Why Half Life 3 Will Probably Never See The Light of the Day

Gabe Newell talks about why the company is doing what it's doing currently.

Half Life 3, despite all indications of its development at Valve Software, still isn’t out. Speaking to the Washington Post, Valve co-founder Gabe Newell attempted to explain exactly why without mentioning Half Life 3 in particular.

As a follow-up to how the company works in specific situations, Newell stated that, “So, if somebody becomes the group manager of X, they’re going to really resist it when X is not what you want to do in the next round of games.

“You don’t want them to sort of burrow into that – you want them to recognize that being really good at Half-Life level design is not as nearly as valued as thinking of how to design social multi-player experiences. You’ve had them feel like they have an organization and title tied up to something when the key is to just continue to follow where the customers are leading.”

Whether we like it or not, Valve knows it has other priorities outside of bringing Half Life 3 out and believes there is greater success in pursuing those goals rather than banging their heads on a game that by Newell’s own admission is far from ready.
