Some people will upgrade every 3 years. Some people will wait. Look at PS. There are still people playing on PS3. There are people that bought the PS4 launch day. And of those that bought the PS4 launch day, there are people that bought the PS4p launch day.

Console refreshes are good for the consumers as long as games are made backwards compatible for at least -1 cycle, and developers will not fights -1 cycle compatibility because they want to sell more games. Look at how many first round PS4/XB1 games came out on PS3/XB360.

- TFLOPs didn't matter until others made it matter
- people didn't dismiss FP16 just because they dismissed the rhetoric and lies that it effectively doubles the power of the chip. eg: 4.2tflops is 8.4flops. what is also interesting is that the developers who're using it has to use it with checkerboard rendering.
- again, resolution didn't matter until others made it so (from 2013 to 2016 it was all about power for ps fanboys, move into 2017 it suddenly all about games and power doesn't matter. but go back to those digital foundrey videos on youtube or articles about games running better on ps4 and you'll see all the talk about how powerful the ps4 was and now those same people are saying power doesn't matter.
-
to me power is not the be all end all but it's a great addition for the games. those who want the best performance and best visuals will gravitate towards the more powerful console because there will always be games for it. multiplatform games will run better on it which are mostly the games you will play with your friends. I don't care if a game is exclusive or not, I care if I enjoy the game or not and I think that is the big difference.

I dunno maybe, Sony are rumoured to release a ps4 pro slimmer version with 4k bluray this year. That would be nuts of them to do it though

It's only a big jump if you compare it against the current One console which was weaker than it should have been. Compared to the PRO, it is still a nice upgrade.
Compared to the One, it is like a whole new system and moving forward, they can scale upwards without breaking compatibility...just like Sony.
