Valve Would Allow EA’s Origin to Run on SteamOS

Gabe Newell is serious about the openness of the platform.

Valve’s Steam and EA’s Origin services may be bitter rivals – especially because the latter hasn’t been able to replicate the success of the former – but with the openness of the upcoming SteamOS and Steam Machines, Gabe Newell has little issue allowing Origin on the platform.

Answering a question on Reddit about the platform being very proprietary, Newell responded, “What part is proprietary? We’re trying to make it as open as possible. If EA wants to put Origin on [SteamOS or Steam Machines], that would be fine.”

This doesn’t mean that EA will actually bring Origin to SteamOS. In fact, EA has been notorious for actually taking its games off of Steam in order to boost their sales – and thus increase flow towards – Origin. It certainly seemed like a good idea at first but Steam still towers over Origin in user numbers.

That being said, would you be interested in seeing Origin on SteamOS?
