I agree. It is a game that becomes an itch that must be scratched. Eventually, with therapy, misdirection and the encouragement of loved ones, an application of V-benadryl will help push the call of the Dragonborn into the background.
Until, one day, by mistake, you take an arrow to the....: ARGH!!!! Ewh, must scratch, must scratch, must 'SHOUT!' Ah, home again, sigh.

Agreed. I have many hours on Skyrim and it's still playable. No other company has made a game like that. Fallout 3 is still playable. Assassin's Creed, not so much. All they need to do to keep Skyrim going, is to make the AI tougher, and of course there should be a natural progression quest line for the Dragonborn to complete quests for all the Aedra and Daedra leading to Imperial Throne.

I cannot disagree more vehemently with this article. Open world has been the theme of these games since Daggerfall. Your example of GTA 5 as a good story line is ridiculous.

The GTA 5 storyline, though good, is very short. You can get easy through it in a couple of long sessions. GTA 5 storyline plays like it is on rails. There are a handful of sidequests, but none of them are terribly involved. And once you are done with the storyline in GTA 5, the game is pretty much over unless you want to play online with a bunch of hackers, with way too much time on their hands, and the best gear you can get.

Skyrim had scores of side quests, and side story lines many involving multiple sub-quests. Add to that the hundreds of third party mods and add-ons and you have one of the best adventure games ever. The only thing Skyrim lacks is dozens of cut scenes. Other than that it was huge, open world, beautiful (especially w/ third party mods), and new content is still rolling out for it (the new stuff is mostly free).

The only bad thing about Skyrim's story line was the game breaking bugs. Bethesda has always been notorious for bugs.
