While for some people, the game may be addictive, that doesn't mean that it does anything to make people become violent. This guy had other issues that should be evaluated first. Drinking is probably the biggest factor here but it is hard to tell. The story lacks a lot of information for readers to make an informed analysis. Maybe the guy had other mental issues or had some confrontation with another person. We don't know based on the tiny bit of information presented. I just can't see though how you can associate the game as the cause when there are millions of people playing the game without a similar reaction.

That and, what really compelled him to choke her? Even with my own dissociation problems (As most frequent videogamers have. Cause everytime you play as someone else in an alternate reality you are dissociating) I would never have thought choking was the viable answer. Maybe it’s the difference in sub-cultures in America, actually I’m not too far away from his town in Florida, so what actually compelled someone to choke another even while drunk is something that kind of disturbs me.

Piss ass drunk, I can control myself better than this guy. Obviously there are more problems at play here than just drinking. But since it has a tendency of keeping you from making judgment calls on your thoughts before you act on them, obviously something compelled him to choke his mother. So I don’t necessarily blame the game. And I don’t blame the violent nature of most video games. However they are attributing factors, but the 27 year old still living in his mom’s house was more than likely used to be being dissociated with reality and while you can’t choke someone in WoW, the term “Choke a Bitch” probably wasn’t too far from his cognition.

He didn’t choke his mother because of WoW, he choked his mother because he was drunk, 27 and still living at home. The game isn’t the problem, his addictive personality and lack of self-motivation are.

A 50 yr old mother who has a 27 yr old son and 3 grandkids who all live together with the mother’s parents?! The guy was drinking and the grandfather misfires a gun in a house with 3 children. Warcraft is the least of this messed up family’s problems.

It is not certainly part of the issue. Video game violence has never and will never lead to an increase in real life violence. Look up the statistics for goodness sake. Stop blaming this 27 year old loser’s problems on a video game. The author of this piece needs to get a life and look at facts and data before making an assumption that holds no water. The man is 27 years old, living with his mom (that is an issue). The man was drinking with three children in the same room (that is an issue). The man was playing World of Warcraft (along with 11 million other people, not an issue). Stop making this about video gaming and look at the real problems.
