Capcom: Deep Down Being Free To Play Is ‘A Necessary Risk’

'This title is the starting point for our growth on next gen consoles.'

Capcom first showed off a stunning looking tech demo that they enigmatically called ‘Deep Down’ back in February last year, when the PlayStation 4 first debuted. Players imagined an epic new fantasy action adventure game from the company, but were somewhat disappointed when, later that year, Capcom not only revealed that the title would be free to play, but also that it had been downgraded. Many linked one of these developments to the other.

Ever since late last year, when Capcom delayed Deep Down, they have been silent about the game. However, at a recent shareholders meeting, they spoke up about it again, including addressing the title’s free to play status.

“We understand that there are some risks, partly because ‘Deep Down’ is our first free-to-play game for a next-generation console,” a Capcom representative replied. “But we believe that risk taking to some extent is required in part because this title is the starting point for our growth in content sales for next-generation consoles.”

“Furthermore, a business model in which we do not simply sell games has the advantage of giving us access to feedback from users. We are able to use that information to solve issues, so we plan to continue to refine and update “Deep Down” for some time.”

Well… I guess this title might just pull off being the first truly premium free to play game on consoles? We’ll see. Stay tuned,
