations, but so far, it looks pretty good.

Former Criterion co-founder Fiona Sperry has come forward with Wreckreation 2, a follow-up to last year’s arcade racer that was quite fun to play but came with its own troubles. However, she seems confident that the upcoming title is one every fan of the genre will be very entertained by. Check out the first trailer below, courtesy of IGN.

That confidence stems from an approach that’s “built with players, and not just for them,” according to Sperry’s press release announcing the open-world racer (which comes from a new studio comprised of former Three Fields Entertainment developers). Its overview on Steam points to a lot of returning mechanics and a familiar gameplay loop, which might suggest Wreckreation 2 is going to be an iterative improvement, but that’s hardly the case.

The first game was quite fun, and the concept of bringing in players’ designed tracks into a sandbox was definitely ambitious, but was marred by performance and balancing issues that we pointed out in our review. We’re hoping that all those problems will be in the past when this one hits the shelves, although when that’s slated to happen remains a mystery.

Wreckreation 2 is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It takes place in Heartbreak City, which offers races, Pursuits and activities like Road Rage and Marked Man.
