While console manufacturers like Microsoft have been quite open to the idea of cross-platform play, Sony has been adamant about not letting it happen with the PS4. The former President of Sony Online Entertainment John Smedley explained the reasons behind Sony’s decisions, and it seems like cross-platform play may still be a possibility if there is enough pressure put on the company to make way for this feature.
Smedley took to Twitter and stated, “When I was at Sony, the stated reason internally for this was money.” Given that Sony’s strategy for their console involves a high degree of exclusivity, this stance makes sense. “They didn’t like someone buying something on an Xbox and it being used on a PlayStation. Simple as that. Dumb reason, but there it is,” he stated. However, Smedley stated that change might be possible if there is enough pressure on the company to allow for cross-platform play. In an age where players own multiple consoles, it makes sense that they would want this feature enabled for the PS4 as well. However, it remains to be seen if any changes will be made or if Sony remains firm in their refusal to allow cross-platform play.
