The lack of backward compatibility in the PS4 is one of the things the system has been criticized for the most, especially when direct competitors Microsoft have been making strides in the same area with the Xbox One. However, with the next generation of consoles, Sony have already confirmed that the PS5 will indeed be backward compatible with all PS4 titles.
Speaking at Sony’s Investor Relations Day 2019 (via Twinfinite), PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan spent quite a bit of time speaking of backward compatibility and how Sony plans on leveraging it with the PS5. Most notably, Sony plans on using PS5’s backward compatibility to “transition our community to Next Gen faster and more seamlessly than ever before”.
Sony views PS5’s backward compatibility support as being “incredibly important”, and thinks it will be a “really critical success factor” for the console and how it performs.
With the PS5 (presumably) launching before 2020 ends (though not too soon, as per Sony), we can probably expect to hear more about the console in a more formal capacity not long from now. Perhaps we’ll hear more about its backward compatibility and how else Sony plans on leveraging it as well. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for continued updates.
