Gabe Newell Assures No Change in Priorities Among Valve Lay-Offs

However, no confirmation or word regarding rumours of the lay-offs.

Strange happenings today at Valve, as hardware engineer Jeri Ellsworth was reportedly fired. However, Valve director of business Jason Holtman had also left the company, and other rumoured lay-offs included several team members such Moby Francke, senior developer Tom Leonard, animator Matthew Russell and many more.

This comes from a glance at Valve’s employee page, where said names are missing. Gamasutra also independently confirmed several lay-offs from its own sources.

Valve boss Gabe Newell recently spoke to Engadget about the news, and reassured the public that while lay-offs have indeed been happening, there will be no shift in priorities. However, that’s as far as we was willing to comment on the matter.

“We don’t usually talk about personnel matters for a number of reasons. There seems to be an unusual amount of speculation about some recent changes here, so I thought I’d take the unusual step of addressing them.

“No, we aren’t canceling any projects. No, we aren’t changing any priorities or projects we’ve been discussing. No, this isn’t about Steam or Linux or hardware or [insert game name here]. We’re not going to discuss why anyone in particular is or isn’t working here.”

Curiouser and curiouser, that’s for sure. Stick with us as the Valve story unfolds.
