On the hand, they generate excitement over the continuation of a game that many loved. On the other, there’s the imminent dread that comes with a title that might not meet expectations. However, there’s a far worse option – that said sequel is never released. Let’s take a look at 10 such sequels that we’ll unfortunately never get the chance to play.

Before Star Wars was licensed to EA and the Battlefront name used for a new series of DICE-developed shooters, Star Wars: Battlefront was a hallowed series. Pandemic Studios handled the first two titles and TimeSplitters developer Free Radical Design seemed poised to take the next game to new heights. Star Wars: Battlefront 3 reportedly started development in 2006 but in October 2008, reports of Free Radical Design shutting down emerged (with rights for developing the sequel lost). It was apparently finished by that point but conflicting statements between the studio’s co-founders and an anonymous LucasArts employee point to problems with development. Pre-alpha footage, character renders, models and eventually, a leaked build would surface through the years, reminding us what could have been before Disney eventually took over the Star Wars IP.

So you guys will all probably remember that Nintendo has announced a media only expo starting September 13 in Japan, that is slated to focus only on the 3DS, right? There have been tons of rumors flying about the place about what kind of announcements Nintendo will make, which range from the slightly plausible (a rebranding of the system with less emphasis on the 3D aspect) to borderline ridiculous (the launch of a redesign with a second analog slider).

Well, here’s another set of rumors that seems to be slightly more plausible than any of the ones listed above. Apparently, Nintendo will use the event to unveil several new high profile 3DS games. What might these games be?

Well, as Nintendo3DSBlog reports, one of the games is highly likely to be Monster Hunter. Rumors started surfacing a while back that Monster Hunter Tri G will be surfacing for the system at TGS, and now, these rumors have been backed by an analyst firm, Mizuho Securites, which ‘expects major titles like Monster Hunter to be announced for the 3DS.’ Of course, this could either mean that Monster Hunter is being announced for the 3DS, or that major titles, like Monster Hunter, will be announced for the 3DS.

On the other end of the spectrum, we fully expect TGS to be the occasion for Kojima to unveil Zone of the Enders 3DS as well. As you might well remember, it was teased by him some time ago. Will we get an announcement in September? It seems likely.

Recently, when asked about the rumours surrounding Zone of the Enders 3 being in development, Kojima had this to say: “This is not a rumor (laughs). My team and I want to develop a new ZOE But it turns out that Kojima Productions has limited resources in terms of teams and directors.”

Kojima previously also said that the title will be released, but it will be postponed, as Konami has bigger, more important priorities.

“So at this stage we have not yet had time to work on ZOE 3 which has been postponed at the calendar. However, I think after MGS Rising, I will look seriously [at] ZOE,” Kojima later added.

He even said that he is a “very busy man” right now, as the “work as producer on the next Castlevania and ZOE” are taking up a hell lot of time.
