Wolfenstein 3D wasn&#039;t actually 3D rendered. It provided a &quot;pseudo 3D&quot; affect by using ray casting to basically skew textures to make it look like you are in a 3D space, while a depth buffer made sure that an enemy &quot;behind&quot; a corner couldn&#039;t be seen. Obviously because it wasn&#039;t &quot;true 3D&quot; it was limited to a &quot;single plane&quot; environment. Even with Doom, the game, when you went up stairs, you were still on the same virtual plane. As a result, you will NEVER find a &quot;bridge&quot; or &quot;tunnel&quot; that goes under or over another path/room.

One last thing, while Wolfenstein 3D obviously made &quot;3D&quot; popular, games like Catacomb 3D and Hovertank 3D used the same technique to do all that the W 3D engine did.]]></description>
