Even if they've laid dormant for a long time or were known for their massive scale, these franchises could work as more condensed games.

While the triple-A games industry still very much cares about bigger games that last hundreds of hours, it’s also warming up to the idea of shorter experiences. Whether they’re standalone follow-ups expanding on established titles or just small but dense titles, there are several franchises out there which could do with the same treatment. Let’s look at 15 of them here.

Deus Ex

It may sound counter-intuitive considering the scope of Mankind Divided and Human Revolution, but Deus Ex has always thrived on the number of choices it gives players. The different play styles, dialogues and approaches would fit well within the context of a tighter narrative and maybe encourage multiple playthroughs. As for what kind of story it would tell, given all the factions, conspiracies and whatnot, and whether it should feature Adam Jensen or a brand new character remains to be seen.

Truly insurmountable odds.

Games often throw bosses at us that pose a true test of skill, but every so often, they even go a step beyond that. They pit us against bosses that are designed as impossible encounters, that more or less require you to lose, either as special encounters or story-related set-pieces. In this feature, we’ll be taking a look at a few such boss encounters. Without further ado, let’s get started.

GENICHIRO ASHINA – TUTORIAL FIGHT (SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE)

Basically every boss fight in Sekiro can be a hopeless one depending on what kind of a player you are, but the tutorial boss fight against Genichiro Ashina in the opening minutes of the game is actually hopeless. It’s designed as a super-tough encounter, so the average player simply cannot get past it, and losing the fight leads to a a story cutscene where the Wolf’s arm gets cut off. It is technically possible to defeat Genichiro in this encounter, but all this does is give you a slightly altered cutscene, where your arm still ends up getting cut off.

Backward compatible HD remastered mecha action.

If you are looking at playing Zone of the Enders on a modern system, but without ponying up for the VR remake of the second game, you’re in luck. Zone of the Enders HD Collection, which was, you guessed it, an HD collection of the two Zone of the Enders games released for the previous generation consoles, has been added to Xbox One’s backward compatibility feature. So, you’re playing an emulated version of an HD port of two PS2 games on your Xbox One. Kinda neat.

While Zone of the Enders: HD Collection is the headline game of this new batch, it’s not the only one- also added to the list of backward compatible games is Rumble Roses XX, a fan service heavy fighting game with female wrestlers and fighters featuring, well, a lot of fan service. It’s definitely not safe for work. Or home, if you live with family.

So, just Zone of the Enders: HD Collection, then.

Combat is an integral part of many games but it isn't always without consequences.

Video games serve a number of purposes, from unwinding to challenging one’s mind. While they also serve as a bastion of freedom, you’re not always free from the consequences of your actions. In fact, some games like reminding you of your misdeeds, even building their entire narrative structure on the same. So let’s take a look at 15 games that mock you for – you guessed it – murdering too many NPCs.

Ghosts With The Sorrow – Metal Gear Solid 3

Remember that fight with The Sorrow? The depressing trudge through the afterlife? As it turns out, the various ghosts represent the people that Snake has killed up till that point. So obviously, killing many enemies will see them appear. Of course, any experienced Metal Gear Solid player knows this isn’t the first time the game mocks you for your killing.

Some bosses just won't die when you want them to.

We’ve covered all kinds of bosses lately. Disgusting bosses, anticlimactic bosses, bosses that keep coming back for more, you get the drift. However, there’s a special kind of boss that warrants attention for their inability to die, at least legitimately and in certain parts of certain games. So while they may be invulnerable in one fight, you can probably best them later. For other situations though, let’s look at 15 video game bosses that you can’t kill, no matter what. Warning: The word “impossible” and variations of it are repeated a lot.

Note: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of, and should not be attributed to, GamingBolt as an organization.

Fortune (1st Battle) – Metal Gear Solid 2

It’s not like “Lady Luck” Fortune is the toughest boss to kill in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. She possesses a portable rail gun that can rip you apart easily but damaging her initially is impossible because bullets simply don’t hit her. Chalk this up to an electromagnetic device on her person that can deflect bullets and even disable nearby explosives. Whatever the case may be, just don’t waste your bullets in the early going.

War never changes.

I’m not going to bother recapping the entire Konami-Kojima debacle so far- I think it’s pretty well known now. That said, the Konami led purge of Kojima ands his name, as well the name of his studio, from all media and materials continues. After we reported yesterday that his name had been expunged from the Silent Hills website, today, it turns out that it has also been removed from the website for Zone of the Enders HD.

This essentially means that everything that Kojima had his fingers in at Konami- Zone of the Enders, Metal Gear Solid, and the upcoming Silent Hills- he is no longer being credited for as much as is legally possible. This, of course, ties in with the rumors that he is all set to leave Konami once work on Metal gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain concludes.

We will keep you posted on further developments.

UPDATE: As of right now, Konami seems to have re-inserted the Kojima name and branding in all media and descriptions on the Zone of the Enders website. The branding remains absent from other websites where it was removed from. We will keep you posted on further updates.

Thanks, VideoGamer.

The PS3 versions of previous games will be patched.

Hideo Kojima, boss of Kojima Productions, has scrapped Zone of the Enders sequel and has also dismantled the development team. The Zone of the Enders HD Collection didn’t sell all that well it seems and Kojima feels disappointed by it.

He has announced that the team will be fixing some of the performance issues and the PS3 version will be patched. There’s no mention of the Xbox 360 patch.

It seems he’s not sure whether fans want a sequel to Zone of the Enders but he said that he will re-evaluate the series in future.

The game that was announced last year was going to be released on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and could have been something that would have done justice to the series. Maybe he can still give the game to Platinum Games and since their work rate is high, we may yet see a sequel.

Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Hideo Kojima’s Zone of the Enders franchise has garnered a massive cult following over the years, with the cries for a third installment in the robot battling saga getting increasingly insistent. The announcement of a Zone of the Enders Collection earlier this year gave a lot of hope to some fans about the possibility of a third installment, and now it seems that a third game in the series might indeed be in development, and on the 3DS of all platforms.

As reported by 1Up, Kojima recently tweeted a lot of pictures. One of these was the headlining image above. If you look carefully, there is the stylized Z.O.E up there to the left, followed by what looks like the same Z.O.E flipped around. However, there are no periods in the flipped text, which means that it now reads as Z.O.E 3DS.

This tease (if that is what it is) would certainly be in line with some of the earlier ones by Kojima. A Zone of the Enders 3DS, provided it’s a new game and not a Snake Eater-esque port, would do wonders, giving the system an exciting new piece of software that hardcore gamers can get behind.

We will have more for you on this as it develops.
