The horror game puts players in the shoes of a zookeeper who must keep the animals safe while also curing a deadly parasite.

Horror game Zoochosis is making its way from PC to consoles. Developer Clapperheads and publisher Playworks have announced that the game will be coming to PS4 and PS5. While a release date hasn’t been confirmed for the console release, there is a new trailer for the announcement that you can check out below.

The short trailer, coming in at less than a minute long, starts things off on a cuter note before getting right into its general horror vibe. The trailer also showcases the bodycam-styled perspective used by Zoochosis, and how it amplifies the horror presented by the game’s infected animals.

In Zoochosis, players step into the shoes of a zookeeper during a night shift. While players will spend plenty of time caring for the various animals as the night zookeeper, things start getting out of hand when some animals exhibit strange behaviour. Ultimately, a parasite has infected several animals, and it’s up to the player to identify the infected animals and develop vaccines to save them before the parasite can spread out of control.

Since there is quite a bit of emphasis on discovering the vaccine to get rid of the parasite, the player making the right decisions in what animals they can save will play a big part in unlocking one of the title’s several endings

Zoochosis was originally released on PC back in September 2024. The horror themes focus on differences between how animals would usually react versus when they have been infected by the parasite.

Since its original PC release, Zoochosis has gotten quite a few updates. A recent one from last month introduced a host of bug fixes, including one of the earlier boss fights. With the update, the studio also introduced what it refers to as Screamer System 2.0.

According to the studio, it was meant for release, but time constraints during development led to delaying it to a post-launch update.

For more details, here are our thoughts about the game from before its release. Also check out our feature about new games that are doing something unique, which also includes Zoochosis.

The horror title sees a zookeeper attempting to survive when a strange parasite turns all the animals into terrifying monsters.

Some games, like Frontier’s Planet Zoo, invite you to care for animals and ensure their survival. Then there are titles like Clapperhead’s Zoochosis, a survival horror title from the perspective of the bodycam where the animals want to take care of you (and not in a good way). It’s out on September 23rd for PC – check out the latest trailer, courtesy of IGN.

Zoochosis sees the player as a zookeeper on a night shift. The process is pretty straightforward, as you prepare meals and whatnot, until a parasite starts spreading, transforming the animals into terrifying, ravenous body horrors. Your job is to help them, using an injection gun with cures to stop the parasites.

Interestingly, one’s choices of rescued animals and the methods for curing them will influence the ending. If there is a “good” ending, achieving it may be easier said than done with the Cronenbergian creatures running around. Stay tuned for more details on the title en route to release and check out our feature.

With this feature, we take a look at Clapperheads' upcoming Zoochosis and try to break down what makes it so creepy.

The games industry has no shortage of interesting games set to release in the near future. There are plenty of interesting releases scheduled to come out left, right, and center – and many of these titles originate from lesser-known studios that are doing a fantastic job of bringing to life weird and fresh ideas that we have never seen before. With this feature series, we try to take a look at such games and discuss them at length to give them the spotlight they deserve.

Today, we will be taking a look at Clapperheads’ upcoming Zoochosis which combines different gameplay genres and contrasting ideas to create something that looks amazing and has us salivating to know more. Clapperheads is a small game studio that previously worked on the free-to-play horror adventure Sparky Marky, and Zoochosis in many ways feels like a natural evolution of the ideas found in its previous games.

Zoochosis puts players in the shoes of a zookeeper whose job is to ensure that everything related to these animals remains up to order at all times. But things rarely ever proceed in that fashion, and soon the zoo becomes home to nightmarish creatures that must be stopped from wreaking havoc upon other animals in the premises. You see, there is a central cause behind the mysterious mutation of animals in the zoo – and you must work towards unraveling the conspiracy behind it all while trying to minimize the damage done through the infection.

The developers have stated that the story is going to be open-ended in nature, and the choices that you make throughout the narrative will serve as a deciding factor in the concluding chapters of the story. Depending on which animals you choose to save and which ones you let go of, players will be treated to different endings which also adds an element of replayability to the whole affair.

Coming to the gameplay side of things, Zoochosis’ gameplay starts out simple. You have to monitor the behavior of different animals which can range from taking regular thermal scans to analyzing their excreta for abnormalities or it could just be plain behavioral monitoring through surveillance cameras. It’s all routine work that wouldn’t be all that interesting in a general sense, but the fact that anything can go wrong at any time should help in keeping tensions high throughout the story.

Zoochosis’ developers have managed to really nail the horror aesthetic through creepy visuals and smart use of murky colours like red, green, and brown to really discomfort players from their core and make them uneasy. Take for instance how a dead body is brought into a grinder, and then the meat is chopped into fine chunks that are then fed to the animals in the zoo. There are several instances of such horrors spread throughout the zoo, and it would be interesting to see how it all plays out in the final release.

The star of the show is definitely going to be the mutated animals and their associated designs. Zoochosis’ trailers didn’t reveal much in that regard, but the sheer thought of a giraffe on spider legs turning into an animal mauling menace is as genius as it is scary, and the artists over at Clapperheads have done an amazing job of fully realizing those horrors with those designs. It’s obvious that the final release will be chock full of similarly mutated animals that will unnerve you from the very core, and we can’t really wait to see what’s in store.

Zoochosis will also task you to turn these animals back to normal, and that process would require some research and gathering of materials to craft the right antidote for the right creature. Acquiring these materials wouldn’t obviously be an easy job, so players will have to be strategic in how they move around the facility and how to avoid the dangers that lurk within its walls. The trailer showcases the protagonist crafting a tranquilizer gun for the aforementioned spider giraffe, and shooting a dose on its neck to get it back to normal. We don’t know whether we can expect thrilling boss fights against some of these creatures or not, but even the prospect of experiencing it all is something that has us salivating at the very thought of it all.

Coming to the visuals, the majority of Zoochosis’ visual appeal stems not from the raw visual fidelity on offer but from the art direction itself. Apart from the interesting creature mutations, the art team deserves due credit for capturing the essence of the different animals that inhabit the zoo. Throughout the trailer, we see cute little penguins strutting across artificial glaciers, gorillas going about their daily business, and kangaroos playing with each other. There’s impressive biological diversity to be found within Zoochosis, and that is one of the biggest reasons why we are so excited about the game. The developers have made good use of Unreal Engine 5, and the lighting and texture work are especially notable in the game’s visual presentation.

Zoochosis is a really interesting concept that takes inspiration from the likes of Five Nights at Freddy’s and expands those net of ideas into something much bigger and much grander in scope. The thought of setting this drama against a familiar backdrop like a zoo is a pretty genius move, and there’s definitely quite a lot of potential that can be capitalized on. The biggest challenge in Zoochosis would be to balance the different shades of gameplay in a manner that one doesn’t overpower the other. Of course, nailing that balance is going to be tricky – but Clapperheads looks to be on the right track to deliver an experience that might just turn out to be one of the biggest surprise hits of the year.

And that neatly brings us to the release side of things. Zoochosis is on track to release sometime in Q4 2024 – so thankfully we won’t have to wait too long to get our hands on this game. The developers announced the game earlier this year, so it also gets the advantage of having a shorter marketing cycle and keeping the hype and anticipation high throughout that period of time. However, it’s always possible that we may see some delays since we don’t have a concrete release date even now that we are in the second quarter of the year.

As of now, Zoochosis is only set to release on PC but it’s also possible that we might get console ports later down the line. But that majorly depends upon how the game ends up being received, so it’s best to keep expectations in check for now. Hopefully, the team is able to deliver a game that not only fulfills its potential but also surpasses the expectations of fans. Fingers crossed, until then.

With this feature, we take a look at 15 upcoming games that are trying to do something fresh and original that we haven't seen before.

The games industry is at a really interesting place right now, with development tools and publishing platforms being accessible to teams of varying sizes and budgets. As such, we are being treated to a vast array of differing experiences that dare to stand out from the crowd on account of their unique gameplay ideas or mechanics. To that end, here are 15 of the biggest upcoming games that are trying to do something different.

Crimson Desert

Currently in development at Pearl Abyss, Crimson Desert is an open-world game brimming with unrivaled ambition and vast swaths of potential. The game puts you in the shoes of a warrior who must battle insurmountable odds to save his kingdom from peril, and that journey is characterized by varied missions and complex game systems that are closely knit with one another to create something that looks truly mesmerizing and fresh.

Death Stranding 2

Death Stranding was not everyone’s cup of tea when it was released, but many fans eventually warmed up to this peculiar kind of cargo-hauling experience and came to appreciate its design and the meaning behind its world. Kojima is hard at work on Death Stranding 2, a sequel that will most likely showcase the true potential of a Strand game with its gameplay innovations and narrative developments. The teaser is chock full of questions waiting to be answered, and we are definitely excited to see what’s in store.

War of the Worlds

Developed by FlipSwitch Games, War of the Worlds is a game that tells a story of humans trying to survive against an alien onslaught. It features shades of both action and horror as you slowly tiptoe around urban neighborhoods in search of a safe haven from all the commotion happening outside. It looks like a pretty open-ended game that allows different forms of gameplay ranging from driving to exploration and much more, and the multiplayer aspect also allows you to assume the role of aliens and experience the narrative from a new angle.

inZOI

inZOI is a new life simulator that lets you live out a virtual life to the fullest as you try to keep tabs on hunger, happiness, and other meters of each individual that you control. It boasts incredible levels of fidelity thanks to the power of Unreal Engine 5. inZOI has definitely managed to impress us with its vast array of gameplay options and the sheer breadth of choices you get within its sandbox elements.

Mouse

Mouse’s concept of creating a violent first-person shooter with the jovial art style of cartoons might sound like something straight out of a fever dream, but it all surprisingly works while looking absolutely bonkers. The animation work is immaculate, and the gunplay seems really fun. Add to that a noir-inspired story that would most likely have morally gray characters and twists and turns galore, and Mouse becomes a really interesting game that’s worth keeping an eye out for.

Zoochosis

Clapperheads is hard at work on the upcoming Zoochosis, a game that puts you in the shoes of a zookeeper of a very peculiar zoo. As the only person with the responsibility of keeping the animals safe and sound, you must keep inspecting these creatures for signs of mutation or infection – and deliver rapid response vaccines to keep things in check. Zoochosis also manages to throw in shades of horror with its dark and dreary aesthetic, and fierce mutations that can lead to scary outcomes.

Screenbound

Screenbound is one of the most creative ideas we have seen in recent memory, combining a 3D world with a 2D world in a very interesting fashion. Certain elements of the game world are only visible in the 3D realm, while others like the enemies are only visible on a 2D screen glued to the hands of the protagonist. There’s definitely some inherent jankiness or frustrations that might come from such a gameplay mechanic, but it would be interesting to see how the developers tackle those challenges and create something that’s as fun as it is unique.

Unrecord

It’s easy to mistake Unrecord’s trailer for actual real-life footage, and that statement alone speaks volumes about its spectacular attention to detail. Everything from the texture work to the lighting and the animations has been created with extremely high levels of fidelity, and it makes great use of Unreal Engine 5’s graphical feature set to deliver something that genuinely feels like a step up from current-gen games. In addition to the visuals, Unrecord also provides an interesting gameplay loop that combines action elements with tactics to create something that’s both thrilling and engaging.

Light No Fire

From the developer behind No Man’s Sky, Light No Fire feels like the natural evolution of the formula found in Hello Games’ debut title. Light No Fire is set against a massive open world that’s about the size of the Earth built to scale, and that vast space is filled with procedurally generated map geometry and a diverse cast of flora and fauna spread across multiple biomes. It truly feels like a world ripe for exploration, and it would be interesting to see Hello Games’ morphing its past learnings into an entirely new universe.

Project TH

Heavily inspired by the likes of Splinter Cell or Hitman, Project TH is an upcoming action-adventure stealth game that puts you in the shoes of a covert operative who must make his way through enemy-infested mazes and complete objectives without raising alarms or commotion. Project TH impresses with its photorealistic visuals and smooth-flowing animations, making it a perfect showcase for the power of current-gen gaming systems.

Europa

Set against the backdrop of an alien world, Europa is a tale about the last human alive trying to survive in a world that plays by its own rules. It features a cartoony aesthetic that has a distinct charm to it, and that also lends a really relaxing vibe to the overall experience. The gameplay entails exploring the many biomes spread throughout its world, solving puzzles, and taking part in missions that will test your survival skills to the fullest.

Exekiller

Exekiller is a game that presents an interesting dichotomy of the past and the future. It takes the familiar setting of the American Wild West that is usually associated with horses and cowboys, and meshes those elements into a futuristic dystopia ruled by capitalism and technology. Apart from the more aesthetic elements, Exekiller also features a complex gameplay that prioritizes player freedom with the ability to craft your own narrative in a world brimming with choices and an open-ended combat loop.

Paranormal Tales

Built using Unreal Engine 5, Paranormal Tales does a great job of actually seating you into the horror. It showcases multiple horror vignettes from different perspectives like a bodycam or a VHS tape, but the more impressive part of the game is how it plays on the fear of the unknown with a stunning atmosphere and appropriately ominous sound design.

Black Myth Wukong

Game Science’s upcoming Black Myth Wukong remains one of the more interesting takes on the Souls formula, and that largely boils down to how the developer meshes those ideas with its own and in doing so creates something that’s just as recognizable as it is fresh. With a beautiful art design and compelling fast-paced gameplay, Black Myth Wukong has no shortage of impressive elements to its presentation.

Pragmata

Currently in development, Pragmata looks like a wonderfully eccentric experience that raises more questions than it answers. The short teaser trailer showcases lunar travel, otherworldly beings, and an astronaut who apparently has to save Diana. While it’s difficult to make sense out of such visuals, they are definitely enchanting to say the least. While details about the gameplay remain shrouded in mystery for now, it is apparently inspired by modern action games so that’s something to look forward to as well.
