Being tossed into a pressure cooker right from pressing start is sure to get the player's attention, here's 15 of the best examples

Stories take stakes and conflict, otherwise it’s not really a story. For an interactive medium like games, not only do they need to tell a story, but they have maybe that first mission to catch the attention of the players and convince them that this is going to be a ride worth sticking around for. These are 15 games that stuck you in the hot seat right from the word go, and made sure they had you. Maybe with an explosion or two for good measure.

Gears of War 4

Gears of War 4 was the set up for a new generation of COG, but before we could get to what was to come, we needed to look back at some of the harshest battles humanity had endured before, throwing the green player right into some of the bloodiest battles of the series, including Emergence Day, the Pendulum Wars and the final defence of humanity taking place during the final battle of Gears of War 3. Welcome to Gears, solider.

15 games with some seriously twisted difficulty modes, only for the best.

When us really hardcore gamers want to feel some real pride and accomplishment, we like to crank up that difficulty and let our skills really shine through against the best of what the developer can put in our path. But there are some challenges that just shouldn’t be conquered, and the attempt alone seems silly sometimes. These 15 titles really made us lose our minds in frustration trying to conquer them.

Mein Leben! – Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus

Wolfenstein II rocked the shooter landscape by being a tight, narrative focused game where they wanted you to make America nazi free again and showing that shooters can have a place without a tacked on multiplayer. Wolfenstein II already makes you work for it, but if you want to finish that achievement list you need to take on the controller shatteringly frustrating “Mein Leben!” mode. Translating to “My life!”, as it says the player has a single life to complete the entire game, no save scumming allowed and the enemies are capable of goose-stepping all over the otherwise hardy “Terror Billy”.

Why aren't these mechanics in more things! These are 15 great mechanics that haven't been cloned to death...yet.

The building blocks upon which all of the best games are built, the mechanics are how we interact with and experience the world of a game. From the mundane like the now universal “Batman” free flow combat to the truly unique, the best games continue to surprise us with fresh ideas that turn games on their head completely. But there are many really great ones that for whatever reason, the larger industry hasn’t seemed to latch onto, at least yet. Won’t you join us as we ask out loud about a few of those mechanics?

Magical Scissors – Puppeteer

The charm of the PS3 platform game that time forgot, Puppeteer, is all in the presentation. Set up like an elaborate puppet show, the interaction with this charming setup comes from your magical scissors, the Calibrus, and how it can cut through the fabric scenery in delightful and charming ways to continue progression. It takes the craft aesthetic further than its closest competition in games like Tearaway or Yoshi’s Wooly World can hope to match.
