In a rather interesting acquisition, THQ Nordic has announced that it’s acquired 100 percent share capital in Koch Media. The former is renowned for owning studios like Deep Silver (Saints Row) and 4A Games (Metro Exodus). The total amount considered for the acquisition is 121 million Euro on a cash and debt free basis, which works out to an equity value of 91.5 million Euro.
Even more interesting is how THQ Nordic CEO Lars Wingefors confirmed that “next AAA release” from Saints Row studio Volition. Dambuster Studio of Homefront: The Revolution fame also has a new “AAA release” in the works.
“Koch Media has a long history of profitability despite losses incurred from some less successful game releases. THQ Nordic is convinced that the development studios of Deep Silver as part of THQ Nordic will successfully deliver at least four ongoing AAA game projects including Metro Exodus as well as the next Volition Studio AAA release and the next Dambuster Studio AAA release, together with a number of other game development and publishing titles,” said Wingefors.
Koch Media CEO Klemens Kundratitz offered his thoughts as well, noting that, “I strongly believe that THQ Nordic is a great strategic fit with Koch Media. In addition to having long experience within games development and publishing, THQ Nordic has the skills, willingness and capital to deliver growth in the future.”
Despite the acquisition, both companies will still operate independently. There is the possibility of different IPs, assets and resources being used between both studios though. In total, THQ Nordic has 24 games that are still unannounced while Koch Media has nine more games to announce. It won’t be stopping there as THQ Nordic will be working to acquire more IPs and game studios in the coming days.
THQ Nordic is currently the publisher for Darksiders 3 and distributor for Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire. What are your thoughts on it cquiring Koch Media? Let us know in the comments below.
