It’s all in a name, and thankfully for Chris Roberts, his name still means plenty. That was at least solidified by the news of a Kickstarter that his new company, Cloud Imperium, held for their upcoming Star Citizen. Started on October 18th with a goal of $500,000 USD, collections exceeded that amount easily within only six days. The Kickstarter is still garnering cash however, with 25 days to remain. This has been added to Roberts’ own crowd funding efforts, making projected $2 million USD goal all the more realistic.
Roberts take on the success: “The amount of support from our fans has been overwhelming. We had a few hiccups on our own site in the first week of operation, which led us to open up the Kickstarter page. Kickstarter provided better scalability for us and additional options for our fans. In the end, this is all about breathing new life into the PC games business. PC gamers have been left on the sidelines for the last few years. I want to utilize all the new technology that a PC can provide and bring space sims back into the modern area with a bang.
Of course, he also took the chance to reflect on where he’s been and where he’s going with his return, “Getting back into gaming is something I’ve been thinking about for several years. With all the new tech, it’s a whole different universe for developers and I’m ready to take the welcomed plunge again. All I can say is that I’m having a blast doing this. With all these backers and pledges and the team we’ve assembled, we can and will raise the bar to a different stratosphere for PC gamers and space sims.”
Renowned for the Wing Commander series, and then serving with Microsoft Games Studio for some truly forgettable titles, Star Citizen will be the first big PC space simulation we’ve seen in a long, long time.
