Monster Hunter World may have captivated the masses since launching in January but Phoenix Labs’ Dauntless is still surging ahead. The developer announced that the hunting-style action RPG will be going into open beta on May 24th. Though there have been 100,000 players for the closed beta till now, an additional 700,000 players have signed up for the upcoming open beta.
Phoenix Labs co-founder and CEO Jesse Houston said that, “Dauntless is more than four years in the making, and we can’t wait for everyone to join us in the Shattered Isles, team up with friends, take on Behemoths, craft epic gear and bring the world to life. As we close in on our next phase of this adventure, we thank our passionate community that has been with us from day-one, providing feedback and helping craft the experience into what it is today.”
As Houston explained, the entire purpose of Dauntless is to take on enormous beasts called Behemoths, kill them and then craft various weapons and armour from their remains. These will then be used to fight tougher monsters. Unlike Monster Hunter World, Dauntless simply points you in the direction of a Behemoth and asks you to slay it. The overall combat is also easier to pick up.
