The Media Create sales for games in Japan from June 16th to 22nd are out, and surprise, surprise but a Pokemon game is on top. It’s not your typical RPG experience though – it’s Pokemon Art Academy which sold 31,080 units for the 3DS in its opening week.

It’s followed closely by Level 5’s Youkai Watch, which sold 30,394 units and managed to sell 1,117,611 units in its lifetime. Mario Kart 8 is still going great guns for Nintendo – while The Wonderful 101 and Pikmin 3 fell off the top ten fairly quickly, Mario Kart 8 is still in the top 3. It’s sold 28,112 units this week with 469,316 units sold in its lifetime.

World Soccer Winning Eleven 2014: Samurai Blue Challenge for the PS3 managed to sell 20,600 units (lifetime sales at 123,867 units) and the PS4 version selling 7,374 units (with 50,288 units over its lifetime). Overall, it was a very slow week for releases in Japan but we’ll see how things pick up in the coming months when newer Wii U and 3DS titles hit.

Level-5’s Youkai Watch spent another week as Japan’s best selling game, according to Media Create software charts for May 5th to 11th. It sold 58,906 units this week on the 3DS, with lifetime sales now at 919,730 units.

There weren’t any big debuts for the top ten, so Mario Golf: World Tour and Mario Party: Island Tour remained in their respective places, selling 28,882 units and 20,065 units respectively this week. Bandai Namco’s Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment for the PS Vita was in fourth place with 15,972 units sold and 193,513 lifetime sales while Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call was at fifth place with 10,525 units and 115,956 lifetime sales.

The remainder of the top ten was composed of 3DS titles with Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Pokemon X and Y, Wagamama Fashion Girls Mode Yokubari Sengen! Tokimeki Up!, Kaseki Horider: Mugen Gear and Animal Crossing: New Leaf. New Leaf is especially amazing since it’s averaged more than 3.7 million units sold thus far in its lifetime.

For the week of April 28th to May 5th, Level-5’s Youkai Watch for the 3DS managed to remain on top according to the latest Media Create software sales. It sold 70,021 units, with lifetime sales at 890,525 units.

Mario Golf: World Tour debuted at second place for the 3DS with 58,745 units sold. Mario Party: Island Tour, which plummeted in the weeks past, still managed to sell 24,596 units with a lifetime sales of 100,663 units. The pink dynamo is still going strong as Kirby Triple Deluxe sold 11,080 units and averaged 601,005 lifetime sales.

It’s also worth noting that Child of Light made its debut for both the PS3 and PS4 this week. You’d think Japan would appreciate the game’s visuals and classic JRPG battle system but it only managed to sell 7,857 units on each platform. At least the PS4 now has a new release in the top ten for Japan after just floating around after launch.

The Media Create software sales for the week of April 14th to 20th are now available and it appears that Level-5’s Youkai Watch has managed to rise up several places to take this week’s number one. This is despite competition from previous week’s number one Dai-3-Ji Super Robot Taisen Z Jigoku-hen and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn for PS4.

Youkai Watch managed to sell 34,690 units in the prior week for 754,910 lifetime sales. By comparison, Dai-3-Ji Super Robot Taisen Z Jigoku-hen sold 31,724 units and managed to accrue 174,156 lifetime sales for the PS3 (Vita sales totalled 145,991 units till date). Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn had a decent opening this week, selling 31,326 units.

This was followed by Ace Attorney 123: Wright Selection, a collection of the previous Ace Attorney DS titles ported over to the 3DS, with 26,925 units in its first week. Mario Party: Island Tour continues its decent run, racking up 304,835 lifetime sales with 18,848 units sold in the past week.
