There’s no reason why they can’t rent servers from a 3rd party like AWS. I think a few years ago, Microsoft offered Sony some Azure servers to try to get cross play off the ground. But I think stabilising and implementing new features on PSN should be the top priority. I find it ridiculous that it took Sony 7+ years to find a way for users to alter their PSN username.

I’m for cross platform play, too, because I believe that small games can get a better chance of success if the gaming community is bigger, and it can only be bigger when united. Plus, toxic gamers are everywhere, thus no reason to worry too much about that.
As for the servers, if Sony keep selling console at this pace they surely need to implement their servers, not to the extent of Azure’s, but in ten years, when streaming games will be a common feature, what will they do?
