"With the Wii, Nintendo managed to return from the brink of being driven out of the hardware market and suffering the humiliation of going software only like its former sparring partner, Sega. "

stop reading after this. Nintendo was never in any danger.

This is truly how I feel about how the next-generation of consoles will most likely play out but there are two more scenarios. Either a Genesis-scenario or a DreamCast-scenario.

Totally agree with this article.

I really think the graphics thing is a non issue. 360/PS3 are Direct X 9 graphics and Wii U is Direct X 10.1. The 720/PS4 will be Direct X 11. The jump from Direct X 9 to 10.1 is quite noticeable, while Direct X 11 is a pretty mild upgrade in what you perceive in actual gameplay. Wii U will have about an 18 month head start and by the time the 720/PS4 come out, we'll see developers really pushing the Wii U and the price will have dropped.
I think a lot of gamers will get on board as they will have access to Core games, Nintendo games and it's Virtual Console of games from the past. That's a lot of bang for your buck.
So far I have been very impressed with Nintendo's strategy and feel Sony and Microsoft are in a difficult position. They won't want to make the losses they experienced last time around especially with the threat of mobile/smart tv gaming. So can't offer some kind of super computers at a loss. At the same time they don't have the innovative games that Nintendo can only do. On top of that, they won't even have the upper hand with the Core games as Nintendo will be getting these too.
Looks like an interesting battle ahead!
