Outlandish gameplay is nothing new but these games went above and beyond with their features.

For every triple-A title that promises cutting-edge graphics and action-packed set-pieces, there are games that have functioned a bit…differently. It’s not they deviate too far from the norm but there are those few gameplay features that are so strange and at times, so absurd, that you wonder how they were greenlit. Some worked and others didn’t – let’s go over 15 such games here.

Fortnite: Battle Royale

Epic Games’ Fortnite may have seemed like a cartoonish zombie defense game but Fortnite: Battle Royale is another pot of Battle Royale insanity altogether. Rocket riding – which saw players fire rockets and surf on them to rain death from above – was only the beginning. From there, the game incorporated guided missiles, shopping carts as pseudo-vehicles, a game mode that lets players become Thanos with the Infinity Gauntlet and so much more.

Okay, then.

Wii Fit was one of the breakthrough successes of last generation, a game that was not quite a game, a game that retailed for nearly twice the price of a regular game (because of the included accessory) and went to outsell basically every other title released last generation that did not have ‘Wii’ in its name. It was a fitness game, that started off the current mania around the genre; and although its actual capacity to help someone lose weight has often been called into question, NeoGAF user Yondy604 will vouch for the effectiveness of its regimen.

No, seriously- apparently the guy, completely into video games, wanted to lose weight. So naturally, he took to Wii Fit, and led him to lose a full 100 pounds.

“It maybe saved my life,” he wrote. “I lost a total of roughly 90/100ish pounds using it, mostly from the addicting mini games it had.” Yondy had been suffering from heartburn and acid reflux, and he went down from over 350 pounds to around 240 pounds.

He claims that the only reason he was into the Wii Fit regime, where ordinary exercise regimes would have had him lose interest long ago, was because the games were so addictive and fun; as far he was concerned, he was just playing, not exercising.

“I really hope the Wii U comes out with something similar, because it was a fantastic product, and deserves a little bit of praise,” he wrote.

The Wii U is getting something similar- Wii Fit U, the Wii U edition of the fitness game which features expanded regimes thanks to the full range of inputs the Wii U allows, launches sometime in 2013.

As Reggie proclaimed the readiness of his body back in 2007, he launched off what would become one of Nintendo’s highest selling series of all time. Unfortunately, this series is not a Kirby or a Metroid or a Star Fox, but it is Wii Fit, which, in two installments, has sold almost double what Super Smash Bros.

High sales of Wii Fit were also accompanied by high sales of the Wii Balance Board. Nintendo confirmed that all of this meant that a third Wii Fit game, Wii Fit U would launch on the Wii U, with more social features, newer workouts, and support for the Wii U controller.

Check out the trailer for Wii Fit U!!!
