Fumito Ueda, Team Ico’s creative director, has claimed that the previous two games that he directed and designed, the critically adored Ico and equally beloved Shadow Of The Colossus, were financially unsuccessful because “they weren’t good enough. They didn’t have enough to appeal to users.” This followed a question from EDGE magazine asking if Ueda was bothered by the fact that the constant cries from gamers for originality are not reflected in sales figures. Ueda continued “The Last Guardian wants to learn from this. I’m making the game so that it’s appealing, with the hope that many people will give it a try and love it.”
In the same interview Ueda was asked about future design ambitions, to which he responded: “I’d like to make 2D games. Right now, that’s what I’d like to do – it may change tomorrow. Oh, and an FPS. Yes, I’d like to make an FPS. I play quite a lot of FPS games in my free time.”
