NPD released their report for the month of March today, and it was great news all around for everyone. Ubisoft’s Far Cry 5 was the chart topper, also instantly ending up as the highest selling game of the year so far (displacing Monster Hunter World, which is now #2). Microsoft and Rare’s controversial and divisive Sea of Thieves came in at second place, in spite of also being on Game Pass- proving, once and for all, that the title has resonated with gamers in spite of the negativity surrounding it.
But Sony and Nintendo had reason to celebrate, too- Sony’s MLB The Show 18 was the third highest selling game of the month, and saw its highest series debut so far. Kirby: Star Allies came in at #4, with a similar series high debut. Nintendo, in fact, dominates a fourth of the top 20 chart. Five Nintendo games (Kirby: Star Allies, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Splatoon 2) are currently legging it out in the Top 20 (without software sales even being considered).
April marks the launch of God of War, as well as Nintendo’s Labo, so it should be an interesting month for sales again. But for now, we can be happy that all companies and gamers saw something to celebrate in March.
