The World War 2 shooter franchise has endured through the years, but how do its various titles and spin-offs rank? Find out here.

Gaming history has some long-running franchises, especially in the realm of first-person shooters with yearly iterations (you know the one). One of the more unassuming series in that regard is Rebellion’s Sniper Elite. It started in 2005 and has been going fairly strong ever since with new entries, DLC, spin-offs, and more. With its latest title, Sniper Elite: Resistance, launching on January 30th for Xbox One, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, join us as we rank the best titles in the franchise.

11. Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army 2

After the Nazi Zombies wreaked havoc in the first standalone expansion to Sniper Elite V2, who could guess they’d return for another around? Nazi Zombie Army 2 offers a new campaign with fresh locations and enemy types, and you’ll once again slay undead by the droves solo or with up to three other players. Don’t fix what isn’t broken, but when it feels more repetitive than its predecessor, you have to wonder if it’s really worth it. Nevertheless, it’s more maps for slaying zombies, which counts most for some.

10. Sniper Elite VR: Winter Warrior

Another follow-up that noticeably falls short of the original, Winter Warrior is developed by Just Add Water of Oddworld fame. Given how well the first title fared, you would expect the momentum to continue. A forgettable narrative and iffy controls later, and you realize that’s not the case. The sequel doesn’t even do enough to switch up the formula or spruce up the visuals. The gunplay is still on point, but there isn’t enough content to justify jumping in. A mixed bag overall.

9. Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army

The original and Rebellion’s first attempt at a Left 4 Dead-style undead spinoff starring Karl Fairburne but set in an alternate universe World War 2. The shift from careful and methodical sniping and stealth to gunning down zombie hordes en masse is still a huge shift for the series. Nazi Zombie Army handles it well enough, combining the realistic gunplay and X-Ray Kill Cam with new kinds of threats and co-op. Though it won’t be competing with the best co-op zombie shooters in the genre, it’s a fun ol’ time, if nothing else.

8. Sniper Elite V2

The first sequel in the series, Sniper Elite V2 focuses on Fairburne attempting to stop the V-2 rocket program in Berlin (which explains why it didn’t get a simple “2” in its title). While it received some praise for the realistic ballistics, the AI was a mixed bag, alternating between competent and imbecilic. Respawning enemies and stealth were also points of contention, with sniping being the only aspect that resonated. That’s because Sniper Elite V2 introduced what would become a staple of the series for over a decade – the X-Ray Kill Cam, rewarding kills with a bloody showcase.

7. Zombie Army Trilogy

It’s a close tie between Sniper Elite V2 and Zombie Army Trilogy in quality. However, the latter wins out by not only remastering the first Nazi Zombie Army expansions but including a third campaign. You can play through them with up to four players, choosing from eight different characters (with Left 4 Dead 1 and 2’s cast joining later for an additional eight), and even adjusting the difficulty. The famed ballistics and X-Ray Kill Cam are also present alongside dismemberment, which adds a bit more strategy. It’s still pretty repetitive and lacks much of the series’ nuance, but it’s still good for mindless fun with friends.

6. Sniper Elite VR

The first Sniper Elite VR title and one that boasts a poor narrative with some strange gates stopping you from completing the last few missions. No autosaves, bugs, underwhelming melee combat – it’s almost hard to get on board. Where it excels is in the fine mix of arcade shooting and realistic ballistics. It’s also responsive enough to make racking up points with the most creative kills enjoyable. Still far from the best in the series, but a solid option for those who want a fun sniping title in VR.

6. Sniper Elite 3

After Sniper Elite V2 underwhelmed, Sniper Elite 3 came along and…marginally improved things (while flailing even more in other departments). Technically a prequel, it saw Fairburne venture to North Africa, with new desert locations to deal with. Unfortunately, the story wasn’t much to write home about, and the AI still had its failings. Where Sniper Elite 3 succeeded is in presenting larger more open levels for players to plan out a myriad of approaches.

Sabotaging generators to mask your shots with the sound, leveraging the revamped stealth to tactically take out threats, scrounging for weapon parts, setting up traps – it all felt so liberating (and, of course, the sniping was still on point). Add on improvements to the X-Ray Kill Cam to factor in organs and bone shattering, and on several gameplay levels, Sniper Elite 3 could be a fun time.

4. Sniper Elite 1

It’s somewhat ironic that one of the better games in the franchise is the one that started it all. Sniper Elite launched in 2005, and as far as sniping-focused titles were concerned, it was unlike anything else in the WW2 shooter space. The realistic depiction of ballistics, where factoring in things like the wind, felt fresh and challenging. Sure, you didn’t get the explosive viscera of the X-Ray Kill Cam, but it was still satisfying for a bullet to dramatically reach your target in slow motion. With all the other relatively new tactics, like using louder sounds to mask your shots, it’s no wonder it received attention despite some shortcomings.

3. Zombie Army 4: Dead War

Considering its predecessors, there may not have been many expectations from Zombie Army 4. Yet somehow, everything fell in place, from the campy campaign with its zombie sharks and zoo to the X-Ray Kill-Cam triggering off explosions and well-placed shots alike. Each character has extensive progression and some fun talents; the weaponry went above and beyond, straight-up embracing the elemental and bizarre new enemies debuted, including a zombie tank. Yes, it has overpriced DLC, and yes, the gameplay can still get repetitive, but it’s the series’ – and one of Sniper Elite’s – best offerings yet.

2. Sniper Elite 5

Sniper Elite 5 is not where the series’ truly started to take a turn and really come into its own with the sandbox-style levels and freedom of playstyles. It still excels in those regards, refining the realistic sniping we know and love while presenting some of the best levels in the series. There’s also Axis Invasion, a new mode where an enemy sniper can invade your game, leading to even more tense encounters. The key shortcomings of the series remained, but it felt like Sniper Elite finally carved its winning formula.

1. Sniper Elite 4

And it all truly began with Sniper Elite 4, which took the sandbox-like maps of Sniper Elite 3 and went even bigger. Fairburne was more agile than before, capable of clambering up structures to set up his shots. Night missions introduced new twists to the stealth formula and players were freer than ever to strategically take down enemies, go guns-blazing or take a completely silent approach. While it couldn’t overcome the series’ curse of middling story-telling and AI, Sniper Elite 4 achieved a new level, elevating it into something incredibly fun.

Zombies and Nazis- two of the most killable enemies in all of media, especially video games. That’s what makes the Zombie Army titles so fun- it’s great to murder the both of them. The latest game in the series, Zombie Army 4: Dead War, came out recently, which you can read our review for through here. While that game didn’t come to the Switch, the rest of the series will at the end of this month.

Zombie Army Trilogy has been available on other systems for awhile. It collects all three of the previous games in the series in one bloody package. As you can see from the announce trailer below, it will launch on Nintendo’s system on the last day of the month.

Zombie Army Trilogy is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and will come to Nintendo Switch on March 31st. It’s confirmed to have both local wireless play and motion controller support. You can read more about that through here.

While Xbox One, PS4 and PC players can get their hands on Zombie Army 4: Dead War next year, Rebellion has something for Nintendo Switch fans as well. The developer recently announced that Zombie Army Trilogy, which collects the first three zombie-slaying titles, will release in early 2020 for the platform. That’s three story campaigns along with Horde mode for fans to consume.

Playable solo, you can also battle alongside up to four players. Local wireless play is confirmed along with motion controller, Pro Controller and HD Rumble support. It even supports the Switch’s friend invite system, allowing you to easily add others to your friends list.

As for Zombie Army 4: Dead War, it’s out on February 4th 2020 and continues the story of the Survivor Brigade as they travel Southern Europe, battling the undead. Along with new enemies like a Zombie Tank, players will make use of melee combat, weapons enhanced with lightning and fire, and different skills. Will the sequel also hit Nintendo Switch now that the original trilogy is inbound? We’ll have to wait and see.

Rebellion's zombies - and the snipers that hunt them - return.

Regardless of how you feel about Rebellion Developments’ Sniper Elite games, there’s no denying that they cater to a deep impulse within us for unorthodox gunplay. Even with Zombie Army Trilogy, the current gen compilation of Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombies 1 & 2 (along with an unreleased third game), you’re not just running trains of zombies around. Oftentimes, you need to hunker down, ready your rifle and mow down the hordes, one by one. And of course, there’s no denying the satisfying, slow motion X-ray executions that ensue.

GamingBolt spoke to Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley about Zombie Army Trilogy, including the motivation to bring the Nazi Zombies games to consoles, translating the experience to the PS4 and Xbox One and much more.

"It’s worth pointing out we never work on one game at a time - we have different teams constantly prototyping and developing different games, so making ZAT didn’t mean we weren’t working on other projects too!"

Rashid K. Sayed: What motivated the decision to bring Zombie Army Trilogy to current gen consoles as opposed to, say, a brand new experience with Sniper Elite 4?

Jason Kingsley: Well there were two simple reasons. The first and most important was the demand from the community. The original Nazi Zombie Army releases just blew up – we completely underestimated the reaction and suddenly we had lots of loyal Sniper Elite fans on consoles saying “what about us?”

The second reason was simply… we could! When we self-published the first Nazi Zombie Army in 2013, our only option was Steam for PC – consoles were closed off back then unless you had a traditional publisher.

Forget the tech for a second, the biggest advantage of the new consoles is that Microsoft and Sony have reached out to studios and indies like Rebellion and said “bring your games to us – you don’t need a publisher”.

Also it’s worth pointing out we never work on one game at a time – we have different teams constantly prototyping and developing different games, so making ZAT didn’t mean we weren’t working on other projects too!

Rashid K. Sayed: Zombie Army Trilogy serves as a compilation of the Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army games for the Xbox One and PS4. What was it like to translate the base experience to current gen consoles and how do said consoles improve upon the same?

Jason Kingsley: It fitted well to be honest – the feel of the rifles and the core third person mechanics were already proven on consoles with Sniper Elite V2 and 3. We did also already support console control pads on Nazi Zombie Army for PC of course, but for a dedicated console audience we did have to make some tweaks and adjustments to the feel of the controls. We knew this risked making Zombie Army Trilogy easier for PC players than the original games, so we kept tweaking and refining with our QA team until we got the balance spot on.

Rashid K. Sayed: ZAT is very co-op focused, especially for four players – how does this affect teamwork and the overall gameplay in terms of difficulty, quantity of zombies, etc?

Jason Kingsley: It’s true that 4-player co-op is the game’s main calling but it was always important to us that our tech could support scaling the number of zombies. That way, if a player drops out of a team the zombie levels drop dynamically to make sure you don’t get swamped unfairly.

And on the flip side there are crazy sharpshooters out there who prefer to play as a team of 2, or even solo – and change the settings to face the number of enemies usually seen by 4 players!

In terms of design, an early decision too was to allow players to pick their gameplay style, tactics and loadouts from the first minute.

Player flexibility is really important to the game’s co-op design – everyone can contribute, and everyone can save the day if things get a little scary. We deliberately avoided player “classes” because it would be no fun if 3 out of the 4 players were bleeding out for example, and the only player left was an engineer who couldn’t revive his team mates. With ZAT everyone has to adapt to what’s in front of them and the team dynamics change with them.

"I think what separates us from other horror action games is the need for focus, and a nice contradiction of high intensity with slower, more precise gunplay. Everyone needs to play their part in a team, and the tactical use of explosives plays a prominent role."

Rashid K. Sayed: The third installment particularly intrigues us. Why wasn’t this originally released in its standalone form? How did development on the Xbox One and PS4 influence the final result?

Jason Kingsley: Naturally we started working on a standalone third chapter after the success of NZA 1&2, but as soon as we started digging in to the Xbox One and PS4 kits for Sniper Elite 3 we realized the Nazi Zombie Army series would be a great fit for the new machines.

Then it was just a case of asking ourselves “What’s best for the players?” and of course one unified online community for each platform was the answer, rather than three disparate groups. We also made sure that the game was suitable for release in Germany – removing banned symbols and so on – so that players there could play online with the rest of the World, even if they saw a slightly different texture here or there.

We also knew that we needed to consider series veterans, so that’s why we’ve unlocked every mission from every chapter right from the start, and also why we gave Steam gamers a hefty discount on the Trilogy if they owned either of the first two games. That was our way of thanking them for their support, and also giving them thousands of new players to team up with!

Rashid K. Sayed: Aside from a higher resolution and frame rate, what other improvements does Zombie Army Trilogy introduce to the “snipers vs. zombies” gameplay model?

Jason Kingsley: Well I’m not sure snipers vs. zombies has actually been done too often! I think what separates us from other horror action games is the need for focus, and a nice contradiction of high intensity with slower, more precise gunplay. Everyone needs to play their part in a team, and the tactical use of explosives plays a prominent role.

More than anything, the visual and audio design throughout ZAT is the ultimate love letter to cult zombie and horror films we grew up with – there really isn’t anything out there with the same atmosphere and devotion to the source matter.

Rashid K. Sayed: With DirectX 12 tipped to make a splash on the Xbox One and more developers utilizing the PS4’s power, what excites you the most regarding the future of current gen consoles?

Jason Kingsley: The future’s bright, make no mistake. For developers like us, we know the machines are here for the long run so that gives us stability. But also they can change to meet the needs of players – think about how different the last consoles were in 2013 compared to when they launched, or consider the breadth and variety of games that can now be successful without huge marketing budgets. The consoles’ continuing evolution will keep everyone on their toes, gamers and devs alike.

"Our dev and marketing resources were dwarfed by everyone else on that list, and there’s only one explanation really – we just want to thank everyone who supported us, played our games and told their friends about them too."

Rashid K. Sayed: It’s been discovered that the PS4 is the first console for many of its owners. When bringing out a re-release like Zombie Army Trilogy, how do you balance the act of catering to those first time players of the franchise vs. giving veterans something new to look forward to?

Jason Kingsley: We didn’t have to worry about it too much – as we mentioned earlier we opened up all the levels in the game from the start, so veterans can jump into old favourites, or skip straight to the new content and horde mode.

New players on the other hand can start from the beginning, or jump into an online match with more experienced players to learn the ropes. That’s where YouTube comes in – it’s full of amazing videos showing players how to get the most out of their games – whatever their ability or experience.

Rashid K. Sayed: It’s 2015 and while zombie games are still happening, the phenomenon that exploded with The Walking Dead TV show seems to have simmered down in recent times. Will that affect the future of the Nazi Zombie Army franchise going forward?

Jason Kingsley: Not really, just like any studio we make games we want to play first and foremost. It always makes us laugh when the “oh not more zombies” line gets thrown around because the reaction from gamers is often so different to the critics who decry them. If we feel we can make another Zombie Army title that we want to play, we will. If we think it’s run its course, we’ll move onto something new!

Rashid K. Sayed: The Xbox One’s eSRAM has been the major culprit behind the resolution issues on the consoles. Now that you have actively developed on the console, have things improved on that front?

Jason Kingsley: Both Sniper Elite 3 and ZAT run at native 1080p, as do the majority of Xbox One and PS4 titles released in the last year. We really don’t know why this seems to still be a news story if we’re being honest. Developers’ games improve with the age of the hardware – this is a fact that hasn’t changed since the dawn of video games!

Rashid K. Sayed: Is there anything else you want to tell us about the game before we let you go?

Jason Kingsley: I want to talk about the game’s players actually! Last week ZAT sat in the top 10 in the UK alongside Sniper Elite 3. Our dev and marketing resources were dwarfed by everyone else on that list, and there’s only one explanation really – we just want to thank everyone who supported us, played our games and told their friends about them too.

We’ve loved seeing all the co-op lets plays and Twitch streams go live over the last few weeks, it’s been one of the most enjoyable months for Rebellion ever.

PC performance compared as well but overall, the Xbox One trumps PS4 in Rebellion's Nazi Zombie killing sim.

Rebellion’s Zombie Army Trilogy is a remastered compilation of the Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army games released in 2013 for the PC along with a third unreleased game for added content. From that standpoint alone, the games stand out as ports for the PS4 and Xbox One than remastered games.

However, Zombie Army Trilogy has also been released for the PC, fulfilling its compilation purposes while serving a Metro Redux-like role in revisiting the franchise while visually polishing it (except on a much lesser scale). Confused? Whichever way you look at it, Zombie Army Trilogy is Sniper Elite meets Zombies for the current generation of consoles. And we’re going to find out whether these games are glorified ports, full-blown remasters or something in-between.

Head to head gameplay comparison between the PS4 and Xbox One versions. Select 1080p and 60fps for the best possible quality.

In terms of resolution and frame rate, both the PS4 and Xbox One versions run at 1920×1080 resolution and 60 frames per second. Sniper Elite 3 featured the same settings but the frame rate wasn’t locked at 60 FPS, just like like Zombie Army Trilogy. Both games differ in their overall scale though (which we’ll get to in a bit) but when we looked at Sniper Elite 3 on the Xbox One and PS4, we noted frame rate fluctuations on both versions in a previous analysis. The PS4 version would drop as low as 40 frames per second and while the Xbox One did better, it was severely hurt by screen-tearing.

Zombie Army Trilogy, on the other hand, is more consistent. It’s the Xbox One version again which features the least drops in frame rate though it’s still a far cry from being locked at 60 FPS. The screen tearing is also a factor, though not as major as Sniper Elite 3 – it can occur during the bullet cam and much more rarely when running around (as noted in our official review).

Regardless of its frame rate issues, Rebellion did a much better job optimizing Zombie Army Trilogy for the PS4 and Xbox One than it did for Sniper Elite 3. This perhaps comes down to improved development on the Asura engine, Rebellion’s in-house propiertary engine which it’s been constantly working on for 14 years. Sniper Elite 3 saw the larger number of changes for Asura, managing dynamic shadows and the shift between day and night settings while managing numerous light sources. Multi-threading also helped the engine to take advantage of multi-core CPUs, a significant upgrade over Sniper Elite v2.

Asura’s biggest strength is in the use of obscurance fields. This technology essentially paints characters with soft shadows on top of natural shadows, giving definition to different body parts like the arms, chin and legs when a character is in motion. It’s meant to properly simulate real-world lighting and accomplishes it with minimal dithering. When seen in Zombie Army Trilogy, it gives a much stronger vibe and look to the zombies you kill and the soldiers you command.

Atmospheric and volumetric effects have also been significantly improved from previous games. Effects like smoke and fire look great, the foliage appears more detailed, and you’ll take note of effects like fog throughout the game. That last point is especially important since it helps mask the smaller scale of Zombie Army Trilogy’s levels. Each setting is still impressive aesthetically whether you’re traversing the dank, ruined villages or navigating streams of hellfire and you’ll only notice the change in scale if you’ve only played the regular Sniper Elite games over the years.

Not everything is hunky dory on the PS4 and Xbox One though. Both versions make use of a customized fast approximate anti-aliasing (FXAA) solution which is far from the best. It gets the job done without draining resources but one will also notice low resolution textures and crooked animations during the cut-scenes. It just goes to show you that even if it released on the PC in 2013, both games still utilized previous generation textures. This isn’t helped by the lack of depth of field, a discrepancy which is odd for any first person shooter and all the more glaring in a sniping-based game. Motion blur is included but ranks below average in its implementation.

As if the low resolution textures didn’t seem shabby enough at times, low anisotropic filtering is present on both versions, causing blurry-looking textures. Tessellation is also included on the consoles but looks significantly toned down from the PC version.

We tested the PC version of Zombie Army Trilogy on an Intel i7-4930K with two GPUs and resolution settings – the Nvidia GTX 690 at 1920×1080 resolution and the GTX 980 at 3840×2160 resolution. The results were quite impressive.

GTX 690 (1920 X 1080) – 105 fps
GTX 980 (3840 X 2160) – 48 fps

Texture quality is not only superior on the PC but it boasts a range of graphical options. Anti-aliasing, draw distance and anisotropic filtering can be maxed out (though finer AA options are missing) and super-sampling is also available as an option. Frame rate issues are lacking thanks to V-sync and the excellent optimization done by Rebellion. Even features like motion blur and tessellation look far better on the PC but that’s just stating the obvious. It should be noted that regardless of one’s configuration, strong performance is guaranteed. Admittedly, though the X-Ray bullet cam looks great across all versions, it out-cools everything else on PC.

What isn’t cool is an odd issue involving flickering lights on the PC. We don’t know what causes it but it can be quite annoying.

Conclusion:

Zombie Army Trilogy isn’t the best looking game by a long shot and it’s certainly not the most polished remaster/port available on the current generation of platforms. However, for all of its issues, Rebellion managed to excellent craft the atmosphere befitting that of a World War II, zombie-infested shooter, mixing historical accuracy with demonic events and gruesome enemies. Whether this results in a fun game or not depends on the player (and really, you should be playing it with friends).

However, if you’re utterly spent on the likes of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and don’t quite like the feel of Exo Zombies in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, the visuals in Zombie Army Trilogy are more than enough to satisfy the zombie culler in you.

Nazi zombies return to little fanfare in Rebellion's port.

One feels a certain endearment towards the Sniper Elite franchise. There aren’t many games that emphasize careful patience and slow-motion brutality over twitch shooting but Sniper Elite manages to fill that gap nicely…even though at times, it’s incredibly lacking in variety, pacing and overall mission design. The Nazi Zombie Army spin-offs take that approach and turn it into a shooting gallery, with hordes of zombies serving themselves up to your rifle. The Zombie Army Trilogy brings those shooting galleries to the Xbox One and PS4, and honestly, even with the lack of variety in the overall franchise, there’s nothing here to keep you engaged for the long haul.

Zombie Army Trilogy takes place during World War II and sees Hitler raising the dead in a last ditch attempt to conquer the Allied forces. Germany is thus a teeming nation of the undead and you – along with seven other players – will need to band together and wipe them out. Pretty straightforward and dull but then again, zombie horde shooters have never been known for their deep plot. There are eight different characters to choose from here with four new females being added to the cast. Differences are sparse between each character, functioning as little more than a unique skin for your custom load-out.

"Unfortunately, the overall twitch nature of Zombie Army Trilogy doesn't afford much opportunity to measure your shots. You'll be swarmed most times and just try to hit as many headshots as possible before the zombies get close."

With regards to weapon variety, you won’t find much to feed your Call of Duty-esque craving for bloodshed. Machines like the MP40 are relatively inaccurate and offer low damage output even when aiming for the head, causing you to rely more on handguns and rifles to down the dead. Weapons like the Preacher, the good ol’ double barreled shotgun, and the Panzerfaust let you explore a little outside of those confines though. There are also explosives like trip mine grenades, dynamite and landmines that can aid you but for the most part, the sniper rifles which will lead you to victory.

Gameplay in Zombie Army Trilogy is very simple like Left4Dead. You’ll progress from one checkpoint to the next and often times have to hold down a particular point while slaughtering waves of the undead. There will be safe-rooms to reload your ammo and change weapons. One advantage over the Left4Dead franchise is that you can properly customize your load-out before the game begins, opting for whichever rifle, handgun, machine gun and shotgun you choose. I found the M1 Garand to be exceptional in mid-range battles while the Springfield disappointed with its low ammo capacity. Only hardcore Sniper Elite players will find any real differences between the various rifles in terms of wind velocity and gravity. The rest will just see one rifle as holding more bullets or being less stable than the other.

Unfortunately, the overall twitch nature of Zombie Army Trilogy doesn’t afford much opportunity to measure your shots. You’ll be outnumbered most times and just try to hit as many headshots as possible before the zombies get too close. While this could have been a somewhat harrowing experience, it’s mitigated by the fact that character movement feels awkward and you can employ a simple kick to knock zombies down. This kind of kills the gimmick of handguns and machine guns – why line up headshots in close range when you can just knock the zombie down and bash its head? On a side note, slow motion sniper shots piercing through multiple zombie craniums is fairly entertaining.

"Rebellion did up-res all the games into 1080p though the frame rate sees some drops every now and then. The screen-tearing on the Xbox One version can also be irritating and though it doesn't pop up all the time, it's still plenty noticeable when it does."

There will be times later in the campaign where zombie snipers and heavy machine-gunners come into play. The former is especially annoying since the zombie will leap from one building to the next after taking potshots. It doesn’t really imbue the games with any sense of the franchise’s strengths. After gunning down hordes of the undead, these snipers will be little more than a nuisance and an excuse to stop, drop and snipe them into oblivion. Heavy enemies are also borderline rage-inducing since they shrug off multiple explosions, rockets and grenades.

Zombie Army Trilogy does have a few new additions. As mentioned above, eight player co-op is now possible and you can also play the third, unreleased iteration of Nazi Zombie Army. There’s no doubt that the game would be much more fun with eight players all running and screaming and having a good time. One only managed a single-player romp however and can confirm that things are very dull without a few friends. Other new content includes the spiffy Horde mode in case you want to skip the boring story and get straight to killing zombies.

Rebellion did up-res all the games into 1080p though the frame rate sees some drops every now and then. The screen-tearing on the Xbox One version can also be irritating and though it doesn’t pop up all the time, it’s still plenty noticeable when it does. Though there are undoubtedly marked improvements over the PS3 and Xbox 360, Zombie Army Trilogy doesn’t really show off what the current generation hardware is capable of. Art direction is fairly typical for a game like this with smoggy towns, dank torn-down churches and hellfire-infested landscapes. Nothing memorable but it serves its purpose.

Zombie Army Trilogy is tough to recommend without friends and even then, it won’t take long for you and your buddies to tire of the typical zombie slaying. With various multiplayer titles featuring more interesting twists – like Evolve and Battlefield: Hardline – one has to wonder how much appeal this port compilation will have for the average fan. Regardless, even if you’re in the mood for some zombie-cide, you’re better off replaying Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’s Exo Zombies mode, Left4Dead or even Black Ops 2 Zombies than investing in Zombie Army Trilogy.

Techland's open world survival horror actually outsold The Order: 1886 and Evolve.

Techland’s Dying Light is still the highest selling game in the UK across all platforms according to recent sales data from Gfk Chart-Track. This is despite the physical retail release of the open world first person survival horror releasing a month later in territories outside of North America.

What’s most surprising though is that Dying Light’s total physical sales have managed to surpass The Order: 1886 and Evolve, games that have been out longer and arguably with much more hype. Taking digital sales into account, it’ll be intriguing to see just how well Dying Light has sold since its January release.

Grand Theft Auto 5 shot up to second place in the previous week with Heists going live for current and previous gen devices. This was followed by the usual suspects with FIFA 15 and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare at third and fourth respectively. Dragon Ball Xenoverse continues to hold strong in the charts at fifth place which is odd.

The only new entrant this week was Zombie Army Trilogy which entered at eighth place. That’s pretty good considering it’s essentially a remastered version of Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army 1/2 with the third unreleased game thrown in for good measure.

To console owners, Rebellion’s Zombie Army Trilogy, which is spun off from a series of mods of its popular Sniper Elite games, are probably an unknown quantity. But with both the games so far, plus a brand new third one, coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC as part of the Zombie Army Trilogy, releasing March 6, Rebellion have decided to release a brand new video showing off just what these games are about.

This video shows off the games’ premise, as well as the four player co-op action that has made them such a hit. It also shows off explosions. Lots and lots of explosions. And all of this with a creepy British guy providing a voiceover for everything.

Check out the five minute long broadcast for yourself up there. And stay tuned to GamingBolt for more information on Zombie Army Trilogy, which launches next week on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.

Zombie Army Trilogy: Rebellion Gives You 7 Reasons To Buy The Game

It just screams, "Buy our game...please..."

Straight off the bat, I’ll be honest with you. I like the guys at Rebellion, we’ve spoken a few times in the past and they seem like an amiable bunch. But this just smacks of desperation. Rebellion have listed seven reasons that you should play the Zombie Army Trilogy and rather than list actual reasons like, “You’re combating friggin zombies with loud guns and explosives”, you instead get a Press Release that has basically been condensed into bullet points.

Reasons one through seven are as follows. A new third campaign with five new missions in new environments that are said to be “bone chilling”. The first two campaigns have been remastered with updated features. New enemy types, including the typical chainsaw wielding bad guys. Four, new players to choose from. Fifth, Tactical Zombie Dismemberment with the help of which you can blow of their legs with 2 bullets, but headshots still kill with only one bullet.

Five new maps dedicated to a horde mode. And the last reason, which is the weakest of all, a “unified online community” which is the same as every online community.

Rebellion, best known for its intense and demanding Sniper Elite series of historical shooters, had already announced that Zombie Army Trilogy, a package featuring the first two games in the series (which both started out as mods of the Sniper Elite games), as well as a brand new third game, would be coming to the Xbox One, PS4, and PC some time in the future. Now we know exactly when, as the studio confirmed that the Trilogy launches on March 6.

The package will be available as a digital download on Xbox Live, PSN Store, and Steam, but the studio also confirmed plans to distribute physical copies of the game in most regions, making this their first self published game (previous games have been published with a publishing partner, most often 505 Games).

Zombie Army Trilogy also marks the first time the series shows up on consoles; meanwhile, for PC players, Rebellion is still offering an exclusive discount of up to 60% to owners of the first two Nazi Zombie Army games via Steam, so make sure to jump on that.
