While Baldur’s Gate 3 has been an undeniable success for developer Larian Studios, CEO Swen Vincke has described its next project as a new RPG that is “crazy ambitious”. While Vincke hasn’t provided any details about the game, he has said in an interview with GameSpot that the studio is currently “deep in the trenches” in development. Check out the complete interview below.
Vincke spoke about how the new project is causing him to remember “how much work it is to make a game or a big RPG.” He goes on to say that it is already “shaping up quite well” and that the studio is currently hard at work on the project.
“We’re deep in the trenches on working on our next big thing,” said Vincke when asked where the studio was with its next project. “It’s shaping up quite well actually, but it’s crazy ambitious. I mean, there are so many new things we can do these days, so yeah. It’s complex. On top of that, we’re trying to figure out how we’re going to be making two games.”
When it comes to working on multiple projects at the same time, Vincke points out that one of the biggest challenges tends to arise from the logistics and management aspect.
“Organising ourselves for [two projects] is also not the easiest thing in the universe,” he explained. “We make very complicated games with lots of permutations, with lots of agency for players. So predicting when those are going to be finished is hard, and then trying to organise two games around that is even harder. So we’re keeping ourselves busy, really.”
“We are in a position where we can craft multiple RPGs side by side so that we don’t have to worry about people going idle – that’s actually the main reason we’re doing multiple projects right now,” he said.
Back in January, Vincke took to social media to speak about the development of Baldur’s Gate 3, the mainstream success of the game, and how nostalgic he felt about the journey that the studio took to release the game. He also pointed out that the story for Larian isn’t over yet and that fans should stay tuned for their next big project.
“Got me all nostalgic – it really has been an incredible journey so far. But the story ain’t over yet,” wrote Vincke on X. “Stay tuned. Going to try to skip the dark night of the soul moment, though, if you don’t mind.”
The studio had previously confirmed that its next game would not be a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3, but two projects based on the studio’s IP. The studio did point out that working on a game based on Dungeons and Dragons was a “dream come true for all of us.”
While we still don’t have much in the way of details, the studio had said back in April that it will likely be launching its next game as an Early Access title, mimicking how it developed major RPGs like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2.
