As a remake of 1989’s Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon’s Trap, it features new hand-drawn visuals and rearranged music. It sees the protagonist on a journey to cure a curse, which involves defeating many dragons. New forms can be obtained over time, each with its abilities. Piranha-Man, for example, allows for swimming underwater while Hawk-Man can fly.

The remake features several quality-of-life improvements like not needing charm stones to purchase new equipment and weapon toggle being instant. It also features more difficulty settings, filters, bonus areas, the option to toggle between the classic and modern styles, and much more. Along with PC, Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is also available for iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and Amazon Luna.

Lizardcube has announced that its action adventure platformer Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap will be coming to iOS and Android. Published by Playdigious, it will retail for $8.99 and release on May 30th. Check out the announcement trailer below.

With gorgeous hand-drawn visuals and an excellent score, Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is a remake of the 1989 title Wonder Boy 3. It features the shape-shifting Hu-Man battling dragons to lift a curse. Originally able to turn into a lizard, players will eventually be able to assume other forms to bypass obstacles.

Along with Lizard-Man, Mouse-Man and so on, Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap will also include other playable characters like Hu-Girl. Even cooler is the fact that players can change between the new crisp visuals and old-school 8-bit presentation on the fly. Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is also available for PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

It’s no secret that the Nintendo Switch is currently a gold mine for independent developers. Several indie studios have reported higher sales on the hybrid console compared to all others and LizardCube’s Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap, published by DotEmu, is a great example.

Speaking to Game Two (skip to 16:10 below and turn on Auto-Translate for English subtitles), DotEmu CEO Cyrille Imbert said that Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap sold 100,000 copies on the Switch thus far. That’s more than all other platforms combined and Imbert noted that, “I play my Switch every day, I don’t see our future games not being on that console.”

You could argue that Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap released on the Switch after the PC, Xbox One and PS4 versions. However, it actually launched in April 2017 alongside the console versions. The fact that it’s doing so much better on Nintendo’s platform should confirm how significant this indie boom period is.
