Father of Sonic joins the House of Final Fantasy.

We now know through Yuji Naka’s personal twitter that the father of the Sonic the Hedgehog series has joined with RPG kings Square Enix as of January, and will be working in a development capacity. He aims to create “an enjoyable game”, which of course, tells us very little about what he’s doing, since that’s kind of the goal of most games development.

While he is best known for breathing life into that 90’s attitude machine called Sonic, it’s reductionist to reduce his legacy to that. He was also central to the Nights into Dreams games, puzzler Chu Chu Rocket! and the early Phantasy Star titles. His experience with Phantasy Star might be one of his best assets within an RPG focused company like Square Enix.

Naka would first go independent following a falling out during the development of Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, though Sega would keep close contact, publishing some of the titles his studio Prope put out. His most recent credit is Rodea the Sky Soldier on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.

Just a quick note to let you know, I joined SQUARE ENIX in January.
I’m joining game development as before, and strive to develop games at SQUARE ENIX.
I aim to develop an enjoyable game, please look forward to it.

Sonic creator's newest game is best experienced on the Wii apparently.

Tired of the epic quests that Fallout 4 and Rise of the Tomb Raider have to offer already? Good news then: Rodea the Sky Soldier, the newest game from Sonic creator Yuji Naka is now available in North America. It should be noted that it’s available only on the 3DS, Wii U and Wii.

Interestingly, Naka recommended the Wii version on Twitter. That’s primarily due to the motion controls as you can aim at various targets to control Rodea’s movements. Meanwhile, the 3DS and Wii U rely more on drawing arcs with touch controls and having Rodea follow these.

For those waiting for the game in Europe, you still have till November 13th in Europe. Other PAL territories’ release dates will follow shortly after.

What are your thoughts on Rodea the Sky Soldier and will you be playing it at all? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned for more details.

“When Nintendo announced the Wii MotionPlus accessory in the spring two years ago, I suggested to Nintendo a project called Haunted Tower. You defeated monsters outside the screen, so the living room was the scene of the action. “

There isn’t enough detail to tell if this was a missed opportunity, but, following the pitch, Prope did end up working on Wii Play: Motion producing a mini-game called Trigger Twist …

Yuji Naka, the creator of Sonic, is set to reveal his action game which he worked on for a while now, the reveal should be this month.

“A few quite big action game projects are still in progress right now at Prope, but I’m not in a position to talk about it too much at the moment, but it is in progress.” said Naka during an interview with CVG.

“I’d love to talk more about it but my publisher is telling me not to (laughs). All I can say is it’s going to be a very original action game based in the sky and I will provide more information within this month.”

“One of the advantages of having a small studio compared to Sega is that the company is quite open to any platform, so we are already working on a few projects on Xbox 360 and PS3, but again we can’t say much about it right now but sometime it’s going to come out,” he said.

The reveal of the title should come this month, so stay tuned, the announcement will be here soon.
