Cyberpunk announced by CD Projekt RED

CD Projekt RED announced a brand new RPG shooter called Cyberpunk, based on the classic pen & paper RPG game Cyberpunk 2020.

CD Projekt RED CEO Marcin Iwiński said that Cyberpunk aims to be a “realistic and brutal” RPG for ‘mature’ audiences. It will consist of an “intelligent” non-linear story and gameplay will be based upon the very same mechanics that make Cyberpunk 2020, with over 5m players worldwide, so popular.

Cyberpunk will also be a class-based title with a ‘gigantic’ arsenal of weapons, toys, implants and gadgets. It’s being developed by a second development team, unveiled for the first time at the conference, comprising of veterans from the Witcher development team. This also suggests that the other unannounced RPG, presumed to be The Witcher 3, is being developed independently of Cyberpunk.

One of the most interesting points of the conference was that Marcin Iwiński repeatedly stressed that Cyberpunk is “not a game for everyone”.

“CD Projekt Red is the team we’ve been hoping for. Their incredible work on The Witcher and The Witcher 2 shows that they share the same dedication and love of great games that we do at Talsorian,”  said Mike Poundsmith, creator of Cyberpunk 2020.

“I’m especially stoked that they want our participation in making this game a fantastic project that will live up to everything Cyberpunk fans (old and new) have been waiting for. Trust me – this game is going to rock.”

No release date or platforms have yet been announced.
