For those who will curse Modern Warfare forever for taking Call of Duty away from the World War backdrop (if such people exist), we have bad news for you. Treyarch’s World at War, the fifth entry into the Call of Duty series, was the last Call of Duty game to be set in the backdrop of the World War II.

Treyarch’s Josh Olin recently said in an interview, “For us, I don’t think we would go back because we’ve done a lot of World War II.”

m not saying that the genre’s done. It would be important that, if there ever were to be another game set in the World War II era, it would have to be something that’s fresh and new.”

With World at War, they tried to look at the World War II backdrop from a different perspective, with the Japanese as our enemies, and an entirely new location for the game. “It was a different game to the other World War II shooters in the franchise. So, as long as there’s new experiences people will still play them,” said Olin.

On Black Ops, he said: “It is sort of refreshing to be in this new locale where we have all these new toys that we can play with. We’ve been making World War II shooters for a long time.”

8 and a half million WaW map packs have been sold since launch, spread over 3 individual map packs.

In related news, Infinity Ward are soon to bring out the first DLC for Modern Warfare 2, which this editor suggests will become the biggest selling DLC in history. We don’t have an exact date for release yet, but it is due out in spring.
