Ghost of Yōtei is Set 300 Years After Ghost of Tsushima

Sucker Punch moved away from Jin Sakai to "explore what it could mean to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mask" and their legend.

Sucker Punch Productions has finally revealed its sequel to Ghost of TsushimaGhost of Yōtei, launching in 2025. While it offers a new setting and protagonist, what motivated the development team to move away from Jin Sakai?

On the PlayStation Blog, Sucker Punch said it loves origin stories and wanted “to explore what it could mean to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mask, and uncovering a new legend. This led us to Ghost of Yōtei: a new protagonist, a new story to unfold, and a new region of Japan to explore.”

The new hero’s name is Atsu, and the story unfolds over 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima. Set in 1603, it’s set in Ezo, which would become Hokkaido and where Mount Yōtei serves as the center of various tundras, forests, grasslands, and more. Since it’s outside of Japan’s rule, there may be more lawlessness than expected, especially with Sucker Punch indicating it to be a “far cry from the organized samurai clans who lived in Tsushima.”

There will be “much more” in the coming months as we learn more about Atsu and the characters she’ll encounter. Stay tuned for more updates and in the meantime, check out our review for the PC version of Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut.
