The upgrade to current-gen consoles brings with it Horde Mode XL, with over a thousand zombies in a wave, to World War Z: Aftermath.

Developer Saber Interactive has announced that World War Z: Aftermath will be making the jump to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on January 24. Those who already own the game on PS4 or Xbox One will get a free upgrade to the newer versions of the game.

As part of the upgrade to current-gen consoles, World War Z: Aftermath on consoles will also be getting Horde Mode XL. Essentially the same as the standard Horde Mode in the game, Horde Mode XL adds a twist with zombie waves featuring over a thousand zombies to fight back.

The update also brings with it mutators to the Horde Mode with new mutators, as well as new weapons and a revamped progression system for the game’s various weapons.

Inspired by the World War Z movie, World War Z: Aftermath is a co-op shooter that takes players through various locations throughout the world during a zombie apocalypse. Along the way, players will also have to fight back against special zombies.

World War Z and Superhot also come to the streaming service.

Another month has turned over, meaning that it’s time for the various services to bring a fresh slate of games. One of those is, of course, PlayStation Now, Sony’s original streaming service. This week its filled with superpowers, jets and zombies.

As announced via the official PlayStation blog, the headliners for the month are no doubt Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, the latest entry in Bandai Namco’s aerial combat series, and the InFamous: Second Son, the last entry in Sucker Punch’s superpower-infused open world series. On top of that you also get a lot of multiplayer action with World War Z where you and a group tackle hordes of zombies, and the unique shooter, puzzler combo called Superhot that tasks you to figure out the best way to tackle rooms of enemies as time moves alongside you.

All those games will be playable starting on March 2nd via PlayStation Now, which you use via PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC.

The releases also come alongside new PvE content.

Left 4 Dead left a void in many people’s lives. The co-op shooter had you navigate a seemingly impossible amount of zombies in massive hordes. Well, as it often goes, something came to fill that void in World War Z. The game, based loosely on the novel of the same name, found huge success by filling our hearts with its ridiculous hordes of the undead, and now it gets even more life, even some that will be on the go.

Talking to IGN, developer Saber Interactive announced the current versions of the game will get a GOTY re-release. It will have the full game and all of the DLC released thus far, as well as new content such as weapons, character skins and a new three-mission PvE episode set in the French city of Marseille. Presumably, those who own the current release will be able to purchase this content, but it’s not clarified at this time.

Secondly, the company also confirms that a Switch version of the game is in development. Saber CEO Matt Karch said that getting the port to run is “the hardest thing that we have had to do,” which is saying a lot when you remember these are they same people who ported The Witcher 3 to Nintendo’s hybrid. Unforutnately, no time frame or footage was given for this release.

World War Z: GOTY Edition will release on May 5th for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (via the Epic Games Store). The Switch version will come at a later date.

Get ready to jump back into the fray with new features.

People really love mowing down zombies it turns out, as World War Z has been quite the success. It’s sold well above expectations, and is a pretty fun game to boot, taking up the space that Left 4 Dead once filled very nicely. Now more free and paid content is coming soon, and we have a trailer today breaking it all down.

Today, Saber Interactive accidentally released the video for the update a little early, but the internet never forgets and you can see it reuploaded via another channel below. The update will include a free new difficulty mode, six skulls extreme mode, to every chapter released so far, that the team promises it is no joke. Beating one chapter in this mode will net you a special melee weapon, and beating all chapters will get you a high powered sniper rifle.

The video also highlights the paid and free weapon and character skins the game will have over the course of July and August. But there is a also a free batch of skins that’s coming at a later date that the team is calling simply, “the big update.” If that wasn’t enough, there’s also a weekly challenge mode coming as well.

World War Z is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The next update that include the six skulls difficulty will be live sometime later this month.

The controversial storefront is the game's "top digital platform."

The Epic Games Store remains a topic of controversy in the PC gaming community. But while there are scores of people who’ve been swearing off purchasing titles that pledge their exclusivity to the storefront, it seems like that isn’t having much of an actual impact on sales- or so it is in the case of one game, at least.

Recently, Matthew Karch, CEO of World War Z‘s developer Saber Interactive, spoke with PCGamesN, and revealed that of the over 2 million copies the game has sold so far, nearly 700,000 sales have come from the Epic Games Store. It is, in fact, the game’s “top digital platform.” This very much seems to be in line with how the game’s sales started out upon launch.

“We always believed the game would find a good following on PC eventually,” said Karch. “The surprise was just how quickly it happened, and how important Epic’s platform was in getting us there.”

In fact, Karch doesn’t see much sense in the backlash against the Epic Games Store at all, and hopes it’ll eventually go away. ““We don’t see backlash when console manufacturers create games that are just for their hardware, and buying a system for a game is obviously a much more onerous requirement,” he said. “My hope is that once there is feature parity on the PC platforms, we won’t hear as much complaining.”

World War Z is doing so well on the Epic Games Store, in fact, that as per Karch, it is performing “way above expectations” thanks to its sales on the storefront. “On the PC specifically, we are performing way above expectations thanks to the support we have received from the Epic Games Store,” he said.

World War Z is currently available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It recently received new DLC, adding a Tokyo mission to the game.

The first major content update for Saber Interactive’s zombie co-op shooter World War Z is now live. The name “Undead Sea” isn’t just for show – it actually denotes the new Tokyo mission that takes place on a zombie-filled ferry. A new special zombie is also on the loose that can spit toxins. It even resurrects if not killed properly.

The new zombie will spawn on all levels, so expect new challenges when revisiting previous missions. Other new features include sliders for field of view and animation quality, along with support for private lobbies. The development team also confirmed that the six-skull difficulty setting, Weekly Challenge mode, Survival Mode, and class switching in PvPvZ matches will be arriving next as part of its roadmap.

Which new feature will come first remains to be seen. Check out some of the patch notes for Undead Sea below. It should be noted that hosting a game locally in private lobbies is only available on Xbox One and PS4. PC players should expect the same feature “later”.

Patch Notes

New Content:

Added Tokyo 3 level.

Added new special zombie that will spawn on all levels.

New Features

Added private lobbies.

Added ability to host the game locally in private lobbies. (Only on Xbox and PS4 at the moment, same functionality will be available on PC later)

Added ability to disable bots in private lobbies.

Added UI that shows maximum difficulty each level was completed on.

Added FoV scale slider.

Added option to change PvP loadout during the game.

AI

Added feature that will prevent Lurker from spawning near players that are joining the game in progress.

Tripled delay, which governs how often Lurker can spawn in the exact same position.

Constant sprinting will now aggro zombies from a bigger distance.
Reworked “zombie stagger” mechanics. When hit, zombies used to play a long hit animation based on gun caliber and an element of randomness. Now they will play hit animations based on gun caliber and if they are hit repeatedly in a short period. This will make shotguns and fast firing weapons more consistent at staggering zombies.

AI Director will spawn less primary weapons if players are already carrying tier 3 weapons.

When AI Director decides to spawn a small wave of zombies, it will contain more zombies, but the wave duration will be shorter.
Made stealth more consistent across all levels; executing perfect stealth will delay the first wave of non-swarm zombies.
Increased chance of spawning special zombies in idle state.

After some anticipation, the first free DLC for Saber Interactive’s World War Z is finally out on June 3rd. Along with including a new mission set in Tokyo, the DLC will contain a field of view slider, support for private lobbies, and a new “special” zombie (teased in the tweet below). Other changes and features will become clearer when the DLC is live.

According to the developer’s roadmap for May to July, the next feature will be an Extreme difficulty one, which has a six Skull rating. We can also expect a weekly challenge mode and new weapons, along with new skins and accessories down the line. Given how the Tokyo mission was supposed to release this month and is subsequently coming in June, it remains to be seen if other content has been pushed back as well.

World War Z has otherwise done pretty well, almost hitting two million players as of last week. Despite the PC version being exclusive to the Epic Games Store, it still sold more than 250,000 copies within its first week. World War Z is also available for Xbox One and PS4.

Saber Interactive tells players that new Tokyo mission is "on the way."

Though its PC version is exclusive to the Epic Games Store, Saber Interactive’s World War Z has performed pretty well. According to the developer on Twitter, it’s reached nearly two million players. It proceeded to thank players for their support and said it “can’t wait for you all to play what we have in store!”

World War Z sold over 1 million copies within a week of its launch. More than 250,000 copies sold were through the Epic Games Store. A roadmap for free content has since been provided for upcoming content, with the development team working on a new mission in Tokyo. A new zombie, Extreme difficulty, new mode, and new weapons will also be added in the coming months.

Players can also expect new weapon variants, character skins, and accessories at some point. The developer didn’t provide a release date for the Tokyo mission, but assured fans that it’s “on the way.” Stay tuned for more information on World War Z in the meantime. Along with PC, it’s also available for Xbox One and PS4.

More zombies and modes are on the way.

Despite being one of the games caught up in the never-ending firestorm of controversy that surrounds the Epic Games Store, World War Z, the very loose adaptation of the Max Brooks novel of the same name, seems to have done pretty well for itself. The game scratched an itch that Left 4 Dead left upon being left for dead as the last major co-op zombie shooter. It looks like developer Saber Interactive want to keep it going, as they’ve released the roadmap for the first season of post-game content.

As you can see from the chart provided below, we will have new content drops for May, June, and July. This month we’ll see a new a mission set in Tokyo, which will feature a brand new enemy. In June, a new extreme difficulty with a six skull rating and special bonus will get added, and in July the game will see a weekly challenge mode. Across all months we’ll see additional skins and accessories.

World War Z is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
