Activision: Destiny Has Potential to Become Next Billion Dollar Series

CEO Eric Hirshberg also plays down reduced pre-orders for COD: Ghosts.

During a recent earnings call, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg revealed that Bungie’s Destiny, an open world online shooter set in a brand new sci-fi universe, had the potential to become the next billion-dollar franchise. Apparently, pre-order records for the game are set to reach an all-time high for new IPs, and it will easily join the ranks of Call of Duty and Skylanders as the publisher’s next active billion-dollar bread-winner.

Speaking of Call of Duty, Hirshberg also commented on the pre-order numbers for Infinity Ward’s upcoming Call of Duty: Ghosts, stating that while they were “well below” last year’s numbers for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, it was to be attributed more to the next gen shift.

“However, our quantitative consumer research indicates that hesitation amongst past [Call of Duty] pre-orderers is primarily due to not knowing which platform they will be playing on, which is natural at this time in the console transition.”

Destiny is set to release next year for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 and PS4, with Call of Duty: Ghosts set to release fpr current gen platforms on November 5th and next gen consoles later this year.
