Titanfall was a massive launch earlier this year- it as the first game from Respawn Entertainment, which was the new studio formed by ex Infinity Ward talent, and it was also a new kind of shooter exclusive to Xbox consoles (and PC) that promised a new era for console shooters, and upon which Microsoft seemed to have hedged a lot of its bets (similar to Halo on the original Xbox or Gears of War on Xbox 360).
But then it released, and we never got any concrete numbers on how it performed- NPD and the UK Charts tell us that the game sold well enough to top charts there for successive tracking periods… but they never tell us exactly how much the game sold, which led many to speculate that the game had underperformed.
Well, now EA and Respawn are here to put an end to that speculation, though they still won’t give us concrete numbers. In an interview with Eurogamer, when speaking about the game’s performance, EA’s Andrew Wilson had this to say:
“Yeah! Our expectations were high and it beat them.”
“I think it went really well. The demand, the anticipation was huge. People came out in droves to play that game. The timing of the game was really good. You’d played through the early launch set of titles. So it came at exactly the right time for me as a gamer. It was super fun. It was super innovative in terms of how you’d played it. The team at Respawn did a fantastic on the product and continue to layer in new maps and new content that is extending and enhancing the experience.
“So, I think it’s going to be another great IP in our industry in the future,” teased Wilson about a possible Titanfall 2.
Of course, it is now pretty much an open (speculated) secret that the IP will not remain exclusive to the Xbox line of consoles (contrary, to be sure, to whatever Microsoft had hoped for), but will also be coming to PS4 as well. We’ll know for sure soon either way, so stay tuned.
