Ethical hacker helps fix security exploit in Rift

An ethical hacker known as ‘ManWitDaPlan’ recently used his powers for good and uncovered a security exploit in the recently released MMORPG Rift.

Having identified the culprit accounts that were compromising security within the game, ManWitDaPlan was promptly contacted by the developers, Trion, who were able to patch this exploit quickly.

Trion have said that “(we’re) very happy to confirm that we did fix a login vulnerability, with significant assistance from an extremely clever user.”

“The root cause was a very subtle bug in error checking of our login validations deep in the server code. No personal information or any such was leaked out, and no outside attacker penetrated our servers, networks, or databases. All totalled up, under 1% of accounts with characters have had characters impacted. However, 1% of a surprisingly large number is still very noticeable.”

“We’d definitely like to thank Mr. ManWitDaPlan for the well-timed assist,” the studio added. “Sir, we salute you and offer our most heartfelt thanks.”

It’s good to know that developers like Trion are serious about keeping their games running smoothly post-release. They’re a credit to the force.
