Epic Games is used to secrecy but it pretty much kept Fortnite in the dark for years after its initial reveal. Intended as a mix of crafting meets tower defense meets class-based co-op combat meets survival horror, Fortnite is now one of the quirkier titles to bear the studio’s mark.
But how did it start? Speaking to Game Reactor at Gamescom, producer Roger Collum said that, “When we first started Fortnite almost three years ago now from that little tiny game jam the game really grew into something that we didn’t expect.
“When we first did it we wanted the game to be something we could make in three months and just push it out there. We were trying to explore how could we do games at a much faster pace. And then as we started to explore the mechanics of Fortnite we realised we’ve got something really special and that it needed a whole lot more.”
Fortnite is currently slated to release in 2015 and will be heading to PC. It is being developed using Unreal Engine 4.
