Evolve Going Free to Play for PC on July 7th

Starting out as beta and promising complete overhaul of maps, mechanics and so on.

Turtle Rock Studios’ Evolve is being reborn as a free to play title for PC on July 7th. Which is today and should pretty much be an indicator as to what that mysterious timer was counting down to.

Starting off as a beta, players can purchase Founder packs that provide special access and other rewards. A “vigorous overhaul” of the shooter was promised and the developer is looking to rebalance the Hunter classes, improve the maps and UI and providing more customization. Stability and bug fixes along with improved loading times will also be worked on.

If that wasn’t enough, Turtle Rock also talked about the general problems the original launch faced. “When Evolve launched, the reception wasn’t what we expected. Sure, there were some good reviews. There were also bad reviews.

“Yes, there was excitement. There was also disappointment – for players and for us. The DLC s**tstorm hit full force and washed away people’s enthusiasm, dragging us further and further from that first magical pick-up-and-play experience. We want that magic back and we aim to make it happen.”

The free to play structure has been suggested by players for a while now but Turtle Rock is working to cater to them and will implement a new server infrastructure when the beta goes live. What are your thoughts on Evolve’s triumphant return? Let us know in the comments.
